Work and learning are essential facets of our existence, yet sociocultural barriers have historically limited access and opportunity for women in multiple contexts, including their professional pursuits. Such sociocultural barriers are particularly pronounced in technical domains and have relegated minoritized voices to the margins. As a result of these barriers, those affected have suffered strife, turmoil, and subjugation. Hence, it is important to investigate how women can subvert such structural limitations and find channels through which they can seek support and guidance to navigate their careers. School of Information Studies - Post-doc and Student Scholarship

The Urban Libraries Trauma Study (ULTS) conducted by Urban Librarians Unite (ULU) examines trauma that urban public library workers experience in the workforce through their work with the public and interlibrary relationships. Drawing on interviews, focus groups, and a trauma forum, this paper discusses the problem of trauma in the library. It demonstrates a grounded way to engage library staff in research and change. Finally, this paper concludes with ideas proposed by the forum participants to begin addressing trauma in the library workplace and provide areas to look to going forward.

Call numbers play a central role in the ability of libraries to shelve books next to other books on the same or similar subject. With e-books making up an increasing proportion of library holdings, it is important that e-books can be e-shelved and discovered along with their print counterparts. At the start of 2021, e-books in the Cornell University Library Catalog did not have the same detailed classification numbers in their MARC records that print books receive. Study of individual differences in learning processes has a long history across several lines of psychology inquiry. Learning style theory (LST) is arguably a broadly recognized approach to education, embraced by educators theoretically and practically. Accommodation of individual learning styles with differential instruction is supported and endorsed globally, and well-funded. Yet empirical evidence in the literature that examines augmented learning achieved via learning styles accommodation in pedagogical practices is not compelling. You might think that the collections of a major library would be unaffected by cultural prejudices. However, even the University of Rochester's collections are sadly lacking in works by and about scientists of color. Our poster describes our work to rectify this situation in order to inspire current and future BIPOC students to go into STEM fields. One scientist who we feature is Joy Buolamwini, who recently earned her PhD from MIT’s Media Lab. She noticed that analyses of photographs are often biased, so she formed the Algorithmic Justice League to study and correct that problem. Our collections are more …

This presentation details remediation work done on harmful legacy metadata as part of the Syracuse University Libraries digital collections migration of the Sideshow Performers Collection, which contains digitized images from the Ronald G. Becker Collection of Charles Eisenmann photographs. The discussion focuses on deconstructing the legacy information and reconstructing it in ways that center the individual performer depicted, rather than portraying them as a medicalized specimen.

Problematic Expectations: Using Close Reading To Surface Emotional Labor In School Librarian Job Postings, Alexandra Grimm

Although emotional labor—defined as the process(es) by which a worker manages their feelings in order to produce the desired emotional response in a customer—has been studied in various fields and specific domains of librarianship, this topic has yet to be examined in school librarianship. In this exploratory article, I perform a close reading of school librarian job postings to surface expectations of emotional labor and explicate connections to the feminized history of librarianship. The article closes with a call to action, outlining steps for administrators and researchers to prevent the potential harms of emotional labor in school librarianship.

In late May 2021, Syracuse University’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion asked the Syracuse University Libraries to help prepare a reading list about Juneteenth. Library employees, including liaison librarians and members of the Libraries’ Diversity and Inclusion Team, quickly put together a list of resources for each day of the 19-day campus celebration of Juneteenth. We will discuss our working process, lessons learned, and how we might respond to and proactively approach similar requests in the future. We conclude with some reflections on the future of the holiday and protecting it from adulteration now that it has achieved federal recognition.

This lesson plan engages students with primary materials as ingredients for creative work, with attention to the ways researchers read and notice in archives and special collections. This hands-on creative activity helps students to identify and analyze many facets of materials in a special collections setting, and it allows students to explore those materials together. Students create found poems based on a prompt distributed by the librarian-instructor and then engage in reflective sharing of the poems.
