Ishi, Briet's Antelope, And The Documentality Of Human Documents, Martin I. Nord Dec 2020

Ishi, Briet's Antelope, And The Documentality Of Human Documents, Martin I. Nord

Proceedings from the Document Academy

Ishi, the “last wild Indian in North America,” was “discovered” in 1911 and spent the last years of his life living in an anthropology museum. There he was studied by anthropologists and viewed by the public as a living exhibit. In this paper, I take some initial steps in arguing that Ishi, the person, became a document to most people. The similarities between Ishi and Suzanne Briet’s hypothetical antelope, newly discovered and placed in a zoo, are eerie. Ishi, like the antelope, is brought into public knowledge as both an initial document and a wide variety of secondary documents derived …

The Dragonslayer: Folktale Classification, Memetics, And Cataloguing, Alex Mayhew Dec 2020

The Dragonslayer: Folktale Classification, Memetics, And Cataloguing, Alex Mayhew

Proceedings from the Document Academy

Tales of great heroes overcoming great monsters have been a part of storytelling since time immemorial. Some of these tales follow recurring patterns, and one such pattern is that of ‘The Dragonslayer.’ From tales of Tristan and Iseult and Saint George and the Dragon, to the confrontation with the dragon Smaug in The Hobbit, ‘The Dragonslayer’ has been an enduring example of a recurring pattern in storytelling.

Different knowledge organization systems seek to arrange and connect texts and their recurring patterns in different ways. Folklorists look for recurring motifs and some wiki editors look for common tropes in …

Cataloging Manuscripts And Archival Collections, Rebecca A. Wiederhold Nov 2020

Cataloging Manuscripts And Archival Collections, Rebecca A. Wiederhold

Faculty Publications

Catalogers are increasingly responsible for creating metadata for a variety of unusual items. In the Beyond Books: Cataloging Special Format Items preconference at ULA 2019, participants learned how to catalog manuscripts/archival collections, artists’ books, zines, and posters. This webinar will reprise the Manuscripts and Archival Collections segment of that session, educating participants on when it’s appropriate to catalog special collections material archivally as a collection versus on an item level. Whether you have finding aids to use as a base for your catalog record or you are working directly with the materials, guidelines for using DACS and RDA for manuscript …

Converting A Small Online Catalog - Improving Service And Satisfaction, Marilyn Teolis, Priscilla Stephenson, Andrew Brown, Ada Echols

Southern Chapter/Medical Library Association Annual Conference

Converting the online catalog to a cloud-based system. The library’s software-based catalog experienced technical issues whenever the hospital’s Information Technology department performed updates, and remote access to the system was not available. The authors describe the process of successfully converting the online catalog to a cloud-based system with remote access. It was critical for the library staff to preserve data from the former system. The initial step was to download the statistics from the former system to preserve them for future use. While the library staff weeded both the collection and the online records, they checked to ensure the existing …

Increasing Ebook Usage: The Importance Of Investing Time And Money Into Access Points, Carolyn Klatt, Kim Meeks

Southern Chapter/Medical Library Association Annual Conference

OBJECTIVE In January 2020, the Library migrated to a new Library Management System (LMS), Ex Libris Alma and Primo, that combines the functionality of a discovery service and the features of a traditional catalog. The Library’s eBooks, which were previously only accessible via a discovery service, are now discoverable along with other library resources via one access point. The objective of this study is to measure eBook usage over the 2017-2020 period as one means of determining the effect of user access points on eBook usage.

