Use Of The Worldcat Collection Analysis Tool To Assess The Statewide Serials Collection In Illinois, Chad E. Buckley
Use Of The Worldcat Collection Analysis Tool To Assess The Statewide Serials Collection In Illinois, Chad E. Buckley
Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library
In an era of consistently poor funding for materials budgets, libraries must work to identify the most cost-effective solutions for providing access to information needed by patrons. Consortia play an important role in these solutions for many libraries and can help leverage their buying power to provide widespread access to various publishers’ content at more affordable costs. The CARLI consortium in Illinois formed a Statewide Serials Collection Task Force in 2006 to “investigate various collaborative options related to print and electronic serials collections across the state.” As part of this group's work, the Worldcat Collection Analysis tool, commonly employed for …

Library Services Publications
This original research described a comparison of 50 composition topics taken from my library instruction sessions with Reference Universe versus simple keyword searching of the online catalog. Pete and I concluded that twenty-three percent of the "good" hits in Reference Universe were also found in OPAC search and that the OPAC search found fewer "good" hits overall; but also found different relevant resources.

Assess, Improve, And Share: Using Libqual+Tm To Provide A Quick And Easy Assessment For Accreditors, Administrators, And Users, Eric Forte
Library Faculty Publications and Presentations
Assessment in academic libraries is more important than ever as we strive to satisfy users, administrators and accreditation agencies, and present data to inform ongoing and future strategic directions. LibQUAL+TM yields a substantive set of quantitative and qualitative data that is relatively fast and easy to analyze, and is especially useful when significant skills and time to conduct meaningful assessment may not be present, such as in smaller academic libraries. Communicating the results and responses of assessment to stakeholders is a vital aspect of assessment and may in itself be indicative of the likelihood to enact positive change based on …

An Innovative Approach For Creating A Self-Guided Video Tour In An Academic Library, John H. Sandy, Mangala Krishnamurthy, Wayne Rau
An Innovative Approach For Creating A Self-Guided Video Tour In An Academic Library, John H. Sandy, Mangala Krishnamurthy, Wayne Rau
The Southeastern Librarian
Millions of students visit academic libraries each year, hoping to achieve success in the classroom and make progress with their research. Many of these students need help in navigating the complex services, collections, and facilities of a large academic library. Librarians often respond to this need by offering in-person orientation tours. However, with this approach, library personnel are unable to reach all who need assistance. Furthermore, the schedules of busy students and busy librarians do not always coincide, and students may prefer to learn about the library in a more flexible, self-paced fashion. It’s known that in-person tours are a …

Academic libraries are looking for ways to stay relevant to the Millennial/Internetgeneration. At the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Criss Library, we are conducting a pilot study on mobile computing to provide people to people (p2p) reference services. We will use smart phones and iPhones to interact with students who need information assistance. The study's objectives are the following: 1. Collect data to inform decisions about budgeting, reference services and staffing to re-tool for mobile computing; 2. Identify the audience for mobile computing; 3. Identify the skill sets needed by staff; 4. Create an action plan for redefining the …

Helin-Macc Unit Monthly Statistics 2007-2008
Technical Services Reports and Statistics
Monthly productivity statistics for Monographic Acquisitions and Copy Cataloging (MACC) Unit, University Library, University of Rhode Island. Data for fiscal year include bibliographic, item, and order records created, updated, and deleted by the MACC Unit in the HELIN integrated library system.
These statistics were first collected in 2001/02 to illustrate that, despite the fact that the number of books ordered was decreasing, staff were spending more of their time on database maintenance. After this situation was documented for seven years, it was felt that gathering these numbers was no longer necessary. Therefore, 2008/09 is the last year for which these …

The Right Book On The Right Shelf: Missing And Misshelved Books-- How Barcode Scanning Inventories Can Solve The Patrons' Dilemma, Judith M. Nixon
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
After over thirty years of failing to conduct a comprehensive inventory of the book collection at a large liberal arts library, our patrons complained that they could not find one in five books. Study of the problem indicated that in fact 20% of our books were either missing or miss-shelved. This article discusses the investigation of the problem and the impact after five years of conducting an annual inventory by using hand-held devices to gather barcodes and interface these with our catalog records to find the missing and miss-shelved books. The missing book rate dropped from 5.6% to less than …

It is more important than ever, suggested several companies in the annual Database Marketplace Survey, to measure collection use fully and better evaluate the value of the library to its constituencies. Strategies range from focusing on usage statistics to guide collection development to measuring (and improving) users' perceptions of the library.
