A Study To Determine The Effectiveness Of An Interest Grouping Classification For Primary Grade Children, Dianne T. Mcafee Williams

The purpose was to determine if a subject arrangement of easy fiction books, based on the interests of primary-grade children, and denoted by picture symbols, would make the students more satisfied with, and independent in, their book selections, as compared to an author arrangement of easy fiction books.

The study was divided into two parts, the former dealing with the author arrangement and the latter dealing with the subject arrangement. Tally sheets of student subject requests were kept by the librarian in a comparison of the two arrangements. In order to alleviate some of the workload from the sole librarian of the Hartline School District in Eastern Washington, high school students were utilized as library aides. However, that created another problem which was how to efficiently train the student librarians. From this need, a curriculum was designed for teaching library aides for regular, clerical duties, to tell stories to the elementary students, and to aid in the typing and filing of catalog cards.

Since man learned to communicate with other men, storytelling has been a means for relating information, for teaching a lesson and for entertaining. As an elementary major with certification as a school librarian I will have daily opportunities to use storytelling with children. For this reason I decided to do this project on the different techniques of storytelling. The project gave me a chance to use different techniques to make the beginnings of a story pack I'll have for years and that I'll use year after year.