METHODS Counter Book Report 2 (R4) eBook usage statistics from January to August for …

Making Sense Of Online Public Health Debates With Visual Analytics Systems, Anton Ninkov Nov 2020

Making Sense Of Online Public Health Debates With Visual Analytics Systems, Anton Ninkov

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Online debates occur frequently and on a wide variety of topics. Particularly, online debates about various public health topics (e.g., vaccines, statins, cannabis, dieting plans) are prevalent in today’s society. These debates are important because of the real-world implications they can have on public health. Therefore, it is important for public health stakeholders (i.e., those with a vested interest in public health) and the general public to have the ability to make sense of these debates quickly and effectively. This dissertation investigates ways of enabling sense-making of these debates with the use of visual analytics systems (VASes). VASes are computational …

Furthermore, the study investigates the problems in using the system and the users’ strategy in coping with the problems. Data were collected using an online survey from 186 respondents, comprising 26 librarians and 160 students. A quantitative approach was applied using a TAM model to measure …

Corporate Annual Reports: Supply & Demand, Alie Visser, Elizabeth Marshall Oct 2020

Corporate Annual Reports: Supply & Demand, Alie Visser, Elizabeth Marshall

Western Libraries Presentations

While libraries have been closed during the pandemic, we have had an increase in demand for our Annual Reports collection. Researchers may be spending more time searching the web or expanding the types of materials to explore in the research process. We've had to re-think how to supply reports that are only available in microfiche or in print storage. It has taken a combined effort to supply the reports. The pandemic has reinforced our desire to make digitized reports more accessible to our users and potentially more discoverable to a wider variety of users.

Representation Of Atypical Resources In The Discovery Layer: Metadata And Cataloging Aspects, Brian J. Falato Oct 2020

Representation Of Atypical Resources In The Discovery Layer: Metadata And Cataloging Aspects, Brian J. Falato

Charleston Library Conference

The discovery layer is commonly used in libraries to provide a more “Google-like” experience that offers one-stop searching. The original selling point of the discovery layer was that journal articles could be retrieved as well as monographs. But as libraries have acquired many other formats, particularly non-print, the discovery layer has struggled to provide results that include these “atypical” resources.

Metadata is crucial to the discovery layer because it is what is used for the search. The higher the quality of metadata, the better the retrieval results will be. NISO has provided a list of elements to be considered best …

Matching Made In Heaven: Collections And Metadata Collaboration For Print Preservation, Alie Visser, Erin Johnson, Christina Zoricic

Charleston Library Conference

Following the trend of repurposing library space to meet modern user needs, Western University is undergoing a planned revitalization and renovation of its largest library on campus. As a result, 500,000 items will need to be shifted to other locations or off-site storage. In this session we will outline the impact of metadata work in shifting this large collection of material to a shared print preservation storage facility, in coordination with Western University’s Keep@Downsview partnership (https://downsviewkeep.org/). Keep@Downsview is a partnership of five universities to preserve the scholarly record in Ontario in a shared, high-density storage and preservation facility.

We will …

Six Impossible Things: Moving Kbart Into The Next Decade, Andrée Rathemacher, Robert Heaton, Noah Levin, Christine Stohn

Charleston Library Conference

KBART is one of the most successful NISO recommendations today. Formally supported by over 80 organizations across all stakeholder groups, it enables a standardized transfer of data between content providers and knowledge bases. Most recently KBART added an automated process to transfer holdings data to localize an institution’s knowledge base holdings. While KBART was originally built to focus on journal and book data, the world has moved on—the different flavors and nuances of open access, the increased use of audiovisual material, holdings at the chapter and article levels, and issues around translations, transliterations, and author names are just some of …

Promoting University Inventors: Patent Collection In Shocker Open Access Repository, Susan J. Matveyeva Dr., Samantha Henning

Kansas Library Association College and University Libraries Section Proceedings

Wichita State University is known for its advances in STEM research for many decades, but there were few inventions patented by WSU. In recent years, commercialization of the results of applied research, especially bioengineering, became a university focus; the number of WSU owned patents increased significantly. WSU initiated several initiatives to support university inventors. These included the development of the Innovation Campus and WSU Venture. The Wichita State University Libraries decided to join these efforts by not only providing information to inventors as a Patent and Trademark Resource Center but to archive and increase awareness of their patents. To increase …

Can I Show This Video?: Making Public Performance Rights Visible To Patrons, Lynn E. Gates

OLAC Conferences

The Problem

Faculty & students ask Research Assistance Desk (RAD) staff about showing videos in class or in group settings. Faculty also asked how to search for videos that had public performance rights. Since this information is in order records and/or buried in licenses RAD staff had to ask acquisitions staff if a specific video had PPR.

