Beyond The Software: The Importance Of Personal Communication To Ensure Access In Complex Ill And Other Borrowing Transactions, Andrew J. M. Smith, David Velasquez

Kansas Library Association College and University Libraries Section Proceedings

This paper focuses on the ILL aspects of a larger project investigating the continued availability of items identified in a 1991 bibliography (Dillard). For this stage of the research, the particular focus was on obtaining various theses and dissertations, as well as books and sheet music items. As Lowry (2006) noted, especially in the humanities and social sciences, the majority of dissertation and thesis research has traditionally not resulted in further publication, with only about 10% of this work being republished in other forms. This means that the original works are the only source of this research, and therefore there …

Scholarly Communications For Librarians: Developing A Mentoring Program To Support Tenure-Track Library Faculty, Anna R. Craft Mar 2022

Scholarly Communications For Librarians: Developing A Mentoring Program To Support Tenure-Track Library Faculty, Anna R. Craft

Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students

Many academic libraries are increasingly called upon to support and provide training and instruction to graduate students on scholarly communications issues such as open access, copyright, research data, identifying legitimate versus predatory publishing opportunities, and related topics. Many of these areas align with needs librarians face in their own work, especially for those whose jobs offer opportunities (or requirements) to participate in tenure and promotion processes. In order to meet their own professional development and career needs while also preparing to support the specialized needs of graduate students, librarians must keep abreast of the changing scholarly communications landscape and seek …

Transforming The Publishing Academy: How Moving Online And Focusing On Diversity And Inclusion Made Scholarly Publishing Support More Accessible To Graduate Students, Lidiya Grote, Latisha Reynolds, Alex Howard

Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students

Academic libraries frequently offer general research support services such as literature searching and citation management workshops for graduate students, however specific scholarly communications topics such as writing for an academic publication are less frequently addressed (Gannon-Leary & Bent, 2010; Perini & Calcagno, 2013). Support for scholarly publishing, data management and other scholarly communication topics are increasingly needed, and are the type of challenges with which librarians can assist. The University of Louisville Libraries in collaboration with the Graduate School offer a biennial, interdisciplinary, five-week publishing academy for graduate students.

The Publishing Academy is designed to introduce students to the scholarly …

Publications and Research

It hardly needs to be said that 2020 was a difficult year for the world. COVID-19 has infected over 120 million people and killed over 2 million as of March 2021 (Johns Hopkins). At the same time, police violence against people of color continues, even as communities engage in long-overdue reckoning initiatives. Across the globe, researchers, governments, and communities needed quick, open, up-to-date information on testing for, treating, and preventing COVID-19. Our increased dependence on technology during lockdowns provided some with safety and continuity, while others experienced the widening of the digital divide. There is no greater urgency than the …

Ted-Style Talk: Flying Blind: Creating A Library Orcid Integration Pilot, A.L. Carson, Matthew Murray Apr 2018

Ted-Style Talk: Flying Blind: Creating A Library Orcid Integration Pilot, A.L. Carson, Matthew Murray

Digital Initiatives Symposium

As part of the UNLV Libraries’ goal to determine an appropriate level of engagement with ORCID, our pre-pilot investigated the feasibility of a Libraries-led service to populate faculty ORCID profiles with citations for scholarly works, allowing UNLV to better track and promote their research. This project sought to test the requirements and scalability of using currently-available data to populate researcher profiles via the ORCID API, gauging the benefits against the cost in Library resources. We performed a field survey of similar institutions using ORCID, engaged with Libraries faculty for volunteers to create dummy profiles in the ORCID testing environment, and …

Are you looking for new ways to connect with faculty? Do you know how to best support faculty publishing? Grand Valley State University Libraries has developed a scholarly activity mapping template to document current scholarly and creative practices of faculty. The data gathered can be used to identify unmet faculty scholarly needs and reveal new opportunities to build relationships with faculty. Over the last several years, our liaison librarians have worked to closely integrate library instruction services into the curriculum of their liaison areas through the use of instruction plans. At the same time our research and publishing support expanded, …

Colby College's contribution to the bepress sponsored webinar. From bepress' description:

Undergraduate research initiatives are cropping up at institutions across the country, highlighting the need for undergraduate publication venues. Colleges and universities are finding that publishing undergraduate work not only completes the research cycle for emerging scholars; it also showcases the quality of an institution’s student work to prospective students and their parents, as well as to prospective faculty members.

Information - Access: Denied, Riccardo M. Purita

SURGE

I have been privileged during my lifetime to always have the opportunity to learn about something if I wanted to. When I became interested in music and psychology—or even when I was learning how to apply for college—I googled it. The resources to obtain information have always been there for me: access to computers, the internet, books, journals. It is hard to imagine my life without a computer or access to books to learn about the world, and even harder to imagine if I did not know how to read or write. For this, I can thank my education and …
