What stereotypes about working parents exist within the culture of academic libraries? In what ways are working mothers and fathers impacted by these stereotypes? Assessing, evaluating, and articulating the impact and value of library outreach work is a growing trend among academic librarians engaged in marketing and outreach. In order to assess and determine the effectiveness of this work, it is important to plan and align efforts with both library and campus strategic goals. Conducting copyright clearance and ingesting appropriate versions of faculty publications can be a labor intensive and time consuming process. At Loyola Marymount University (LMU), a medium-size, private institution, the Digital Library Program (DLP) had been conducting copyright clearance one publication at a time. This meant that it took an enormous amount of time from start to finish to review and process the list of publications on a given faculty member’s CV. Successful library outreach at Loyola Marymount University would be impossible without students. Whether it’s designing an event poster, conducting community tours, spreading information via word-of-mouth, or creating content for social media, students are involved at every level of our programming and outreach efforts. This presentation will explore some of the successes (and failures) of integrating students as employees and volunteers to help promote the college library. By trusting students to carry the message of the library into the campus community, this presentation will illustrate how outreach teams can develop more efficient, organic, and creative marketing strategies.

Librarian and faculty collaborations are the most essential component of any successful information literacy program. How can librarians entice faculty to collaborate? A wide range of outreach strategies have been chronicled in the literature, including brown bag lunch discussions, faculty focus groups, librarian-faculty grants, librarian participation in faculty governance, and workshops. This presentation offers a case study of how one library’s assessment of data
gathered from its public service desk led to changes and improvements in service. The William H. Hannon Library at Loyola Marymount University (LMU) recorded all of the questions and answers asked at its Information Desk from Fall 2009 to the present using the Gimlet (http://gimlet.us) electronic question tracking system. A content analysis was performed on the data that led to advancements in signage and a new knowledge base of FAQ’s. In addition, new services were implemented related to technology and research that addressed user needs.
