San Francisco Declaration On Research Assessment (Dora), The American Society For Cell Biology

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

There is a pressing need to improve the ways in which the output of scientific research is evaluated by funding agencies, academic institutions, and other parties. To address this issue, a group of editors and publishers of scholarly journals met during the Annual Meeting of The American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB) in San Francisco, CA, on December 16, 2012. The group developed a set of recommendations, referred to as the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment. We invite interested parties across all scientific disciplines to indicate their support by adding their names to this Declaration. The outputs from scientific research …

Data Curation Is For Everyone! The Case For Master's And Baccalaureate Institutional Engagement With Data Curation, Yasmeen Shorish

Libraries

This article describes the fundamental challenges to data curation, how these challenges may be compounded for smaller institutions, and how data management is an essential and manageable component of data curation. Data curation is often discussed within the confines of large research universities. As a result, master's and baccalaureate institutions may be left with the impression that they cannot engage with data curation. However, by proactively engaging with faculty, libraries of all sizes can build closer relationships and help educate faculty on data documentation and organizational best practices. This article describes experiences from one master's comprehensive institution as it engages …

Teaching Information Literacy, Heather Jagman, Michele Shade

Heather Jagman

In this age of information abundance, do you wonder if your students have the skills to recognize the kind of information they need to complete assignments, and then to locate, evaluate and use that information effectively? In this workshop, participants will develop an understanding of how to integrate information literacy skills into assignments and teaching in support of DePaul’s new university learning goals and strategic plan. The team of presenters will highlight national information literacy standards, provide an overview the DePaul University Library’s information literacy instruction program, and illustrate ways in which faculty and the library have collaborated to target …

Does Tenure Matter? Factors Influencing Faculty Contributions To Institutional Repositories, Anne M. Casey Oct 2012

Does Tenure Matter? Factors Influencing Faculty Contributions To Institutional Repositories, Anne M. Casey

Anne Marie Casey

INTRODUCTION Institutional repositories (IRs) provide colleges and universities a way to ensure stability of access to and dissemination of digital scholarly communications. Yet, many institutions report that faculty willingness to contribute to IRs is often limited. This study investigates faculty attitudes about IR contributions by tenure status and category of material. METHODS Two focus group interviews were conducted in the spring of 2009 among English department faculty at a large Midwestern university. One group consisted of tenured faculty and the other of tenure-track and adjunct faculty. RESULTS Both groups recognize the benefit of open access to research materials but expressed …

Measuring Author Research Relatedness: A Comparison Of Word-Based,Topic-Based And Author Cocitation Approaches, Kun Lu, Dietmar Wolfram Oct 2012

Measuring Author Research Relatedness: A Comparison Of Word-Based,Topic-Based And Author Cocitation Approaches, Kun Lu, Dietmar Wolfram

School of Information Studies Faculty Articles

Relationships between authors based on characteristics of published literature have been studied for decades. Author cocitation analysis using mapping techniques has been most frequently used to study how closely two authors are thought to be in intellectual space based on how members of the research community co-cite their works. Other approaches exist to study author relatedness based more directly on the text of their published works. In this study we present static and dynamic word-based approaches using vector space modeling, as well as a topic-based approach based on Latent Dirichlet Allocation for mapping author research relatedness. Vector space modeling is …

Purr: A Research Data Curation Service Model Using Hubzero, Courtney E. Matthews, Michael Witt

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

The Purdue University Research Repository (PURR, http://research.hub.purdue.edu) uses HUBzero to provide a research collaboration and data management solution for campus researchers. The National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and other funding agencies have begun requiring that researchers describe in their grant proposals how they will manage and share the data that will be produced in their research. Purdue researchers can include PURR in their data management plans, invite collaborators to work with them in a private projects on PURR, and publish datasets that can be cited using Digital Object Identifiers (DOI). This presentation will explore Purdue’s data …

Proximity And Matthew Effect In Co-Authorship Pattern Of Iranian Top Universities, Mahmood Khosrowjerdi, Neda Zeraatkar, Marzieh Hajipoor

Mahmood Khosrowjerdi

Co-authorship is used to measure scholarly collaborations of countries, institutions, and individuals. It refers to the process in which two or more authors or researchers collaborate with each other to create a joint-work through collaboration methods and channels. Although many studies have been conducted to analyze the individual or field co-authorships in Iran, a little have concerned the organisational co-authorships in this country. This study aims to analyze organisational coauthorships among Iranian top universities based on proximity rule and Matthew effect. Data were limited to published articles affiliated to top universities in Iran and extracted from the Web of Science …

So You Think You Can Manage An Institutional Repository, Silke Higgins, Crystal Goldman Apr 2012

So You Think You Can Manage An Institutional Repository, Silke Higgins, Crystal Goldman

Faculty and Staff Publications

Traditionally, academic libraries have held the responsibility of housing, disseminating, and preserving the scholarly output of their universities. These materials, including but not limited to student dissertations and theses, as well as faculty publications were--and still are-- primarily held in the libraries’ archives and special collections departments. With the unstoppable march of bits and bites, academic libraries experience an increasingly strong push towards preserving digital records of scholarly output in electronic Institutional Repositories (IR). While undeniably an exciting and versatile invention, the establishment and management of an IR can at the same time be an intimidating endeavor.Over the course of …
