Drifting Towards Users’ Doorsteps: Domesticating Academic Library Services, Grace Arerosuoghene Arerosuoghene Dada Mrs

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Library is the heartbeat of research and development in the educational sector. However, since the digital transformation, library patronage had swayed like a pendulum creating gaps in patronage. Expanding (to schools) and extending (to host communities) the tenets of academic librarianship to far reaching ends is imperative to improving library services and increasing patronage. This study attempts to extract from heads of household and librarians, their opinion on domesticating some library services through inclusion of new services for students within and outside the library/school environment, obviously to salvage patronage and contribute to learning performance of students. The survey design was …

Learning Styles Reconsidered, Peter Tagtmeyer Oct 2022

Learning Styles Reconsidered, Peter Tagtmeyer

Upstate New York Science Librarians Conference

Study of individual differences in learning processes has a long history across several lines of psychology inquiry. Learning style theory (LST) is arguably a broadly recognized approach to education, embraced by educators theoretically and practically. Accommodation of individual learning styles with differential instruction is supported and endorsed globally, and well-funded. Yet empirical evidence in the literature that examines augmented learning achieved via learning styles accommodation in pedagogical practices is not compelling. Learning style theories are regularly researched in psychological and educational literature, and questions about the validity of findings persist. Currently LST research gives cause for many to regard learning …

Peer Learning Experience To Grow Public Library Innovation: The Initiative For Young African Library Innovators, Ramune Petuchovaite, Ugne Lipeikaite Oct 2021

Peer Learning Experience To Grow Public Library Innovation: The Initiative For Young African Library Innovators, Ramune Petuchovaite, Ugne Lipeikaite

New Librarianship Symposia Series: Fall 2021

In 2014/15, we commissioned research into how and why public libraries innovate, and what encourages take-up of innovative practices by public libraries in developing countries. One of the main findings was that peer-to-peer activities are essential for public library innovation. Besides facilitating learning and ideas exchange, they create a platform for mutual support, when initiating a new service. Library visits, in which librarians can see innovative services 'in situ', and events like workshops and other training, and conferences, where they mingle and exchange practical experiences, and work together on projects, are effective channels for inspiring innovation (Femenía, A. M. G., …

Impact Of The Internet On Library Use: Case Study Of Technical Diploma Colleges In Goa., Vijaya V. Sawant Mrs., Pravin V. Kamat Mr.

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The Internet plays an essential part in bringing about digital revolution in Libraries. However, over the years there is disagreement as to whether it is beneficial to uplift the status of libraries using digital technologies or whether these technologies will eventually replace libraries. Internet is a useful tool, but it is not a substitute. Internet is not digital library. This research paper aims to investigate the influence of Internet on library usage and determine if Internet has lowered library gate counts or increased them. This research is also being carried out to see whether library professionals believe that development of …

Visualizing The Convergence Of Metaliteracy And The Information Literacy Framework, Trudi E. Jacobson, Thomas P. Mackey, Kelsey L. O'Brien

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

Displaying information in a visual manner frequently enhances clarity. Highlighting thematic elements and their interrelationships can lead to understanding, even insights, that might not otherwise happen. While words describe, well-conceived graphics illuminate in both subtle and overt ways. Synergies between word and image are especially powerful.

The visualization at the heart of this chapter makes connections between two separate but related frameworks: information literacy and metaliteracy. The ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education acknowledges that it was influenced by metaliteracy, and in particular metacognition.1 Metaliteracy emerged prior to the development of the ACRL Framework and was similarly designed …

Teaching Colon Classification Using Revised Bloom’S Taxonomy: Teachers’ Strategy, Saravanan T Jan 2021

Teaching Colon Classification Using Revised Bloom’S Taxonomy: Teachers’ Strategy, Saravanan T

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The strategy to teach the subject Colon Classification using Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy levels (Anderson,L.W., & Krathwohl, D.R., 2001) is unpacked here. Though Library and Information Science Teachers teach the Colon Classification using S.R.Ranganathan’s Steps in Classification (0-7 successive steps and 1 final step) in the class rooms to shape the classification skills of the students, the six levels of Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy make the teachers’ job easier and also help the students to learn them without much burdens. This paper unpacks the experience and teaching strategy of the teacher, who teaches the Colon Classification Scheme (6th edition) [Course Code:19LISC202; …

Changing The Habitat At Academic Conferences: Using A Learning Ecosystem With Active Learning During A Panel Presentation, Gail Morton, Lee Olson, Stephanie Miranda, Adam Griggs, Kristen Bailey, Christian Pham, Kathryn Wright

Georgia Library Quarterly

Abstract

In order to assess the effectiveness and feasibility of an active learning event during a panel presentation at an academic conference, Mercer University librarians presenting at the Georgia Libraries Conference switched the traditional way panel presentations are modeled. Instead of the question and answer session following a brief overview of the presentation, we moved our physical position in the room, closer to the participants in order to have a more intimate conversation with attendees. Using two active learning techniques, discussion and brainstorming, the presenters started a conversation with attendees about project ideas involving teaching faculty members, librarians, and students …

Reflective School Library Practitioners: Use Of Journaling To Strengthen Practice, Elizabeth A. Burns Jan 2020

Reflective School Library Practitioners: Use Of Journaling To Strengthen Practice, Elizabeth A. Burns

STEMPS Faculty Publications

Reflection is a skill educators of school librarians hope to foster in their students. Widely used in teacher preparation (Hodgins 2014), reflective journaling is a pedagogical strategy that aligns with the text-based nature of library and information studies coursework, especially as more library schools move online (Kymes and Ray 2012). This study explores use of structured dialogic journaling as a pedagogical approach to inform and shape the reflective practice of pre-service school librarians. Journals were introduced in an early school library methods course and structured using Schon’s Reflective Practitioner model (1987). Additional opportunities to engage with dialogic journals continued through …

Foregrounding Documentation Within Metaliteracy, Marc Kosciejew Dec 2019

Foregrounding Documentation Within Metaliteracy, Marc Kosciejew

Proceedings from the Document Academy

Documentation plays a central role in metaliteracy. When individuals engage in metaliterate practices of creating, sharing, and assessing information, they are, in fact, engaging in practices with documents. Yet, while the goals and objectives of metaliteracy implicitly acknowledge documentation, they do not explicitly emphasize the fundamental roles played by it in helping facilitate and enable various metaliterate practices. This article aims to make these roles explicit.

By foregrounding documentation – specifically documents and their associated practices – within metaliteracy, this article argues for the recognition of the fundamental roles played by documents and their associated practices within metaliterate practices and …
