Equity, Diversity, and Inclusivity (EDI) initiatives in public libraries are noble and endless endeavors that take many forms of action. Obviously, no one community, nor library, is the same. Consequently, no one community and/or library-centered EDI journey is the same. However, interestingly, progressive Illinois (IL) state libraries have walked the same roads. Interestingly, these realizations have led to a shift in priority and strategic focus resulting in many of these libraries to take action by contracting consultants to conduct full-scale equity assessments. Conclusions from these kinds of equity assessments have helped to contextualize and legitimize EDI-focused strategic planning decisions and …

Equity, diversity, and inclusivity (EDI) plans and initiatives are at the forefront of many library’s strategic planning (Mallon, 2019). Efforts, big or small, such as mandatory all-staff EDI training sessions (DGPL, 2021), EDI focused patron programming, or simply promoting the local library as a place of opportunity for all (ALA, 2019), demonstrate the American Library Association (ALA)’s Core Values in practice (ALA, 2006). The ALA has historically promoted themselves as supporters, allies, and anti-racists, playing an important role in many libraries’ strategic plans and philosophies. Literature illuminating the relationship between contemporary art and historical archives around the turn of the twenty-first century and how these interactions inform the evolution of archives in a digital multicultural age is the topic of this review. The literature reveals the extent to which art has been a means for members of marginalized groups to address their representation in historical archives, and also a means for archives to connect with a broader audience. Collaborations between artists and historical archives add new dimension to the debate about the nature of the archive as a creation in and of itself, and in …

Cultural Humility In Libraries, David A. Hurley, Sarah Kostelecky, Lori Townsend

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Purpose: The purpose of this article is to introduce the idea of cultural humility, distinguish it from cultural competence, and argue that it has a role in librarianship. Design/methodology/approach: We use an interdisciplinary exploration of the concept of humility to understand what cultural humility means and how it differs from cultural competence and other approaches to intercultural communication in libraries.

Findings: Despite some reservations with the term itself, we find that a practice of cultural humility is more appropriate to front-line interactions in library contexts than cultural competence models.

Since its inception six years ago, our institutional repository has provided a number of opportunities to increase campus diversity awareness and representation. Examples begin with use as the registration/schedule platform for our annual Diversity Conference and as a repository for keynotes and other conference sessions. The repository also houses student journals such as 'Dissenting Voices', and we have built online exhibits related to artifacts from other parts of the world (e.g., New Guinea). A new e-book imprint has enabled us to publish books in Spanish and about other times and cultures, e.g., 'Gilgamesh'. The repository has allowed us to look …

Countless studies and personal narratives have demonstrated that cultural, racial, and gender bias influence important aspects of academia, including traditional book and journal publishing. Scholarly communications and LIS publishing can challenge the traditional modes of publishing both in format and in content. Panelists discussed their work in this area, addressing topics like race, culture, sexuality, and gender in formats like print books, online journals, and institutional repositories.
