How Granular Do You Want To Go? Analyizing Marcxml Data With Python, Rebecca Hyams
How Granular Do You Want To Go? Analyizing Marcxml Data With Python, Rebecca Hyams
Publications and Research
While Alma Analytics can be quite powerful, it has its limits when it comes to providing answers to complex questions about bibliographic and holdings records. For those of us that do work that includes maintaining and enhancing records, having good quality data is vital in making informed decisions on the best way forward. You may find you want to know things like which additional identifiers are present in the record to help with deduplication efforts, or how many records have a particular formatting issue that needs addressing. The data is already there in the record and can be accessed via …

Composers' Collected Works: A Case Study In Remote Work Compatible Catalog Maintenance, David Floyd
Composers' Collected Works: A Case Study In Remote Work Compatible Catalog Maintenance, David Floyd
Library Scholarship
Approximately 15% of Binghamton University Libraries' 28,000 musical scores are collections of scores comprising a composer's complete works. Ideally, these large, multipart, non-circulating collections are cataloged consistently with either comprehensive records for each set, or individual records for each score within the set. Our catalog is inconsistent in this approach and requires remediation. The resulting workflow maximizes flexibility in who participates, where, and when, by siloing the portion of the work requiring data processing and advanced music cataloging skills. This poster will show both the workflow for standardizing composers' collected works sets, and how the project is designed for remote …

Library Presentations
Alma normalization rules are a powerful tool for editing and enhancing bibliographic and holding records, in batch or individually. This presentation will describe how to read and write normalization rules for beginner and intermediate users. We will cover the syntax and logic of normalization rules, how and why to add a rule as a process, common use cases and real-world examples, and best practices and tricks we’ve learned along the way. Carpe Data With Alma Analytics, Mary Ellen Willemsen, Julene L. Jones
Library Presentations
Capturing your data is vital to the smooth functioning of any library. We will be providing some tips and tricks to help you gather and analyze your data using Alma Analytics. After the presentation you will know how to gather data within a date period (i.e., all items that circulated in the last 30 days or between a date period), filter your data, count data, subtract one set of numbers from another, and import your results into a set in Alma to further analyze or manipulate your data. We will also include any formulas that we have found to be …

With Careful Consideration And Managed Expectations: Migration From Ex Libris' Voyager To Ex Libris' Alma/Primo, Julene L. Jones
Library Presentations
The University of Kentucky migrated from their long-standing ILS, Ex Libris Voyager with SFX, to Ex Libris Alma (and Primo) in six short months! As the person who runs reports and performs authority control and batch changes to UK’s MARC metadata for print resources, Julene was responsible for migrating that metadata so that it displayed well in Alma / Primo with minimal data loss, for training all library faculty and staff on the use of Resource Management and Analytics, and for coordinating the multitude of migration events with the Systems, Acquisitions, Circulation, Electronic Resources, and ILL librarians. She will describe …

Alma/Primo Management In A Post-Migration World, Kate Seago, Julene L. Jones
Library Presentations
While on Voyager, the University of Kentucky had a committee dedicated to handling releases and policies for the system. During our migration to Alma and Primo we moved to taskforces to manage the migration, putting that committee on hold. Post-migration, we revived the ILS Committee and updated the charge to handle Alma/Primo releases and policies. This presentation will briefly discuss the procedures we’re using to manage Alma and Primo releases, training, set policies, and communicate with library staff post-migration. We’d like to leave time for audience participation to find out how others are managing these processes at their institutions.

Alma as a web site lets us view, search, and edit our data in a variety of ways, but what if you want to do something slightly different? Fortunately, Ex Libris provides API access that allows you to add specialized functionality to your Alma workflows, or even access Alma's data through other web sites. In this presentation I will go over the basics of APIs, demonstrate how you can learn about and test them using the Ex Libris Developer Network, and show some examples of how they can be used to extend Alma's functionality.

VCU Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations
The functionality of the Alma Community Zone electronic collections in combination with the Primo Central Index and the development of the OCLC WorldShare Collection Manager and WorldCat Discovery Services have been game changers for the VCU Libraries. We are using the Alma/Primo and WorldShare systems in tandem to manage holdings, availability and discovery of an increasing proportion of our electronic resources automatically.
