Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

A failure to adapt to and adopt new and changing technology caused the music industry to crash, a fate that the information industry currently faces. This proposal is an overview of the music industry's crash, as a result of changing technology, and the lessons that the information industry can learn from the music industry's mistakes in order to avoid its own crash now that technology allows for quicker, easier, and cheaper publication. In the 80s & 90s record companies refused to effectively adapt to and adopt the new technologies of CDs, MP3s, and digital recording. This resulted in a slow …

Tracking Electronic Resource Acquisitions: Using A Helpdesk System To Succeed Where Your Erms Failed, Xan Arch, Jason S. Price

Library Staff Publications and Research

From selection to license negotiation through activation, libraries need the ability to track the electronic resource acquisition process and support uninterrupted workflow through multiple people and/or departments. Existing systems store fragments of information about a resource, but they don’t support management of the progress of each resource through the electronic resource acquisition maze. Stanford and Claremont have configured the JIRA and Footprints ticketing systems to address this fundamental need. Our systems facilitate efficient and complete activation of e-resources, and allow greater transparency in the acquisitions process throughout the organization. We will demonstrate the key features & functionality of our independently …

Ready, Set, Get Published: Tips For Scholarly Writing Success, Annette M. Healy, Judith M. Arnold, Deborah H. Charbonneau

Library Scholarly Publications

Publishing scholarly articles and books has many benefits. For librarians, it can help establish a professional identity and contribute to professional growth. For the library community, it is an effective means for sharing ideas and experiences that contribute to improving library services and managing the challenges we encounter in our work environment.

This program features three presenters who will share their experiences participating in the scholarly publishing process. The first presenter will discuss how to locate publishing opportunities, develop an idea into an article, and select a journal. The second presenter will address the peer-review process and provide an insider’s …

Walking The Walk: A Path To Support Open Access Publishing [Poster], Linda L. Phillips, Donna Braquet

Other Library Publications and Works

Scholarly communication is the lifeblood of universities. Threats to the free flow of research and ideas continue to jeopardize the entire academy; however administrators, scholars, and librarians are now pursuing options to reclaim research produced in the academy's domain. One way to do this is with Open Access. Open Access has been a topic of interest and intense depabe for academic librarians. Ways to create awareness about and encourage publication in Open Access journals have been discussed at library conferences for the better part of the decade. But what is the next step? What happens when the library's promotion pays …

First-Year Student Initiatives At An Urban Research University, Judith M. Arnold, Carrie F. Croatt-Moore

Library Scholarly Publications

At a time when universities and colleges are placing emphasis on the first-year experience, there has been an effort on the part of the libraries to address this audience with a customized approach. Involvement with academic orientation programs is one method of reaching these first year students, and as one step the Wayne State University Library System has established a presence in the university’s iStart program (http://www.istart.wayne.edu/). In the large environment of a research university with over 30,000 students, technology has also been employed as an efficient way to establish a connection between first year students and the library. As …

University Of Tennessee Libraries Website Focus Groups 2009, Debbie Valine

Other Library Publications and Works

In June 2009 the UT Libraries conducted focus groups with graduate students, undergraduate students, and faculty. The purpose of the focus groups was to help guide implementation of the Primo search and delivery platform and associated redesign of the Libraries' website. The objectives of the focus groups were to gather information to help the design team determine: what information should be most prominent on the website homepage, what other design elements should be incorporated into the homepage design, and what resources do users want to search from the main search box and how should those resources be labeled?

The End Of Institutional Repositories And The Beginning Of Social Academic Research Service: An Enhanced Role For Libraries, Stuart M. Basefsky Jun 2009

The End Of Institutional Repositories And The Beginning Of Social Academic Research Service: An Enhanced Role For Libraries, Stuart M. Basefsky

Stuart Basefsky

As more and more universities establish Institutional Repositories (IR), awareness is developing about the limitations of IRs in enhancing the academic research service. The concept of an IR needs to be expanded to include the integration of the processes that transform intellectual endeavor into a broadening array of academic and research support services which are fundamentally social. These include, but are not limited to – (1) sharing institutionally developed intellectual product (traditional IR) (2) informing others of the availability of this product with defined purpose (3) collecting additional academically relevant materials in digital formats using IRs (4) disseminating timely information …

Beyond Buzz Words And Skill Sets: The Role Of Critical Thinking In Information Literacy, Anne E. Shelley May 2009

Beyond Buzz Words And Skill Sets: The Role Of Critical Thinking In Information Literacy, Anne E. Shelley

Anne Shelley

The concept of information literacy should go far beyond users’ acquisition of banked skills. The competence to execute a keyword search in a specific database, navigate a library catalog, or memorize a certain call number does not indicate users are able to think on their own feet. Users who are truly information literate have the capacities to solve problems, think independently and are able to structure their own research processes once they leave the classroom. Effective, engaging instruction is the vehicle through which users can achieve these sought-after attributes; when they are interacting with information and confronted with options, such …

Using A Survey Tool To Establish Preservation Priorities: Results From The Historical Folio Collection Survey At The Cushing/Whitney Medical Library, Yale University, Robin Featherstone, Sarah Burge

Western Libraries Presentations

Objective: An item-level survey was undertaken to reveal the preservation needs of a unique collection of rare medical historical folios and oversize anatomical atlases at the Harvey Cushing/John Hay Whitney Medical Library, Yale University.

Methodology: During a re-shelving project, surveyors noted detailed preservation information in a FileMakerPro database. Recorded information included: dimensions, whether a new enclosure was needed, external status (condition of boards, spine, cover), internal status (cover-to-text attachment, paper), attributes (covering material, binding type, inclusions, bookplate owner, decoration), value/damage (value, damage summary, treatment summary), and photos.

Results and Conclusions: Survey data revealed vital information for determining preservation priorities. The …

Engaging That Other Audience: Encouraging Faculty Involvement In Information Literacy Using New Technology, Jennifer Kelley Apr 2009

Engaging That Other Audience: Encouraging Faculty Involvement In Information Literacy Using New Technology, Jennifer Kelley

Jennifer Kelley

Literature on the subject shows that information literacy programs truly thrive when they receive support and involvement from teaching faculty. While efforts to integrate information literacy instruction into the curriculum and collaborating with faculty are not new, many of the opportunities and tools for doing so are. Whether you have full-support from all faculty (lucky you!) or varying levels of involvement from isolated departments or instructors here and there, we all have access to the tools we need to spark interest, take conversations to the next level, engage individuals, and create collaborative environments for designing information literacy sessions and programs.
