Christian Libraries For The Next Generation: Expanding Access To Evangelical Literature, Gregory A. Smith Nov 2009

Christian Libraries For The Next Generation: Expanding Access To Evangelical Literature, Gregory A. Smith

Gregory A. Smith

Recent changes in the world of information present unique challenges and opportunities for the dissemination of evangelical literature. This report suggests six ways that the Association of Christian Librarians can support evangelical education and scholarship in a context that is increasingly global, Web-based, and free from the confines of the traditional college campus. Implementing a combination of these strategies could make evangelical literature much more accessible via the Web, the dominant delivery platform of our day. However, choices among available strategies must take account of competition within the marketplace.

Returning To The Sources: The Literature Of Christian Librarianship, Gregory A. Smith Jun 2009

Returning To The Sources: The Literature Of Christian Librarianship, Gregory A. Smith

Faculty Publications and Presentations

By definition, a research study explores new intellectual territory yet builds on previous inquiry that has led up to it. However, many sources that explore the connections between Christian faith and the information professions fail to acknowledge the existence of prior discourse on the subject. The author has assembled a database of more than 450 sources that discuss topics such as philosophy and ethics of librarianship from a Christian perspective; the mediation of Christian/religious information in various library contexts; Christian, religious, and theological publishing; and more. Insights from these sources can help readers develop professionally and engage in productive dialogue …

Building An Institutional Repository In Hard Times, Michael Holt, Fatih Oguz, Deborah Davis, Cliff Landis

Cliff Landis

This poster presents an overview of an exploratory research initiative to examine and assess the viability of developing an institutional repository system at a teaching-oriented four-year university with minimal monetary commitment. A need has been identified for an institutional repository and necessary steps have been taken to implement it. Several departments worked together to create a prototype Institutional Repository using DSpace, an open source repository software. This repository represents a unique endeavor, in that it has been instituted at a non-research based university and has chosen to involve students in the planning, design, implementation, and documentation stages of the project. …

Dipping Into A Shallow Pool Or Beginning A Deeper Conversation: A Case Study Of A Minister's Engagement With The Internet For Preaching, David H. Michels Jan 2009

Dipping Into A Shallow Pool Or Beginning A Deeper Conversation: A Case Study Of A Minister's Engagement With The Internet For Preaching, David H. Michels

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

The study considers the question “What is the pastor’s experience of engagement with the Internet for preaching?” The study responds to van der Laan’s work on the potential negative impact of Internet use by Protestant Christian ministers for sermon preparation. My case study ethnographically explores one minister’s experience of Internet seeking (IS) for sermon preparation alongside earlier research on clergy information behavior. The respondent recounted being actively engaged with the Internet in the course of his devotional and intentional IS. He appeared to use online sources critically, and his formal IS activities for sermon preparation were comparable to earlier descriptions …

Faith And Literature: A Look At Book Censorship, Laura Cox Jan 2009

Faith And Literature: A Look At Book Censorship, Laura Cox

Honors Theses

For centuries, society has debated the issue of book censorship. Before Johannes Gutenberg introduced the printing press in 1455, the burning of hand-scribed books destroyed limited copies and guaranteed they would not be read. With the printing press, books could be produced in greater numbers; yet, printed speech was still a commodity that could be controlled. In 1517, Pope Leo X condemned Martin Luther's Ninety Five Theses, an early example of religious censorship of materials deemed dangerous or subversive. Political censorship quickly followed when Emperor Charles V issued the Edict ofWorms, containing a "Law ofPrinting" which banned the printing, copying, …

A Conversational Model For Qualitative Research: A Case Study Of Clergy And Religious Knowledge, Daniel Roland, Don A. Wicks

Daniel Roland

This paper describes the qualitative research interview as a conversation designed to gain understanding of the world of research informants. It illustrates the potential of the qualitative research interview when the researcher is able to enter into and maintain a conversation with the research informant as an insider in the latter's community. The paper draws from lessons learned in a case study of a clergy-person's preparation of their Sunday sermon, and proposes an innovative research design model that addresses the validity and reliability concerns related to the methodology. Specifically, this model develops an insider perspective of the phenomenon of study …
