Taking Root: Librarians Help New Forestry Students Create A Learning Community, Erica Lopez, Tina Oswald

Librarian and Staff Publications

Librarians have studied and discussed library anxiety ever since Constance Mellon coined the term in 1986. While it may be challenging for librarians to imagine any anxiety about coming into a library and using the available resources, students experience a multitude of stressors as they embark on their college journey. Many are taking college-level courses for the first time. Some might have a roommate they know, or not. (Sometimes the ones you know are a bigger problem than the ones you do not.) Some may be juggling a full course load with work or family responsibilities. Many are on their …

Rethinking Information Literacy Assessment: Relevance, Reliability, And Validity Of Constructs And Measures, Melissa Clark Jan 2019

Rethinking Information Literacy Assessment: Relevance, Reliability, And Validity Of Constructs And Measures, Melissa Clark

Librarian and Staff Publications

Information literacy assessment has traditionally approached student learning as the acquisition of declarative knowledge, which can be measured with easily-graded true/false and multiple-choice questions. Although such measures may prove highly reliable in test-retest situations, they are not valid measures of knowledge or learning, because they fail to test procedural and conditional knowledge, both of which are essential for students to reach the higher levels of Bloom’s taxonomy. This omission can partially explain the disconnect between scores on tests of information literacy and students’ continued poor performance on research assignments. Furthermore, information literacy assessment has failed to address the social and …

Fostering Creative Thinking And Reflexive Evaluation In Searching: Instructional Scaffolding And The Zone Of Proximal Development In Information Literacy Acquisition, Melissa Clark

Librarian and Staff Publications

Searching for information, which is not as easy as many students believe, requires creativity, formative evaluation, and persistence. Cultivating proficient and expert searches requires more than the vicarious and enactive experiences described by Bandura1 that are frequently employed in traditional library instruction: students need to be supported and coached in working in their Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), which stimulates learning.2

Considerations Before Implementing Mobilecirc For A Deselection Project, Jodene R. Pappas Apr 2017

Considerations Before Implementing Mobilecirc For A Deselection Project, Jodene R. Pappas

Symposium on Arts and Research

In Fall 2014, Steen Library Administration developed a renovation project to repurpose an area for students to use, particularly graduate students. The northwest quadrant of the third floor in the library cleared for the project with materials deselected or shifted. Librarians estimated that about 105,000 volumes (15% of the stacks collection) could be deselected. Deselection is a routine task performed by libraries to create a more relevant and accessible collection for the users they serve. Library faculty use various criteria for each discipline and carefully consider each item.

To meet the deadline of September 1, 2015, an efficient method, tool, …

First Steps To Promoting Open Access For Research Data And Publications On Campus., Anjum Najmi, R Philip Reynolds, Dillon Wackerman

Librarian and Staff Presentations

Open Access (OA) is “the free, immediate, online availability of research articles coupled with the right to use these articles fully in the digital environment.” (SPARC, 2014) While much of the conversation about OA centers on business models, economics, workflow processes, institutional policy, and the transformative influence on academic publishing, limited dialogue occurs about best practices to guide educational and research institutions when planning to develop a policy on Open Access.

In 2015, the Dean’s Council at Stephen F Austin State University (SFASU) agreed to support Open Access on campus for research data and publications. The SFA Scholar Works, the …

Repositories: Models & Images, R Philip Reynolds, Dillon Wackerman

Librarian and Staff Presentations

Digital repositories most often collect traditional materials, such as theses, articles and images that do not require unique workflows or practices. While these types of items are common, repositories can also expect to encounter non-traditional materials that can challenge the knowledge and experience of the repository manager. Whether because of new file formats, visual effects or certain aspects of performance art, there are certain items that require unique expertise and innovative design. These can include items such as 3D models, embeddable media, student exhibits and other unique works. As librarians, we should actively solicit these materials in order to more …
