The Changing Reference Landscape: An Assessment Of Mann Library's Combined Service Desk, Ryan Tolnay

This project examined and assessed reference services at Albert R. Mann Library following the creation of a combined service desk. I conducted a literature review and created a survey to determine what mode of research help patrons preferred. Survey respondents were fairly evenly split between their preferences and often stated the same reasons for their preference- convenience and accessibility. Recommendations include instituting a user experience team and training all access services employees on reference techniques and library resources. This will provide patrons with more accurate answers to their questions and continue to improve library services.

An Investigation Of Digital Reference Interviews: A Dialogue Act Approach, Keisuke Inoue

The rapid increase of computer-mediated communications (CMCs) in various forms such as micro-blogging (e.g. Twitter), online chatting (e.g. digital reference) and community- based question-answering services (e.g. Yahoo! Answers) characterizes a recent trend in web technologies, often referred to as the social web. This trend highlights the importance of supporting linguistic interactions in people's online information-seeking activities in daily life - something that the web search engines still lack because of the complexity of this hu- man behavior. In the summer of 2008 Wendt Commons undertook the ambitious task of formalizing a training program for all library staff (including students) who work at the combined services desk. Panelists will discuss the development process, show materials created for the pilot program, and offer an evaluation of the outcome. This article presents a research agenda for the study of digital reference. The agenda stems from a research symposium held at Harvard in August 2002. The agenda defines digital reference as "the use of human intermediation to answer questions in a digital environment." The agenda also proposes the central research question in digital reference - "How can human expertise be effectively and efficiently incorporated into information systems to answer user questions?" The definition and question are used to outline a research agenda centered on how the exploration of digital reference relates to other fields of inquiry.

Question Answering: Cnlp At The Trec-2002 Question Answering Track, Anne R. Diekema, Jiangping Chen, Nancy Mccracken, Necati Ercan Ozgencil, Mary D. Taffet

This paper describes the retrieval experiments for the main task and list task of the TREC-2002 question-answering track. The question answering system described automatically finds answers to questions in a large document collection. The system uses a two-stage retrieval approach to answer finding based on matching of named entities, linguistic patterns, keywords, and the use of a new inference module. In answering a question, the system carries out a detailed query analysis that produces a logical query representation, an indication of the question focus, and answer clue words.
