Rapid changes and uncertainty from these events have created a significant amount of shifts to academic libraries, higher education, and society in general. Such shifts have yielded new perspectives and innovations in how librarians approach delivering services, supporting student success, managing staff and physical spaces, embracing new technology, and managing data. This report attempts to provide a snapshot of developments worth noting.

Keep Calm And Pivot: Resetting Library Engagement With Remote Outreach, Maria Atilano, Giannina Medell, Stephanie Race

Library Faculty Presentations & Publications

This presentation will describe how one academic library reset their engagement priorities and reconnected with their audience with the use of remote outreach programs. Over the course of one academic year, library staff created, hosted, and assessed more than a dozen asynchronous remote outreach programs for students and faculty, including many who never stepped foot on campus. Attendees will learn how to coordinate efforts within their organization and think outside the box for ways to promote their collections and resources for an online audience.

Sparking Joy In The University Of North Florida Rare Books Collection: A Case Study In Reappraisal And Deaccessioning, Susan Swiatosz

Library Faculty Presentations & Publications

Rare book or non-circulating research collections are often overlooked when it comes to collection reappraisal or deaccessioning, that is until space considerations bring the issue to the forefront. After all, no librarian likes discarding books, particularly historic ones. This case study shows how the Special Collections and University Archives at the University of North Florida reappraised their rare book collection and created collecting criteria to aid them in the disposition of rare and non-circulating books. Although the lack of space was clearly a priority, the rare and non-circulating book collection at UNF had lacked collection development guidance for many years, …

Library Faculty Presentations & Publications

During COVID-19, University of North Florida’s Thomas G. Carpenter Library quickly expanded its social media content in order to better reach students, faculty, and staff, all of whom suddenly found themselves working and learning remotely. The Carpenter Library’s Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts (@unflibrary) quickly became the face of the library, whereas in the past they had merely supported outreach, promotion, and advocacy. By transitioning in-person programs to virtual formats, focusing on supportive and uplifting campaigns, and harnessing interactive modes of communication like Instagram Stories and video, outreach staff increased and maintained the library’s online following while also creating a …

Every other year, the ACRL Research Planning and Review Committee provides a scan of higher education, detailing the current environment and its anticipated impact on libraries. While this year's Environmental Scan is no different in terms of scope, we are now facing challenges to higher education on a scale not seen in decades. Across the globe, the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the lives and livelihoods of millions of people, and in the United States, this disruption has been compounded by the eruption of protests surrounding civil rights and other social justice issues.

While the 2021 Environmental Scan covers developments over …

You might think that there would not be enough to do at home for a staff working with archival materials—after all, most of the collection consists of rare items that never leave the building. When it began to look like the University of North Florida (UNF) would be closed in March 2020, our small team in the Thomas G. Carpenter Library Special Collections Department had to get creative.

Using The Harvesting Method To Submit Etds Into Proquest: A Case Study Of A Lesser-Known Approach, Marielle Veve

Library Faculty Presentations & Publications

The following case study describes an academic library’s recent experience implementing the harvesting method to submit electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) into the ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global database (PQDT). In this lesser-known approach, ETDs are deposited first in the institutional repository (IR), where they get processed, to be later harvested for free by ProQuest through the IR’s Open Archives Initiative (OAI) feed. The method provides a series of advantages over some of the alternative methods, including students’ choice to opt-in or out from ProQuest, better control over the embargo restrictions, and more customization power without having to rely on …

Collaboration And Integration: Embedding Library Resources In Canvas, Jennifer L. Murray, Daniel E. Feinberg

Library Faculty Presentations & Publications

The University of North Florida (UNF) transitioned to Canvas as its Learning Management System (LMS) in summer 2017. This implementation brought on opportunities that allowed for a more user-friendly learning environment for students. Working with students in courses which were in-person, hybrid, or online, brought about the need for the library to have a place in the Canvas LMS. Students needed to remember how to access and locate library resources and services outside of Canvas. During this time, the Thomas G. Carpenter Library’s online presence was enhanced, yet still not visible in Canvas. It became apparent that the library needed …

Community Engagement: Leveraging Library Online Tools To Support Local Historical Organizations, Jennifer L. Murray

Library Faculty Presentations & Publications

Among Floridians, Jacksonville is known as the “First Coast.” It is a reference to the fact that Northeast Florida has some of the oldest European settlements in North America. The numerous local historical organizations are forever challenged to preserve and share the rich history of “all that is Jacksonville–including early settlers, 19th- and 20th-century urban planning and architecture, civil rights and Black history, city governance, and our national parks heritage.” They often do not have the resources needed, but local academic libraries are rich in resources and tools that can benefit organizations outside the library and help bring more awareness …

Book Review: Reappraisal And Deaccessioning In Archives And Special Collections, Susan Swiatosz Jan 2020

Book Review: Reappraisal And Deaccessioning In Archives And Special Collections, Susan Swiatosz

Library Faculty Presentations & Publications

As our institutional archives mature and we gain more insight into what materials our researchers use, we become more discerning in what we collect and preserve. Real estate in any archives or special collections is valuable, and overcrowding is a common lament. In time, we become laser focused as to what collections within our holdings resonate with users. Equally, we all have collections that for whatever well-intentioned reason were accessioned, processed, and maintained, but that are inappropriate for our institutions. In her book Reappraisal and Deaccessioning in Archives and Special Collections, Laura Uglean Jackson has compiled 13 case studies describing …
