One of the biggest challenges in library instruction today is engaging students in the one-shot library instruction setting. Students are bored, incommunicative and motivating them to participate proves difficult. These challenges with students beg the question: how do we initiate and maintain student engagement in the one-shot library instruction?

Our approach is a simple one: let the students set the learning agenda.

Sharepoint Portal - Lehman Connect Master’S Thesis Repository Library – It Strategic Partnership, Madeline Cohen, David Stevens, Rasun Williams

Publications and Research

Lehman College’s Leonard Lief Library and Information Technology Division launched the Lehman Master’s Thesis Repository on its new Sharepoint portal in September 2011. The project team consisted of two librarians and three IT engineers. The presentation will outline the project’s development including rationale, the decision to host the repository on the Sharepoint portal, access issues, migration of data, custom programming, best practices and conclusions on the benefits of Library-IT collaboration.

Comparison of the University of Rhode Island Libraries with peer institutions (as defined by the University's Office of Institutional Research). Data used are from the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Statistical Survey from the years 2006-2010. Metrics compared are: total library expenditures, total library materials expenditures, current serials expenditures, monographs expenditures, current serial subscriptions, number of monographic volumes purchased, salaries & wages professional staff, salaries & wages support staff, professional staff (fte), support staff (fte), and total library materials resource expenditures per student FTE.

"Libraries for Sustainability" was a networking event held at the AASHE conference on 10/11/2011. Participants mostly included sustainability officers with a handful of librarians. A lively and productive discussion yielded ten ideas for connecting campus libraries as partners in the sustainability movement.

The forging of partnerships between the Library and the Office of Sustainability holds great potential for strengthening the surge of sustainability in higher education. In the wake of the public library movement in the southern United States during the early twentieth century, local librarians began providing library services for those whom they deemed to be their most valuable resources, children. Representatives of a new profession, children’s librarians campaigned for better tomorrows by collecting good books specifically for young readers while providing safe, comfortable spaces that encouraged an atmosphere of instructive entertainment.

At the City College of New York (CCNY), the Art and Architecture Visual Resources Librarian (VR Librarian) teamed up with the Information Literacy Librarian to design an online tutorial for conducting library research in Art History. In 1999, ABC’s Nightline asked IDEO, a well-known innovation and design consultancy, to redesign the shopping cart in five days. While the challenge of re-imagining a cultural icon “inexplicably stuck in a sort of an innovation limbo”1 drew enough interest, even more compelling was the process the IDEO team used to research, brainstorm, and design the new model. The IDEO team threw out middle-management hierarchies based on experience or seniority—the project leader, who had only worked with IDEO for six years, was chosen for his skill in leading groups. Information Literacy Follow-Through: Enhancing Pre-Service Teachers' Information Evaluation Skills Through Formative Assessment, Sara Seely, Sara Fry, Margie Ruppel

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

An investigation into pre-service teachers' information evaluation skills at a large university suggests that formative assessment can improve student performance. Pre-service teachers were asked to apply information evaluation skills in the areas of currency, relevancy, authority, accuracy and purpose. The authors compared the pre-service teachers’ and researchers’ evaluations and used Perreault and Leigh’s Index of Reliability to analyze final projects from two semesters. When asked to evaluate the sources cited in a final project for an Education methods course, pre-service teachers who received formative feedback from librarians improved in most information evaluation areas. Building Digital Collections Through Partnerships: Byu's Harold B. Lee Library And Internet Archive, Elizabeth Smart

Since June 2009, BYU’s Harold B. Lee Library (HBLL) has worked in partnership with the Internet Archive (IA) to scan library holdings for public access in the Internet Archive’s digital library (www.archive.org). While many libraries send microfilm, monographs and serials to IA Scanning Centers for digital imaging on Scribe scanning stations, HBLL is one of very few academic libraries working with the Internet Archive in a “no-cash model” partnership. This partnership is based on an exchange of goods and services.

The Internet Archive provides: Scribe scanning stations (one in June 2009; two additional in January 2011), relevant software, post-scan processing. …
