Academic Library Outreach To Minority Students: The Role The Library Plays In Meeting The Needs Of Minority Students At Francis Marion University, Bernadette Johnson

South Carolina Libraries

As college student populations nationwide become more racially and ethnically diverse, it is imperative that academic libraries provide services and resources to meet the changing needs.

In a span of nearly 20 years, Francis Marion University’s student population has shifted from 74% white and 24% black to nearly 50% black. Because of this, James A. Rogers Library at FMU is challenged with meeting these changing needs.

In efforts to diversify its services, James A. Rogers Library gives biennial surveys to FMU students to assess student needs and perception of the library and in 2010, the library created an African-American collection.

The Book Vs. E-Book: E-Book Survey Report, Susan Silverman

South Carolina Libraries

During the Spring Semester 2014 at Winthrop University an E-book survey was administered to Winthrop faculty, staff, and students. The objectives of the survey were (1) to inform the patrons that the library does have e-books available to them, (2) to ascertain if they have used any of the e-books for their research, (3) to determine which format, print or e-book, is their primary preference and (4) which format do they think is most important as part of the permanent library collection. The results, including comments from the faculty, staff and students, were compiled and are presented in this paper.

Good News For A Change, Eric Shoaf

South Carolina Libraries

Technology, user needs and expectations, and the evolving role of the library in society are all driving a pace of change not seen previously in the library world. As library workers confront this environment of flux, many seek to understand the change process and their response to its pervasiveness. This article adapts a model of change developed in a different sphere and proposes its use in the library environment in order to assist library workers and provide a process that can alleviate some of the stress of change.

Plan, Practice, Participate: Tips For Libraries Considering Implementation Of Ebsco Discovery Service, Alison K. Jones Oct 2014

Plan, Practice, Participate: Tips For Libraries Considering Implementation Of Ebsco Discovery Service, Alison K. Jones

South Carolina Libraries

During the 2013 Fall Semester, Charleston School of Law’s Sol Blatt Jr. Law Library purchased EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) to replace the clunky, antiquated federated search system we had used for years. We chose EBSCO Discovery Service because we like the single, unified searching of our databases and catalog, along with the ability to customize our EDS page. While the setup and rollout of EDS has taken some time, we are very excited to now have it complete for our patrons. For libraries considering implementing EDS, this paper offers tips to help the process go as smoothly as possible.
