Mapping And Analyzing Historical Sanborn Maps Of San Luis Obispo From 1905 And 1950, Troy A. Lawson
Social Sciences
This project was conducted to map, analyze, and determine historical changes in the city of San Luis Obispo, California. Sanborn maps from 1905 and 1950 were drawn showing streets, parcels, creeks, and buildings of the city. These publications had limited use because they were in a physical format without any geographic reference. Here, these maps were digitized into a GIS format to analyze building trends and identify cultural and historical buildings not on the City’s list of Historic and Culturally Contributing Buildings, as well as published online on the City of San Luis Obispo’s website and on ArcGIS Online. Additionally, …

Tourism is an important industry throughout the world, not only does tourism create an influx of visitors to a certain destination, but it also creates millions of jobs around the world. Ever since China's opening reveal to the world in 1978, the tourism industry has increased and is a thriving business throughout the country. With the growing middle class of the Chinese population and their disposable incomes, tourism has increased not only internationally, but also domestically. More specifically, Shanghai has been a booming city with the recent renovation of Pudong, improvements in infrastructure for upscale accommodations, and the hosting of …
The Impact Of Westernization On The Fijian Birth Model, Sophia Heick
The Impact Of Westernization On The Fijian Birth Model, Sophia Heick
Social Sciences
Over the past 200 years a dramatic shift in the method of birth has occurred in the world and especially in the United States. Birth has been transformed from a common event overseen by a local midwife, a process that was common and largely mysterious as it lacked any scientific understanding, to an infrequent event overwhelmingly overseen by obstetricians and scientifically dissected in attempts to maximize health outcomes. Although many countries have gone through a transition similar to this, this specific transition is unique to the culture of the United States. With the impact that US Western culture is having …
Geographical Spread Of Asians In California, Lydia Tang
Geographical Spread Of Asians In California, Lydia Tang
Social Sciences
The goal of my senior project is to perform a spatial analysis of Asian American settlement patterns within California. With my findings, I want to predict future Asian immigrant settlement patterns, places within California that they will likely cluster around, the rate of immigration, and how their increasing or decreasing presence in California affects California’s urban and economic climate. What I hope to achieve from this study is an understanding for why certain areas attract more Asians than others. By finding the answers to the following questions, I will be able to forecast the future spread of Asian Americans in …

Rape As A Weapon Of War In The Democratic Republic Of The Congo, Carly Brown
Rape As A Weapon Of War In The Democratic Republic Of The Congo, Carly Brown
Social Sciences
The Democratic Republic of the Congo has been appropriately acknowledged as "the rape capital of the world." While the country has been trapped in conflict, the use of rape as a weapon of war has been rampant and unyielding. The sexual violence inflicted upon women has been nothing less than brutal and destructive, physically, socially, and psychologically. This paper analyzes the use of rape as a weapon of war in the Congo, taking into context the ongoing war, cultural and social situations that facilitate its existence, and the many consequences the victims are forced to endure.

Global Demographic Challenges: Case Study Women, Madeline Fox
Social Sciences
Half of the world lives on less than $2 a day. Everywhere men, women and children live in extreme poverty and suffer. Anthropogenic climate change has intensified famines, droughts, floods, hurricanes and other natural disasters. Modern civilization has altered nature and nature has responded to these alterations. Every year approximately 80 million people are added to the
planet, increasing pressure on the land. These added numbers of people require increased food and land resources and produce more pollution. While populations grow, arable lands with high yields do not. It is essential to reduce global consumption of all commodities and reduce …

Learning Sustainable Development: Chimeneas De La Esperanza, Miriam V. Mollan Gundersen
Social Sciences
Social inequality and environmental degradation are motivating informed young people into action and connecting impoverished regions of the world with students in more developed nations. This Social Sciences senior project is to analyze an alternative development model designed by a group of Californian university students. The project, named Chimeneas de la Esperanza, is designed to help impoverished Nicaraguan women start a ceramics business. The major hurdle of this mission is to establish a market for the ceramics product. Energy efficient ceramic stoves and smoke ventilating chimneys would benefit the community and avoid an impacted crafts market. The project encompasses ideas …

The Driving Forces And Resultant Effects Of Global Food Crises: Development Reconsidered In A Time Of Need, Quinn Lewis
Social Sciences
A number of factors led up to the global food crisis of 2008, culminating in the latest spike in worldwide hunger levels. Such a crisis needs to be understood from a structural perspective; relevant information must be taken into account to design adequate responses, and certain mechanisms need to be put in place to bolster the most vulnerable groups from the terrible scourge of hunger. This paper examines the latest global food crisis, looking at the problem from a number of angles: supply-and-demand forces, socio-economic factors, and the effects of international trade policies on global hunger levels. Hunger is a …

This paper analyzes religion using a multi-disciplinary approach. Studying the Social Sciences exposes one to an opportunity not just to learn a single discipline, but three, and this unique learning experience can teach one to look at the world’s phenomena with a multi-perspective view. Using a tri-disciplinary approach when exploring topics can broaden ones outlook on how there are many ways to explore and investigate a topic in greater detail. By using Anthropological, Sociological and Geographical theoretical perspectives one can understand a topic more fully by using a multi-perspective approach when exploring this diverse world culturally, socially and physically.