The Goals

  • Make PPR information readily available
  • Make streaming videos with PPR searchable

Perceptions On Aboutness Of Documentary Films: Comparing Fast Headings To User-Created Imdb "Plot Keywords", Christopher S. Dieckman Oct 2020

Perceptions On Aboutness Of Documentary Films: Comparing Fast Headings To User-Created Imdb "Plot Keywords", Christopher S. Dieckman

OLAC Conferences

Many popular websites allow users to assign descriptive metadata to individual resources. Previous studies have analyzed user-created metadata with several comparing it to metadata created by information professionals. This study analyzed Faceted Application of Subject Terminology (FAST) headings and IMDb “plot keywords” for the same documentary films in order to determine how much of the aboutness identified by the former was covered by the latter. A randomized list of documentary films held at the Iowa State University Library, a large academic research library, was created. Records for titles without IMDb headings were excluded from analysis. The FAST headings were compared …

Exposing Institutional Content: Preserving Legacies And Breaking Rules, Michelle Hahn

OLAC Conferences

Indiana University recently engaged in an initiative to digitize and preserve hundreds of thousands of recording from all over the University. A significant percentage of those are recordings of performances produced by the now Jacobs School of Music. These performances feature some big names in music and the initiative spurred from 20 years of efforts to digitize and preserve recordings in volatile formats for music collections at Indiana University. My poster focuses on our efforts to make those performance recordings more discoverable in both their physical and digital surrogate formats and get all the necessary metadata to all the right …

Clearing Out Backlogs From Home: Remote Cataloging Of Posters, Nicole Smeltekop Oct 2020

Clearing Out Backlogs From Home: Remote Cataloging Of Posters, Nicole Smeltekop

OLAC Conferences

In 2019, the Libraries purchased a collection of about 500 leftist political posters. These posters mostly originated from Europe, but the collection has an international scope. We set up a workflow that started with the Conservation department unrolling and flattening the posters, me cataloging them, and lastly, the digitization team creating images for our digital repository. As the only graphics cataloger, the original plan was for me to catalog these by myself and have batches of posters scanned by our digital imaging team as I completed cataloging. However, COVID-related work-from-home orders changed how this could be done.

Human history is full of many bitter examples of natural calamities which affected mankind with heavy losses. The COVID-19 pandemic is one of the most disastrous calamities which momentously impacted every sphere of life, especially, higher education and the use of academic libraries. This pandemic instigated the worldwide subsequent lockdown policies imposed by various governments. These policies badly devastated the physical use of the academic libraries. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the faculty and students who are reliant on the physical use of libraries have badly suffered. This temporary postponement of the in-person operation of libraries has opened up new challenges …

In this workshop, participants will learn how to catalog manuscripts, photographs, and audiovisual materials so they can be discovered in online catalogs and databases. Both item and collection-level cataloging will be discussed and participants will learn when and how to apply metadata standards like RDA and DACS. Time for hands-on practice will be included.

Using The Harvesting Method To Submit Etds Into Proquest: A Case Study Of A Lesser-Known Approach, Marielle Veve Sep 2020

Using The Harvesting Method To Submit Etds Into Proquest: A Case Study Of A Lesser-Known Approach, Marielle Veve

Library Faculty Presentations & Publications

The following case study describes an academic library’s recent experience implementing the harvesting method to submit electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) into the ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global database (PQDT). In this lesser-known approach, ETDs are deposited first in the institutional repository (IR), where they get processed, to be later harvested for free by ProQuest through the IR’s Open Archives Initiative (OAI) feed. The method provides a series of advantages over some of the alternative methods, including students’ choice to opt-in or out from ProQuest, better control over the embargo restrictions, and more customization power without having to rely on …
