SOJMC Faculty Research
Design Across the Disciplines: Learning the value of communication design through practice” is an OER (open educational resource), digital textbook under prototype testing in a media design course. The text is created in collaboration with a librarian, two faculty from different colleges and two students who have completed the course. This interdisciplinary team was formed with the directive to embrace the powers of design thinking through digital content to develop a product that truly recognizes the needs of the primary users, our students and key stakeholders, the faculty. Several semesters of student feedback provided the insights for considering textbook cost; …

A reality of dwindling resources in archives, as well as in higher education more broadly, is that the ability to purchase and maintain a specialized archives management and content management software is often out of reach. For Marshall University Special Collections, the solution to make finding aids and other digital archival materials accessible online required evaluating software already available at the university. Marshall Digital Scholar (MDS), an instance of the bepress institutional repository software, was chosen for its immediate availability, robust discovery services within the repository and through outside search engines, statistic tracking capability, metadata flexibility, support for multiple file …

Review Of Diversity And Inclusion In Libraries: A Call To Action And Strategies For Success, By Shannon D. Jones And Beverly Murphy, Kelli Johnson
Librarian Research
We have been talking about diversity and inclusion in the library world for a long time. There have been articles and books written on the subject. There are sessions at conferences. Our communities and our patrons are more diverse, so why hasn’t the profession become more diverse? Shannon Jones and Beverly Murphy have addressed the issue of making libraries more diverse and inclusive, taking it head-on with a systematic review of what diversity and inclusion mean for libraries and why they are important. But they don’t stop there. They segue into discussions on how to make our libraries and our …

Combining Efforts: Libraries As Mental Health Safe Spaces, Sabrina Thomas, Kacy J. Lovelace
Librarian Research
In the face of seemingly insurmountable, persisting problems, what is one thing that you could do to lift that burden in your own space, in your own building, or on your own walls? This defining question led to the creation of Marshall University (MU) Libraries Mental Health Initiative. The initiative began with an art exhibition titled: “Don’t Call Me Crazy: Resiliency through Art.” The goal of this exhibition was to encourage students, faculty, and staff to create artwork informed by mental health or to help process their own mental health. With more than 30 artists and 50 pieces filling the …

The Benefits Of Open Educational Resources (Oers) For Faculty And Students, Larry Sheret, Lindsey M. Harper
The Benefits Of Open Educational Resources (Oers) For Faculty And Students, Larry Sheret, Lindsey M. Harper
Librarian Research
Many Open Educational Resources (OERs) have been developed during the past ten years that have the same quality as those offered by major publishers. We will identify the pros and cons of switching from a traditional textbook to an OER. After the Q&A, we will work with the participants to locate an OER textbook that each participant will evaluate for possible adoption. This session is most suited to faculty who are teaching lower division General Education classes with a large number of students enrolled in a lecture or in multiple sections.

Navigating The Information Ecosystem: Getting Personal With Source Evaluation, If I Apply, Kathleen Phillips, Eryn D. Roles, Sabrina Thomas
Navigating The Information Ecosystem: Getting Personal With Source Evaluation, If I Apply, Kathleen Phillips, Eryn D. Roles, Sabrina Thomas
Librarian Research
Librarians have long pioneered source evaluation as the first step to healthy civic learning. Traditionally, systematic source evaluation focuses on content, but twenty-first century source evaluation must begin reflectively, and begins when the researcher takes personal inventory on their emotions attached to the investigative topic. The IF I APPLY tool is a new method to foster intellectual integrity during inquiry thinking, and a fresh way to introduce students to source evaluation encouraging lifelong learning.

English Faculty Research
The Jewish Chronicle (JC), a weekly newspaper based in London, England, offers free access to the text and video content on its website and subscription-based access to its full-text archive, which dates back to its founding in 1841. The search interface and the OCR underlying the page scans can be problematic at times, but this is nonetheless a valuable resource; over 175 years’ worth of material on Jewish history and the larger social culture will be of interest to scholars in a variety of fields.

Attitudinal, Normative, And Resource Factors Affecting Psychologists’ Intentions To Adopt An Open Data Badge: An Empirical Analysis, Lindsey M. Harper, Youngseek Kim
Attitudinal, Normative, And Resource Factors Affecting Psychologists’ Intentions To Adopt An Open Data Badge: An Empirical Analysis, Lindsey M. Harper, Youngseek Kim
Librarian Research
The purpose of this research is to investigate the attitudinal, normative, and resource factors affecting psychologists’ adoption of an open data badge. The theory of planned behavior was employed to demonstrate how these factors influence behavioral intentions to adopt an open data badge. This research used a survey method to examine to what extent those attitudinal, normative, resource factors influence psychologists’ behavioral intentions to adopt an open data badge, and therefore engage in data sharing behaviors. A national survey (n = 341) across the field of psychology showed that perceived benefit and perceived risk had significant positive and negative relationships …

In The Beginning... A Legacy Of Computing At Marshall University, Jack L. Dickinson, Arnold R. Miller Ed.E
Manuscripts
This book provides a brief history of the early computing technology at Marshall University, Huntington, W.Va., in the forty years: 1959-1999. This was before the move to Intel and Windows based servers. After installation of an IBM Accounting Machine in 1959, which arguably does not fit the modern definition of a computer, the first true computer arrived in 1963 and was installed in a room below the Registrar’s office. For the next twenty years several departments ordered their own midrange standalone systems to fit their individual departmental requirements. These represented different platforms from different vendors, and were not connected to …

Factors Affecting Psychologists’ Adoption Of An Open Data Badge, Lindsey M. Harper, Youngseek Kim
Librarian Research
The purpose of this research is to investigate the individual, normative and resource factors affecting psychologists’ adoption of an open data badge. The theory of planned behavior is employed as the theoretical framework to explain how these factors impact behavioral intention to adopt an open data badge. A national survey (n=341) of psychologists found that perceived benefits, norms of data sharing and attitude towards an open data badge had a significant positive relationship with attitude toward the open data badge, whereas perceived risk had a significant negative relationship. Perceived effort had a negative relationship to behavioral intention to adopt the …

Big Data's Impact On Privacy For Librarians And Information Professionals, Lindsey M. Harper, Shannon M. Oltmann
Big Data's Impact On Privacy For Librarians And Information Professionals, Lindsey M. Harper, Shannon M. Oltmann
Librarian Research
In a digital age, it is very difficult to maintain complete privacy when posting on social media or making purchases. Individual activity on the internet is increasingly collected by corporations, even with the user’s knowledge, and can be used to predict future behavior, purchasing choices or other sensitive subjects. This data analysis is often done without a user’s consent and in many cases presents unethical behavior and breaches of privacy. Big data can be beneficial to libraries in many ways, and if pointed at library systems, rather than the habits of patrons, can also keep privacy intact.

Marshall University Library has been experiencing a fruitful collaboration with various departments and programs on campus involving the publication of peer-reviewed journals, which are hosted on Marshall’s open access institutional repository (OAIR), Marshall Digital Scholar (MDS). Euscorpius, Marshall Journal of Medicine and Sermon Studies are currently publishing peer-reviewed research articles. Two other peer-reviewed journals are in the planning stage to begin publication this year. One of these, the Journal of Applied Digital Evidence (JADE) is a collaboration with the forensic sciences programs at Marshall University, Eastern Kentucky University and Purdue.
