Ishi, the “last wild Indian in North America,” was “discovered” in 1911 and spent the last years of his life living in an anthropology museum. There he was studied by anthropologists and viewed by the public as a living exhibit. In this paper, I take some initial steps in arguing that Ishi, the person, became a document to most people. The similarities between Ishi and Suzanne Briet’s hypothetical antelope, newly discovered and placed in a zoo, are eerie. Ishi, like the antelope, is brought into public knowledge as both an initial document and a wide variety of secondary documents derived …

Tales of great heroes overcoming great monsters have been a part of storytelling since time immemorial. Some of these tales follow recurring patterns, and one such pattern is that of ‘The Dragonslayer.’ From tales of Tristan and Iseult and Saint George and the Dragon, to the confrontation with the dragon Smaug in The Hobbit, ‘The Dragonslayer’ has been an enduring example of a recurring pattern in storytelling.

Converting the online catalog to a cloud-based system. The library’s software-based catalog experienced technical issues whenever the hospital’s Information Technology department performed updates, and remote access to the system was not available. The authors describe the process of successfully converting the online catalog to a cloud-based system with remote access. It was critical for the library staff to preserve data from the former system. The initial step was to download the statistics from the former system to preserve them for future use. OBJECTIVE In January 2020, the Library migrated to a new Library Management System (LMS), Ex Libris Alma and Primo, that combines the functionality of a discovery service and the features of a traditional catalog. The Library’s eBooks, which were previously only accessible via a discovery service, are now discoverable along with other library resources via one access point. The objective of this study is to measure eBook usage over the 2017-2020 period as one means of determining the effect of user access points on eBook usage.

This handbook is a reference tool intended to help authors, scholars, and anyone else provide accurate and standardized quotations from the Quran, both from linguistic and historical perspectives. The first volume of the handbook includes the full text of the Quran using a font mimicking its earliest script, Mashq or Early Kufic, and it is provided in two formats, with and without diacritic vowel marks. The font used to generate the full texts in the first volume, Arabetics Mashq, was designed and implemented by the author after years of in-depth examination of the historical Quranic manuscripts, notably the copy of …

This study investigates the acceptance of digital library system (Digilib system) by students and librarians of the State Islamic University of North Sumatera (UIN Sumatera Utara) Medan. It highlights the system’s rate of acceptance from the perceived usefulness (PU), perceived ease of use (PEOU), behavioural intention to use (IU), and actual system usage (AU). Furthermore, the study investigates the problems in using the system and the users’ strategy in coping with the problems. While libraries have been closed during the pandemic, we have had an increase in demand for our Annual Reports collection. Researchers may be spending more time searching the web or expanding the types of materials to explore in the research process. We've had to re-think how to supply reports that are only available in microfiche or in print storage. It has taken a combined effort to supply the reports. The pandemic has reinforced our desire to make digitized reports more accessible to our users and potentially more discoverable to a wider variety of users.

The discovery layer is commonly used in libraries to provide a more “Google-like” experience that offers one-stop searching. The original selling point of the discovery layer was that journal articles could be retrieved as well as monographs. But as libraries have acquired many other formats, particularly non-print, the discovery layer has struggled to provide results that include these “atypical” resources.

Following the trend of repurposing library space to meet modern user needs, Western University is undergoing a planned revitalization and renovation of its largest library on campus. As a result, 500,000 items will need to be shifted to other locations or off-site storage. In this session we will outline the impact of metadata work in shifting this large collection of material to a shared print preservation storage facility, in coordination with Western University’s Keep@Downsview partnership (https://downsviewkeep.org/). In recent years, commercialization of the results of applied research, especially bioengineering, became a university focus; the number of WSU owned patents increased significantly. Faculty & students ask Research Assistance Desk (RAD) staff about showing videos in class or in group settings. Faculty also asked how to search for videos that had public performance rights. Since this information is in order records and/or buried in licenses RAD staff had to ask acquisitions staff if a specific video had PPR.

The Goals

• Make PPR information readily available
• Make streaming videos with PPR searchable

Many popular websites allow users to assign descriptive metadata to individual resources. Previous studies have analyzed user-created metadata with several comparing it to metadata created by information professionals. This study analyzed Faceted Application of Subject Terminology (FAST) headings and IMDb “plot keywords” for the same documentary films in order to determine how much of the aboutness identified by the former was covered by the latter. A randomized list of documentary films held at the Iowa State University Library, a large academic research library, was created. Records for titles without IMDb headings were excluded from analysis. A significant percentage of those are recordings of performances produced by the now Jacobs School of Music. Clearing Out Backlogs From Home: Remote Cataloging Of Posters, Nicole Smeltekop

In 2019, the Libraries purchased a collection of about 500 leftist political posters. These posters mostly originated from Europe, but the collection has an international scope. We set up a workflow that started with the Conservation department unrolling and flattening the posters, me cataloging them, and lastly, the digitization team creating images for our digital repository. As the only graphics cataloger, the original plan was for me to catalog these by myself and have batches of posters scanned by our digital imaging team as I completed cataloging. However, COVID-related work-from-home orders changed how this could be done.

Archival materials can often be found in cultural heritage organizations that do not have trained special collections catalogers on staff. In this workshop, participants will learn how to catalog manuscripts, photographs, and audiovisual materials so they can be discovered in online catalogs and databases. Both item and collection-level cataloging will be discussed and participants will learn when and how to apply metadata standards like RDA and DACS. Time for hands-on practice will be included.

Using The Harvesting Method To Submit Etds Into Proquest: A Case Study Of A Lesser-Known Approach, Marielle Veve

The following case study describes an academic library’s recent experience implementing the harvesting method to submit electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) into the ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global database (PQDT). In this lesser-known approach, ETDs are deposited first in the institutional repository (IR), where they get processed, to be later harvested for free by ProQuest through the IR’s Open Archives Initiative (OAI) feed. The method provides a series of advantages over some of the alternative methods, including students’ choice to opt-in or out from ProQuest, better control over the embargo restrictions, and more customization power without having to rely on …
