An Examination Of Research Data Sharing And Re-Use: Implications For Data Citation Practice, Hyoungjoo Park, Dietmar Wolfram

This study examines characteristics of data sharing and data re-use in Genetics and Heredity, where data citation is most common. This study applies an exploratory method because data citation is a relatively new area. The Data Citation Index (DCI) on the Web of Science was selected because DCI provides a single access point to over 500 data repositories worldwide and to over two million data studies and datasets across multiple disciplines and monitors quality research data through a peer review process. Archives and special collections are growing in importance and are moving quickly from the perimeter to the center of library activities and services. The University of Nebraska Lincoln Libraries invited me to conduct and facilitate a 1.5 day workshop/retreat on trends and strategic goals/initiatives for archives and special collections including review of the current organizational structure, staffing and services. Professional musicians were surveyed to determine how personal, amateur recordings of performances are shared with students and colleagues. Sharing files on social media is common, with Facebook, YouTube, and Vimeo used most frequently. Although these are popular social media platforms, they do not have enhanced format support and robust metadata. Additionally, licensing terms for each platform differ, and may be not in the best interest of the musician. Although recordings are not traditionally considered data, data curation principles can be applied to these types of files, and the library is positioned to become an active participant in this process.

This is my capstone project for completion of a Post MA certificate in Historic Preservation and Regionalism. I received the degree in Spring, 2019. The project involves recovering the legacy of a historic colonial church site in Belén, New Mexico. The work involves the descendant community’s sense of place and the continuity of memory and sacredness of Belen’s first church and original plaza.

Citing webpages has been a common practice in scholarly publications for nearly two decades as the Web evolved into a major information source. But over the years, more and more bibliographies have suffered from “reference rot”: cited URLs are broken links or point to a page that no longer contains the content the author originally cited. In this column, I look at several studies showing how reference rot has affected different academic disciplines. I also examine citation styles’ approach to citing web sources. Building relationships between university libraries The umbrella affiliation agreement between the University of Vermont and PUCP, in effect since 2010, initially focused on the subject areas of biomedical technology and instrumentation. However, as relationships on the two campuses were built and strengthened, other collaborative opportunities beyond the original focus emerged, including with Engineering, Public Administration, and the Libraries. The library-press relationship explored in P2L allows for transformative approaches in support and dissemination of scholarship. Effective exploitation of these partnerships is in the early stages and there is an opportunity to influence the outcomes to ensure they are as broadly applicable and scalable as possible. As Cliff Lynch (CNI) noted in his summary of the day’s conversation, we must do more exploration of both intra-institutional (library and press) and cross-institutional collaborations. He provided several compelling suggestions for partnerships, including new ways to promote and leverage library special collections as well as ideas for increasing discoverability of press content. Many small schools worry that they don’t have the resources to launch and run a successful institutional repository initiative. It might come as a surprise that their very smallness comes with sizable advantages. At Dominican University of California, Michael Pujals, Scholarly Communications Librarian, has identified and successfully drawn on these advantages to build a thriving initiative in a short amount of time, including offering services for conference and journal hosting, thesis and capstone publication, and individual scholar pages for faculty members.

In this session, members of the NISO Discovery to Delivery Topic Committee will discuss NISO projects, recommendations and standards dealing with hot topics around discovery and access of electronic content. Presentations will include updates on open access discovery, specifically the recommended practice Access and License Indicators (ALI) and discussion of a new project proposal regarding discoverability of open access material.
