In the spirit of this year’s theme of “opening access,” our panel highlights how library faculty are making technology more accessible for the CUNY community. Despite the rising costs of journal prices and the stagnation of library budgets, librarians have employed low-cost and free techniques to improve access to library services. The panelists’ projects provide helpful examples of CUNY librarians’ work to increase access for our communities through technology.

This presentation will share the experiences at one university that took a collaborative approach to building an institutional repository and creating a scholarly communication program on campus. All aspects of the collaboration and process will be discussed including successes, failures, roadblocks and campus-wide wins. Presenters will discuss on how the library leveraged their knowledge to solidify a relationship with the Office of Research, the Faculty Center, and other partners around campus to stimulate need and engage in conversations with faculty and administrators. This was all accomplished with no set position dedicated to these needs, and one reference and instruction librarian …

Although summer tends to be when we might experience a bit of a respite on campus, that was certainly not the case here at the JET Library. The library underwent some significant renovations to two of our instruction rooms, Educational Resource Center, and the Suffolk Extension Center Library. We also acquired several new products and technologies such as the DigitalCommons and BrowZine, which you may read about further in this issue of JETstream. At the start of the semester, we continued our annual tradition of hosting the JET Library Pizza Party to welcome the incoming freshmen, as well as our …

23 Framework Things: Minnesota Librarians On The Cutting Edge Of Information Literacy Practice, Amy Mars, Trent Brager
Library Staff Publications & Presentations
ACRL released the new Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education in 2015, and since then librarians nationwide have been seeking support and resources for how to implement these new best practices at their institution and in their teaching practice. MLA's Instruction RoundTable (IRT) responded by creating 23 Framework Things (https://23frameworkthings.wordpress.com/), an online professional development opportunity that helps Minnesota librarians learn about the Framework, engage with it through activities, earn prizes/badges, and share strategies with an emerging community of practice. This session will feature a showcase of librarians from different types of academic institutions, large and small, sharing how they …

Searching for information is often nonlinear and iterative, requiring the evaluation of a range of information sources and the mental flexibility to pursue alternate avenues as new understanding develops. Business research frequently relies on using often-expensive information products to gain or protect some sort of market advantage or position. This lesson will introduce students to the idea that information is a valuable and essential tool for …

The Perfect Storm: The Convergence Of Social, Mobile And Photo Technologies In Libraries, Wendy Abbott, Jessie Donaghey, Joanna Hare, Peta J. Hopkins
Wendy Abbott
The intersection of mobile and photographic technologies with social networks has produced platforms such as Instagram. The way libraries are using these platforms has not been investigated in depth. This research aims to discover trends in the use of Instagram by libraries, reporting on selected libraries’ experiences and intentions behind capturing and sharing images on Instagram. Recommendations will be made on how librarians can transform relationships and engagement with their communities through mobile photo sharing, taking advantage of ‘the perfect storm’ of technological convergence.
