An Alternative Method Of Title Authority Control: The Shifted-Authority Control Model For Chinese Classics, Maiko Kimura

This study investigates the effectiveness of a library-cataloging model developed by the author, namely, the shifted-authority control (SAC) model, for retrievals with fewer omissions in the field of Chinese classics. Since there is almost no title authority data for Chinese classics in Japan, the normal authority control model is unsuitable. To determine whether the SAC model can address this problem, a prototype authority database for searching the titles of Chinese classics was constructed. Post-Custodial And Collaborative: A Primer For Memory Institutions Beginning Digital Archiving Projects, Lindsey Memory

This paper reviews the three major types of digital archiving projects: memory institutions’ digital archiving projects, community-based archiving, and personal digital archiving. An examination of some common challenges and opportunities present in most of these projects-- particularly any in the post-custodial model-- follows, with illustrative examples of various digital archiving projects. This paper may serve as a primer for memory institutional staff wishing to understand the landscape of digital archiving projects, both within and without the authoritative, disciplined approach most commonly taken by memory institutions.

The Ultimate Survey: Asking One Question At A Time To Get Feedback From Library Users, Leticia Camacho, Brian Wages, Taylor Harris

Libraries use surveys and other instruments to gather feedback from their users. However, with competition from many other campus entities requesting input, how can survey fatigue be avoided? To gather this feedback, the Social Sciences Reference Desk utilized a short, fun and easy method. Each week for 10 weeks during the fall semester of 2017, the reference assistants wrote a survey question on a whiteboard and provided sticky notes for patrons to write their answers. The survey provided valuable information about patrons’ needs and expectations. It also fostered changes that were easily implemented to improve the delivery of library services.

An online instructional framework, called “decision-based learning,” helps students learn to think like an expert through making a series of simple decisions that the expert has trained into his or her thought patterns. This framework is currently being tested in one-hour information literacy workshops for engineering and technology students. This lightning talk briefly describes the decision-based learning method and results of this study so far.

A Space For Every Student: Assessing The Utility Of A Family Friendly Study Room In A University Library, Tyler Graff, Bob Ridge, Holt Zaugg

Students currently in and returning to college are increasingly likely to have children. The demands of academic and family life can conflict, making it difficult for student parents to navigate both. Brigham Young University recently built a Family Friendly Study Room in the university library to provide a place for student-parents to care for their children while engaging in academic work. This study assessed the impact of the FFSR on patrons. Results show that the space is highly valued and offers both academic and relationship benefits. Current First Year Writing research seeks to address the need to help students meet the Council of Writing Program Administrators objectives on source evaluation while also changing current pedagogy methods (Meola, 2004; Ostenson 2014; SHEG, 2016; Wineburg & McGrew, 2017). This paper seeks to compare two different source evaluation pedagogies, YSearch and Decision Based Learning, taught by Brigham Young University’s library to determine which module is more effective at teaching students source evaluation skills. To answer these questions, this study uses both quantitative and qualitative methods utilizing a quasi-experimental design by conducting an open comparison between the two pedagogy modules.

Gottfried Keller And The Fictionalization Of Switzerland, Richard Hacken

Gottfried Keller was one of the best-known 19th-century Swiss authors of literary realism. This article compares and contrasts socioeconomic conditions of the Swiss during the Industrial Revolution with those of a counterfeit Switzerland that Keller fictionalized into a decalogy (10 thematically connected novellas) called "The People of Seldwyla." The most frequently quoted titles of the cycle are "A Village Romeo and Juliet" and "Clothes Make the Man."

In the changing academic libraries environment, area studies and special collections, marked by a high level of expertise in a specialized area, are faced with the challenge of articulating their value and becoming connected with a broad range of local users. This article shows that exhibitions can be a powerful instrument for making a convincing case for the relevance of these specialized collections to local users. It discusses a model case of strategic exhibition development for the Gordon W.
