This paper will discuss the budgeting and preservation problems that are prevalent in institutions specializing in historical collections. The sizes of the institutions that will be reviewed include small and medium-sized specialized museums along with local and regional historical societies, based on research and a survey sent to these kinds of institutions. Three types of artifacts that are commonly found in these institutions – paper, photographs, and textiles- will be examined to get a clear understanding of their preservation problems and needs. Following the Enlightenment, Western adherence to positivist theory influenced practices of Western research and documentation. Prior to the introduction of positivism into Western scholarship, innovations in printing technology, literary advancements, and the development of capitalism encouraged the passing of copyright statutes by nation-states in fifteenth century Europe. The evolution of copyright and positivism in Europe influenced United States copyright and its protection of the author, as well as the practice of archiving and its role in interpreting history. Saint Anne's Middle School is a Catholic, bilingual, bicultural, middle school for girls that participates in the Milwaukee Parental School Choice Program. This case study explored reading and language arts as experienced in the school through the lens of a school library media specialist. The students’ social, emotional, and intellectual needs appeared to be met at the school for the most part. The school also exhibited best practices for teaching reading at the middle school level to bilingual students. For The General Diffusion Of Knowledge: Social, Juvenile And Mercantile/Mechanic Libraries In Colonial America And The Early Republic, Gwenlyn Symons

This thesis examines the evolving educational purposes of social, juvenile, and mercantile/mechanic libraries in British North America from 1731 to 1830. Analyzing contemporary accounts about these libraries, their book catalogs, and social libraries' rules and regulations demonstrates that these institutions constructed their educational missions in response to regional attitudes towards education, republicanism, social attitudes towards children and youth, and educational reform movements. Parallels can be drawn from this work to modern ideas about the role of public libraries that explains our attitudes towards libraries in education and society today.
