Winds Of Change – Predicting Water-Based Recreationists' Support And Opposition For Offshore Wind Energy Development In The Great Lakes, Michael D. Ferguson, Samantha L. Powers, Nate E. Trauntvein, Jeffrey B. Jacquet, Alan R. Graefe, Andrew J. Mowen

This study examined the factors influencing water-based recreationists' perceptions of support and opposition towards off-shore wind energy development (OWD) on Lake Erie. Much of the proposed or future Lake Erie OWD infrastructure may either be within or adjacent to public lands, waters, and protected areas, raising concerns about the potential environmental and social impacts upon recreation stakeholders. The limited body of OWD research within the United States has suggested there are numerous factors that may influence overall perceptions of support and opposition such as political orientation and beliefs in climate change. Moreover, recent research has proposed that the perceived recreation …

Motivations And Satisfaction Of North Dakota Deer Hunters During A Temporal Decline In Deer Populations, Kristen E. Black, William F. Jensen, Robert Newman, Jason R. Boulanger Jan 2018

Motivations And Satisfaction Of North Dakota Deer Hunters During A Temporal Decline In Deer Populations, Kristen E. Black, William F. Jensen, Robert Newman, Jason R. Boulanger

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Achieving state wildlife agency biological goals for deer (Odocoileus spp.) management may often conflict with hunter desires. Concomitantly, better information is needed to optimize agency deer herd management goals with hunters’ social goals. In 2016, we surveyed 3,000 North Dakota, USA, resident deer hunters using a self-administered mail survey to gain a better understanding of motivations, satisfaction, and hunter demographics that may be used to inform hunter recruitment and retention (HRR) efforts during a period of reduced statewide deer populations. With deer-gun license availability strictly limited, we explored the possibility that some gun hunters may have been engaging …

Interaction With Water: Water-Based Outdoor Recreation And Water Quality Perception And Concern Among Residents Of Utah, Matthew J. Barnett May 2016

Interaction With Water: Water-Based Outdoor Recreation And Water Quality Perception And Concern Among Residents Of Utah, Matthew J. Barnett

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

There are a large number of impaired water bodies in Utah, and population trends indicate that water quality impairment will become an increasingly important issue in the future. Because of education and management implications, an understanding of the social processes that drive water quality perception and concern is a matter of interest and importance. Sociodemographic characteristics and outdoor recreational activity have both been associated with environmental concern in the past. Using a Generalized Linear Modeling approach, this study explores the relationship between water-based outdoor recreation and water quality perception and concern. It is found that participation in water-based outdoor recreation …

Visitor Experience And Social Science Indicators Of Nps-Alaska Coastal Resources Nps Nrtr Report, K. Goonan, Christopher Monz, L. Philips Nov 2013

Visitor Experience And Social Science Indicators Of Nps-Alaska Coastal Resources Nps Nrtr Report, K. Goonan, Christopher Monz, L. Philips

Christopher Monz

This report describes a program of research designed to identify indicators of quality and formulate associated standards of quality for social and recreation resource conditions for the coastal backcountry of Kenai Fjords National Park (KEFJ). It includes a summary of results from two backcountry visitor surveys, as well as a discussion integrating these data with information from an ongoing backcountry campsite monitoring effort. Information in this report can help park managers to: • Identify indicators of quality for social and biophysical aspects of the visitor experience • Develop management objectives related to the backcountry visitor experience and conditions of related …

Quantified Recess: Design Of An Activity For Elementary Students Involving Analyses Of Their Own Movement Data, Victor R. Lee, Joel R. Drake Jul 2013

Quantified Recess: Design Of An Activity For Elementary Students Involving Analyses Of Their Own Movement Data, Victor R. Lee, Joel R. Drake

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

Recess is often a time for children in school to engage recreationally in physically demanding and highly interactive activities with their peers. This paper describes a design effort to encourage fifth-grade students to examine sensitivities associated with different measures of center by having them analyze activities during recess using over the course of a week using Fitbit activity trackers and TinkerPlots data visualization software. We describe the activity structure some observed student behaviors during the activity. We also provide a descriptive account, based on video records and transcripts, of two students who engaged thoughtfully with their recess data and developed …

Integrative Ability As It Relates To Problem Solving Strategies: A Study Of Possible Factors Affecting And Affected By This Ability, Ann King May 1979

Integrative Ability As It Relates To Problem Solving Strategies: A Study Of Possible Factors Affecting And Affected By This Ability, Ann King

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Individuals within the United States Forest Service, the National Park Service, the Bureau of Land Management, and state park systems were studied to determine their integrative orientation (general problem solving strategies). This orientation involves a preference for trying new ideas, working within a long time frame, generalizing in planning or managing, taking risks, working in close association with others, examining many aspects of a problem, working on difficult problems, developing a variety of skills, and working on problems requiring continual revision. An attempt was made to relate this orientation to education, major field of study, agency, time, tasks, level in …

An Investigation Into The Impact Of Outdoor Recreation On Water Quality, Michael L. Young May 1975

An Investigation Into The Impact Of Outdoor Recreation On Water Quality, Michael L. Young

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This thesis was undertaken in order to explore aspects of the impact of outdoor recreation on water quality. It begins with a discussion of the rationale for monitoring and controlling such environmental degradation. Following sections include an investigation of water quality characteristics particularly indicative of recreational impact, a discussion of the potential contributions of various recreation activities to water pollution, a literature survey, a guideline for planning and implementing a water quality surveillance program, and recommendations for further research. Material for the thesis came from library research and was augmented by the author's personal experience as a water quality research …
