Linked Data Demystified: Practical Efforts To Transform Contentdm Metadata For The Linked Data Cloud, Silvia B. Southwick, Cory K. Lampert

Library Faculty Presentations

The library literature and events like the ALA Annual Conference have been inundated with presentations and articles on linked data. At UNLV Libraries, we understand the importance of linked data in helping to better service our users. We have designed and initiated a pilot project to apply linked data concepts to the practical task of transforming a sample set of our CONTENTdm digital collections data into future-oriented linked data. This presentation will outline rationale for beginning work in linked data and detail the phases we will undertake in the proof of concept project. We hope through this research experiment to …

Building Collections In Irs From External Data Sources, Sai Deng, Susan Matveyeva Oct 2012

Building Collections In Irs From External Data Sources, Sai Deng, Susan Matveyeva

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This presentation will address the experiments of building research publication collections from external data sources such as PubMed, IEEE Xplore and Web of Science in the DSpace based institutional repository (IR). To get data from other sources is an alternative way to develop collections for different disciplines since author self-deposit has not become a common practice for institutional repositories. This is also an effort in line with the current metadata cataloging trend of moving from item by item cataloging to batch processing of metadata, repurposing of metadata between different systems and communities, and providing value-added data services to students and …

Video Language Coding: Best Practices, Kelley Mcgrath, Cindy Badilla-Melendez, Susan Leister, Katia Strieck, Carolyn Walden, Karen Gorss Benko, Irina Stanishevskaya

OLAC Publications and Training Materials

The 2006-2007 task force was charged with creating a set of best practices for coding MARC 008/lang and 041 language information for videos, especially DVDs, and with using that exercise to examine whether any changes could be made to the MARC21 format (coding or directions) that would improve access to the multiple types of language information found on videos. The work of that task force resulted in a number of changes to the MARC format, which are described in appendix 1. This current document, completed by the 2012 task force, provides guidance for coding video language information using the current …

Blogging the Library

The way I have unified the LGBTQ titles—all 700-odd of them—is by using a local information field in the catalog. Quick cataloging lesson for you non-librarians: when I talk about subject headings, for example Gay Culture, those go in a field designated by the number 650. This means that it’s a universal, standardized field and that the headings in those fields will be recognized anywhere. For local subject headings, those that are only used within one library (ours, in this case), the field is designated by the number 690. I’m using one of those 690 fields with the heading “LGBTQ …

Visualizing Linked Data, F. Tim Knight Jul 2012

Visualizing Linked Data, F. Tim Knight

Librarian Publications & Presentations

Provides an introduction to linked data considering ways to visualize and get a better understanding of this relatively new concept. Linked data is a different way for our bibliographic data to interact with the data available on the Web.. It will hopefully enhance the information we already provide, make it easier for us to provide that information and allow libraries to integrate themselves better with other information sources on the web.

Comparative User Experiences Of Next-Generation Catalogue Interfaces, Rice Majors Jul 2012

Comparative User Experiences Of Next-Generation Catalogue Interfaces, Rice Majors

Staff publications, research, and presentations

One of the presumed advantages of next-generation library catalogue interfaces is that the user experience is improved—that it is both richer and more intuitive. Often the interfaces come with little or no user-facing documentation or imbedded “help” for patrons based on an assumption of ease of use and familiarity of the experience, having followed best practices in use on the Web. While there has been much gray literature (published on library Web sites, etc.) interrogating these implicit claims and contrasting the new interfaces to traditional Web-based catalogues, this article details a consistent and formal comparison of whether users can actually …

Standardization Of Questions In Rare Disease Registries: The Prism Library Project, Rachel L. Richesson, Denise Shereff, James E. Andrews Jul 2012

Standardization Of Questions In Rare Disease Registries: The Prism Library Project, Rachel L. Richesson, Denise Shereff, James E. Andrews

School of Information Faculty Publications

Background: Patient registries are often a helpful first step in estimating the impact and understanding the etiology of rare diseases - both requisites for the development of new diagnostics and therapeutics. The value and utility of patient registries rely on the use of both well-constructed structured research questions and relevant answer sets accompanying them. There are currently no clear standards or specifications for developing registry questions, and there are no banks of existing questions to support registry developers.

Objective: This paper introduces the [Rare Disease] PRISM (Patient Registry Item Specifications and Metadata for Rare Disease) project, a library of standardized …

Preservation And Access In An Age Of E-Science And Electronic Records: Sharing The Problem And Discovering Common Solutions, Claire Stewart

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

As academic libraries grapple with the challenge of preserving their own digitized special collections, intensification of interest in preserving other electronic content may present opportunities to collaborate with organizations on campus. This article offers a brief introduction to some of the core issues in digital preservation and suggests an orientation to the problems that can be helpful in thinking about how to join forces with others on campus.

Metadata For Digital Libraries, Eleta Exline

University Library Scholarship

The students in this course were developing a digital library of Native American artifacts. As a guest lecturer I discussed the concept of metadata using a hands-on exercise and gave an overview of the Dublin Core elements. While I co-presented with Sherry Vellucci, this document contains only my portion of the presentation.

Delivered to Indigenous New England (ENGL 740), University of New Hampshire. March 20, 2012

Blogging the Library

So it's been a while since my last post. I'll just clue you in as to what I've been doing the past two weeks. I did some score cataloging for Lina. Cataloging is so complex, but I feel like when you remember all the steps and repeat them, it becomes less foreign. It's also a challenge to finish all the work because it is overwhelming going through records and trying to find the perfect one for our library. Some records have wrong editions or dates... there's a lot of work that goes into what the average student sees on their …

Map Displays And Exhibits, Katherine Rankin Mar 2012

Map Displays And Exhibits, Katherine Rankin

Library Faculty Publications

Many patrons do not even know libraries have map collections, let alone what kinds of maps are in them or how they could use those maps. Map displays and exhibits can help increase interest in map collections. Muriel Strickland wrote an article on casual map displays with the title "Map Displays: a Means of Promoting Map Use" in volume 17, number 3 of the WAML IB (June 1986). One of the purposes of my writing this article is to reprise some of the valuable information in Muriel's article; because it was published so long ago, many of the present WAmL …

Blogging the Library

This is my fourth week on the job now as music librarian intern at Musselman Library, and I've learned a lot so far. I've been given quite a bit of reading (I had forgotten that librarians were into that), including the funny title So You Want to Be a Librarian but it's all been very informative and helpful. Providing Access To E-Audiobooks: Help From The Non-Cataloger, Eva Sorrell Feb 2012

Providing Access To E-Audiobooks: Help From The Non-Cataloger, Eva Sorrell

Library Faculty Publications & Presentations

There are a growing number of Web sites that offer free e-audiobooks. Providing access to these e-audiobooks can be a challenge for libraries, particularly with shrinking budgets and staff. The author describes a process created at California State University, San Bernardino to re-record and catalog currently popular public domain e-audiobooks with a goal of making the cataloging simple enough that a non-cataloger can perform the task.
