Entropy Reduction Of English Text Using Variable Length Grouping, Vincent Norman Ast
Entropy Reduction Of English Text Using Variable Length Grouping, Vincent Norman Ast
Dissertations and Theses
It is known that the entropy of English text can be reduced by arranging the text into groups of two or more letters each. The higher the order of the grouping the greater is the entropy reduction. Using this principle in a computer text compressing system brings about difficulties, however, because the number of entries required in the translation table increases exponentially with group size. This experiment examined the possibility of using a translation table containing only selected entries of all group sizes with the expectation of obtaining a substantial entropy reduction with a relatively small table. An expression was …

Cataloging Of Audio-Visual Equipment, Tanna Murry
Honors Theses
For my Honors Special Study, I decided to catalog the audio-visual equipment that belongs to the Educational Department. I feel this project was a benefit not only to me but also to the Department. While I gained some much needed experience in cataloging equipment, the Educational department gained two complete records of its audio-visual equipment--one for the Media Lab and one for the Curriculum Lab. The cards contain the serial numbers of the audio-visual equipment to serve as a means of identification. Also both instructors and students of education will now be able to tell at a glance what equipment …

A Measure Of The Library Skills Of High School Graduates Of Washington State As Demonstrated By Freshman Of Central Washington State College, Malcolm Douglas Alexander
All Master's Theses
This paper presents the study of library skills possessed by the 1971 entering freshman class at Central Washington State College. The study was designed to provide data to library faculty about the skills in which the students required instruction. The students tested possessed a selected list of library skills at the 47th percentile as measured by Ethel M. Feagley' s test A Library Orientation Test For College Freshmen. The hypothesis that they would not possess the skills at the 50th percentile was upheld.
