Student Information Use And Decision-Making In Innovation Competitions, Heather A. Howard, Dave Zwicky
Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations
At a large university in the Midwestern United States, librarians work closely with an undergraduate agricultural innovation competition. Librarians serve as entrepreneurial information guides, providing business information instruction and consulting with student groups to mentor them through the innovation process. The competition, with a winning prize of $20,000, focuses on developing new products from soybeans to foster environmental stewardship and reduce reliance on petroleum. Competitions are a form of experiential learning, allowing students to fully experience the product design process and practice making evidence-based decisions. In order to progress through this competition, the students’ inventions must be shown to have …

The Academic Library In Society’S Knowledge System: A Case Study Of Tshwane University Of Technology, Mahlaga Molepo
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Academic libraries traditionally support the learning, teaching and research activities of universities. However, academic libraries do not operate in vacuum because they are part of the broader society. The purpose of this article is to fill the research gap that exists by focusing on Tshwane University of Technology’s (TUT) libraries’ challenges as a case study, in light of developments in higher education in South Africa and elsewhere in the world.
The article employs a blended method approach that draws on a survey, a focus, interviews, group literature and empirical evidence to build a case study of TUT’s libraries located within …
The Potential Of Industry Standards In Undergraduate Education, Heather A. Howard, Margaret Phillips, Alyson Vaaler, David Hubbard
The Potential Of Industry Standards In Undergraduate Education, Heather A. Howard, Margaret Phillips, Alyson Vaaler, David Hubbard
Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations
Industry standards have a significant impact on business as a means to eliminate waste, reduce costs, market products (e.g., for quality, safety, interoperability) and lessen liability (Thompson, 2011). Consequently, an understanding and the ability to use standards, agreed upon practices among interested or vested parties, is a critical workplace competency for those engaged in business and industry. To have a workforce competent in the use of standards, higher education curricula must be developed to integrate standards education at appropriate points within the curriculum. Despite the importance of standards, they are not universally integrated into the college and university curricula. Given …

Effective collaboration between archives and technical services can increase the discoverability of special collection materials. Archivists at the University of Dayton Libraries began using Archive-It to capture websites relevant to their collecting policies in 2015. However, the collections were only made available to users from the University of Dayton page on the Archive-It website. Content was isolated in a separate platform and was not promoted to users. Working together, the team of archivists and technical services librarians incorporated the web archive collections into the Libraries’ EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) discovery layer. A local data dictionary was created based on OCLC’s …

Academic libraries have long had print journals to support the university’s discovery and research needs. However, academic libraries are challenged with needs for relevant content, cost control, and space availability, and some have downsized their print journal collections as a result. Many academic libraries are replacing or supplementing print journal subscriptions with online subscriptions and open access journals. Pittsburg State University’s (PSU) Axe Library faces the challenge of providing access to print and online journals in order to support the university’s needs and stay on budget. To that end, PSU began rightsizing its print journal collection in 2016. In 2017, …

Navigating The Sustainable Stream: Academic Libraries Keeping Pace With Streaming Content Demand, Joshua Keyes, Elsa Loftis
Library Faculty Publications and Presentations
With increasing student and faculty expectations of on-demand streaming video content, how are academic libraries keeping pace with costs and licensing models? As the common access models for video add additional subscriptions to the mix or feature Patron-Driven Acquisition (PDA) options that escalate costs as usage increases, collections librarians must perform a precarious balancing act to ensure vital information resources are available at sustainable cost levels. We will share the recent experiences of The Claremont Colleges Library and Portland State University Library, and how our models have adapted to meet growing demands on our budgets and staff time. This is …

Sparking Joy In The Unf Rare Books Collection, Susan Swiatosz

University of North Florida (UNF) Special Collections does not have clear guidelines for collecting ‘rare’ books and maintaining them in our climate-controlled storage. Overcrowding is also a problem in Special Collections’ storage space. Both issues have led to a reassessment project of the noncirculating ‘rare’ books collected over the past 35 to 40 years. In the summer of 2018 UNF’s Resource Description Librarian surveyed the books under the direction of the Head of Special Collections and University Archives. In late fall 2018 we formed a Rare Books Advisory Group, an ad hoc group that is part of the Collection Development …

The Design Cycle And A Mixed Methods Approach For Improving Usability: A Case Study, James C. Miller
The Design Cycle And A Mixed Methods Approach For Improving Usability: A Case Study, James C. Miller
WRL Scholarship
This case study explores the concept of the design cycle as a guiding principle for choosing usability methods. It discusses the stages of the design cycle alongside the strengths and weaknesses of usability methods commonly used in libraries. Hollins University applied the design cycle principles to the redesign of the library’s website, which involved various methods (e.g. analytics, card sorting, content audit, surveys, and usability testing). This article argues that using the design cycle encourages an effective practice of mixing different usability methods, which leads to a more informed approach to improving usability. It concludes with recommendations for application of …

Students Perception Of Open Textbooks: Students Tell Us What They Think About Open Textbooks In Their Courses, Karen Bjork, Kristi Jensen
Library Faculty Publications and Presentations
Textbooks have long been an integral learning platform in higher education. As the rising cost of textbooks continues to burden students, many libraries have begun to facilitate the creation and publishing of open textbooks. While many colleges and universities have surveyed students about their textbook purchasing habits and interest in open textbooks, fewer surveys have captured student feedback on their actual hands on experiences with their resources. Portland State University (PSU) Library and the University of Minnesota (UofM) Libraries have both collected date from students about their experiences with open textbooks selected and created specifically for their courses.

Recasting Finals Week Programs: Fostering Student Success With Collaboration And Goodwill, Maria Atilano
Maria Atilano
Finals Week is an extremely stressful time for students and library staff. While a busy university library may seem like the last place for some R&R, outreach librarians can implement fun, engaging, and cost-effective events to foster academic success and mental wellbeing. Popular programs include service dogs in the library, free late-night coffee, a sleep zone, and pop-up Random Acts of Snacks. During this poster session, attendees will learn how to plan similar events and activities, assess ways to collaborate with other departments to increase reach and reduce costs, and define how to create goodwill while promoting student success.
