Color Me Calm: Adult Coloring And The University Library, Heidi Blackburn, Claire E. Chamley

Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

An activity often reserved for children, coloring books for adults rose from hipster trend to global phenomenon beginning in 2013. Adults flocked to the activity for a variety of reasons, including stress relief, socialization, a way to unplug from technology or even as a way to gain social status by appearing trendy. Participants reported enjoying the tactile, interactive nature of the books as a respite from constant screen time. Coloring books became big business for craft suppliers and bookstores by 2015. Ala Midwinter 2015 Lita Preconference Review: How User Testing Can Improve The User Experience Of Your Library Website, Tammi M. Owens

Criss Library Faculty Publications

Last July, Winona State University’s Darrell W. Krueger Library rolled out a completely new website. This January we added to that new user experience by upgrading to LibGuides and LibAnswers v2. Now, we’re looking for continuous improvement through continuous user experience (UX) testing. Although I have some knowledge of the history and general tenets of user experience and website design, I signed up for this LITA pre-conference to dive into some case studies and ask specific questions of UX specialists. I hoped to come away with a concrete plan or framework for UX testing at our library. Specifically, I wanted …

Tech Speak And Librarian-Ese: Justifiable Jargon, Or Junk?, Tammi M. Owens Jan 2014

Tech Speak And Librarian-Ese: Justifiable Jargon, Or Junk?, Tammi M. Owens

Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Many libraries are redesigning their websites for great user experiences through clean design. But what if you’ve redesigned your website, but still have patrons who are frustrated? It’s time to focus on language. Librarian-ese and tech speak are confusing and defeat our patrons before they begin. In this session I’ll show how you can use plain language, one of the main tenets of usability, to boost patron confidence. I’ll share real-life examples of websites and chat transcripts showing how little changes in language can make a big difference.

Shhh! No Talking About Retention In The Library!, Heidi Blackburn

Criss Library Faculty Publications

Student retention rates have long been a topic among school administrators, but it is an issue barely mentioned in library circles. This article will discuss the role the academic library can play in increasing and maintaining student retention rates on campus. By focusing briefly on four main topics, including reaching out to students early and often, getting them in the library door and getting them to stay, the reader will be able to see the broad picture of how crucial libraries are to fighting student attrition.
