From observations made by Robson (1993) who states that “the success of data collection should be assessed in relation to the specific research question”, it is felt necessary to study the aim as well as the fact that the most suitable unit of analysis will be sufficiently large to be considered as a whole but small enough to be referred as a relevant meaning unit during the analysis process (Graneheim & Lundman, 2004). Based on these criteria, the researcher tries to investigate that the study is carried out in the right direction which rest upon the credibility and essentiality of …

Taxonomies have developed over the years to reach the current status of corporate taxonomies. A number of issues that triggered the prominence of taxonomies include; information overload, information literacy, organizational terminology and “destructuring” of organizations. This research contributes to the ongoing advocacy for the use of corporate taxonomies for effective knowledge organization and information retrieval in the digital community due to the explosion of various kinds of information on the internet, changes in user information seeking behaviour and needs, and the inability of search engines to precisely recall relevant information.

Otrouha: A Corpus Of Arabic Etds And A Framework For Automatic Subject Classification, Eman Abdelrahman, Fatimah Alotaibi, Edward A. Fox, Osman Balci
The Journal of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Although the Arabic language is spoken by more than 300 million people and is one of the six official languages of the United Nations (UN), there has been less research done on Arabic text data (compared to English) in the realm of machine learning, especially in text classification. In the past decade, Arabic data such as news, tweets, etc. have begun to receive some attention. Although automatic text classification plays an important role in improving the browsability and accessibility of data, Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs) have not received their fair share of attention, in spite of the huge number …
The Ensemble Mesh-Term Query Expansion Models Using Multiple Lda Topic Models And Ann Classifiers In Health Information Retrieval, Sukjin You
Theses and Dissertations
Information retrieval in the health field has several challenges. Health information terminology is difficult for consumers (laypeople) to understand. Formulating a query with professional terms is not easy for consumers because health-related terms are more familiar to health professionals. If health terms related to a query are automatically added, it would help consumers to find relevant information. The proposed query expansion (QE) models show how to expand a query using MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) terms. The documents were represented by MeSH terms (i.e. Bag-of-MeSH), which were included in the full-text articles. And then the MeSH terms were used to generate …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Technical services operations comprise of ordering, claiming and receipt of materials, cataloging and classification of materials; and serials control. Beside these, other technical services operations contain circulation, documents, foreign language and special collections, and bibliographic instruction in technical services areas. This leads me to believe that the distinction between technical services and public or reader services in individual libraries is based on custom and tradition arising out of incidental circumstances, rather than on fundamental principle. In this article, I tried to provide some basic aspect regarding technical processing which help in maintaining the library bitterly. In this article, I include …

Community Interest As An Indicator For Ranking, Xiaozhong Liu
Community Interest As An Indicator For Ranking, Xiaozhong Liu
School of Information Studies - Dissertations
Ranking documents in response to users' information needs is a challenging task, due, in part, to the dynamic nature of users' interests with respect to a query. We hypothesize that the interests of a given user are similar to the interests of the broader community of which he or she is a part and propose an innovative method that uses social media to characterize the interests of the community and use this characterization to improve future rankings. By generating a community interest vector (CIV) and community interest language model (CILM) for a given query, we use community interest to alter …

A Comparative Study On Text Categorization, Aditya Chainulu Karamcheti
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Automated text categorization is a supervised learning task, defined as assigning category labels to new documents based on likelihood suggested by a training set of labeled documents. Two examples of methodology for text categorizations are Naive Bayes and K-Nearest Neighbor.
In this thesis, we implement two categorization engines based on Naive Bayes and K-Nearest Neighbor methodology. We then compare the effectiveness of these two engines by calculating standard precision and recall for a collection of documents. We will further report on time efficiency of these two engines.
