Objective

A continual problem confronting the implementation of standardized vocabularies such as SNOMED CT is that their expressive flexibility and power provide more than one way to represent a given concept. The goal of this study was to investigate how the CliniClue™ Expression Transformer tool could be used to help in discerning similarities and differences among three separate sets of clinical research concepts coded in SNOMED CT by three different paid expert coding companies.

Methods

Initial editing of the companies’ coded datasets was required to enable accurate input into CliniClue Version: 2006.2.0030 Expression Transformer tool. The normal forms of the …

Digital Collections Task Force Report, Barbara Lewis, Brian Falato, Richard Bernardy, Pete Reehling, Ilene Frank

Libraries, museums, archives, and similar institutions worldwide are digitizing their physical collections and creating born‐digital resources, all in an effort to make them accessible to people everywhere. The digitization program at the University of South Florida Tampa Library has been active since the mid 1990s. Today it is expected that, as the Library proceeds with its ARL collections initiatives, the demands on this program will increase dramatically.

In order to meet these new demands, changes are necessary to increase the productivity and capacity of the operations and to improve the accessibility and visibility of the collections. These challenges and their …

Located at 430 Bay Street NE in downtown St. Petersburg, this facility has offered senior residential living since opening in 1968. In the early 1960s, Southwest Florida Presbyterians sought solutions to the problem of people (mostly retirees) who had difficulty locating affordable housing. With loan assistance from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, local Presbyteries began to build facilities. As of summer 2008, the Presbyterian Homes and Housing Foundation of Florida, Inc., operated Presbyterian Towers with sponsorship by the Tampa Bay …

Erica Jong, writing at Huffington Post about GOP VPcandidate, Governor Sarah Palin: "White trash America certainly has allure for voters. Some people think rednecks are more American than Harvard educated intellectuals of mixed race." Jong's remarks indicate a violent classism among liberal intellectuals that leaves no room for the working class poor. Jong indicates that "Harvard education" is the top of the U.S. education experience and then demonstrates her sense of classist hierarchy that ranks people according to socioeconomic status and other class markers such as weapons.

Ms. Susan B. Donoff, a graduate student in history at the University of South Florida, investigated the horrific 25 March 1911 fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in New York City. As part of her research, she sought to examine how the fire transformed the labor movement and how notable leaders of the time—especially Frances Perkins and members of Tammany Hall— assumed important roles in promoting progressive reforms. The College of Marine Science, a Tampa-based academic unit of the University of South Florida, physically resides on the St. Petersburg campus. Since its beginnings as a Marine Science Institute in the late 1960s, this unit and its mission have grown to occupy an academic department within the College of Natural Sciences, later the College of Arts and Sciences, and as a distinct college within the University. The thirteen photographic prints included in this collect represent images primarily from the early years of the St. Petersburg campus.
