Capitalism In Europe Vs. Latin America, Brandy Mace, Lucas E. Mainhart, Caleb Edwards, Dayton Lamb, Jesus Herrera-Herrera
ATU Research Symposium
Focusing on the years 1995 to 2023, what are the universal traits of capitalism versus the more varying or flexible traits, as demonstrated by comparing European and Latin American practices of capitalism. For the country comparisons, researchers have agreed on 3 common variables to evaluate the capitalist practices of a Latin American country with a European one. These shared variables are 1) The power of the country's currency, 2) The informal versus formal employment of the labor force, as well as unemployment rate, and 3) The income gap between the rich and poor. Each researcher will also include 1-3 additional …

The Relationship Between Labor Market Institutions And Innovation In 177 European Regions Over The Period 2000-2015, Gaetano Perone
CBER Conference
The main goal of this paper was to investigate the relationship between a set of labor market institutions (LMIs) and innovation (proxied by patent density) in 174 NUT-1 and NUT-2 European regions, over the period 2000-2015. Fixed effects with Driscoll and Kraay's (1998) standard errors (FE-DK), ordinary least squares (OLS), the generalized method of moments estimation of the fixed effects (FE-GMM), and a multilevel model (MLM) were employed.
America Without A Minimum Wage: Why The Federal Minimum Wage Should Be Abolished, Zachary Cary
America Without A Minimum Wage: Why The Federal Minimum Wage Should Be Abolished, Zachary Cary
Helm's School of Government Conference - American Revival: Citizenship & Virtue
Minimum wage policy may be the greatest economic policy issue where the common man has a strong opinion. Nearly every person has a view of how minimum wage policy should be enacted, whether it be in raising the federal minimum wage, changing the scope of authority in the federal government, or another policy. However, in discussing any kind of policy, the key details of the policy must be discussed in the framework of both how it would be affected and how it would impact its stakeholders. In this policy analysis, the Iron Triangle of Public Policy – the key executive …
Analysis Of The Emerging Pilot Workforce, James Birdsong, Kurt Reesman
Analysis Of The Emerging Pilot Workforce, James Birdsong, Kurt Reesman
National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)
The pilot workforce grew by approximately 20,000 pilots between 2011 – 2019 before shedding almost 6,500 jobs in 2020 due to COVID-19. Long-term forecasts predict industry recovery and growth and the need for robust pilot hiring since approximately 50% of today’s pilot workforce will meet the mandatory retirement age within 15 years.
The current workforce consists of four generations, with the youngest (Generation Z) just beginning to join the airline ranks. The oldest generation (Baby Boomers) will be exiting the workforce within ten years, leaving three generations (Generations X, Y, and Z), two of which have spent their entire lives …
Child Cognitive Achievement Gaps: The Role Of Family Structure And Maternal Locus Of Control In Parental Investment, Nalinda K. Murray
Child Cognitive Achievement Gaps: The Role Of Family Structure And Maternal Locus Of Control In Parental Investment, Nalinda K. Murray
Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference
Little exploration has been done to determine the impact of family structure on parental investment decisions and how gaps in children’s cognitive achievement are affected in turn. To examine the role of family structure, this paper estimates the production function for children’s cognitive achievement using a value-added specification with instrumental variables estimation. A novel feature of this research is that variation in family structure and maternal locus of control are exploited in an effort to account for the endogeneity of parental investment and children’s cognitive performance. Applying my methodology to data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 and …

Future And Value: The Library As Strategic Partner, Antje Mays
Future And Value: The Library As Strategic Partner, Antje Mays
Charleston Library Conference
Broader economic trends spawn budget pressures for education and libraries, prompting a plethora of studies on the value and relevance of libraries. Numerous reports on economic decline in libraries and studies with mixed pronouncements on the value of libraries have led to a negative self-image within the library profession. Yet libraries’ leadership in connecting learners to knowledge is at the heart of producing many of the key skills sorely needed in robust societies and economies. Librarianship has many untapped opportunities for positioning itself as a prominent strategic partner. This paper outlines current research on the economic and societal context for …

Human Rights And Economic Democracy: Reinvigorating The Human Rights Movement, Curtis T. Kline
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
A 2018 report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concluded that in order to avoid a seemingly inevitable ecological collapse that would bring intense suffering especially on the most marginalized and excluded sectors; the world needs to develop “rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society”. There are many local experiences which demonstrate the possibilities of achieving these needed changes. There are a number of community organizations and associations, social movements, and municipal efforts, among others, with creative visions on this front. In Jackson, Mississippi, for example, Cooperation Jackson strives to be a means …
The Critical Need For Mental Health Education To Be Mandated In New Mexico's Public Schools, Bonnie L. Murphy
The Critical Need For Mental Health Education To Be Mandated In New Mexico's Public Schools, Bonnie L. Murphy
Shared Knowledge Conference
Based on a review of research and best practices in mental health awareness and skills, this inquiry project argues for state legislative policies that would require mental health awareness and skills in the K-12 curriculum. Mental health affects individual accomplishments in every stage of people’s lives beginning in early childhood and throughout the life cycle. Prevention and treatment of mental illness plays a key role in the ability of an individual to cope with loss and develop resiliency and perseverance in challenging times and to make better decisions that improve the individual’s life and the lives of those around them. …

Blade Runner And The Divine Menace, Alexander W. Pickens
Blade Runner And The Divine Menace, Alexander W. Pickens
MAD-RUSH Undergraduate Research Conference
Following the decline of Christianity in mainstream Western culture, a void rose in the moral and societal code. Those writers that emerged presented alternate visions that worked their way into the literature of the 20th century. Karl Marx's interpretation of the structure of labor in capitalism presented a new societal hierarchy whose finer points have been worked out in the complex film Blade Runner. This dystopian nightmare, in which a Marxist interpretation of current society bogged down by the ennui of capitalist accumulation is confronted, describes a new religious order based upon this economic theory. Central to this reimagining …

P29. Basic Skills Or Major-Specific Knowledge? Sources Of Wage Penalties For Working Outside The Major Field Of Study, Yuki Onozuka
P29. Basic Skills Or Major-Specific Knowledge? Sources Of Wage Penalties For Working Outside The Major Field Of Study, Yuki Onozuka
Western Research Forum
Background: This paper examines the sources of wage penalties for working outside the major field of study. Recent research shows that workers in a job unrelated to their major field of study experience significantly lower wages than those in a related job. A substantial amount of human capital may be underutilized. Identifying the sources of the wage penalty is important in terms of how to decrease the inefficient use of human capital, students' college major choice, and type of human capital accumulated in college.
Methods: I use the 1993 National Survey of College Graduates and the O*NET to divide the …

The Social Cost Of Labor And Its Importance For Labor Economics, Robert E. Prasch
The Social Cost Of Labor And Its Importance For Labor Economics, Robert E. Prasch
Social Cost Workshop
The starting point and core notion of neoclassical or mainstream economics is a reductionist vision of the exchange of commodities. Missing is the historical, social, and legal environments within which exchanges occur. A parallel and equally problematic notion is that labor exists as something of a “found object.” By contrast, the classical school of economists understood that laborers must earn a wage equal to or greater than “subsistence” if society was to be an ongoing enterprise. Laborers must be fed, sheltered, socialized, and educated before they arrive in the labor market. This, in a phrase, is the Social Cost of …

Identifying And Responding To Skills Shortages, David L. Passmore
Identifying And Responding To Skills Shortages, David L. Passmore
International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference
Skills shortages limit economic growth. Tight labor markets in the United States have highlighted for policy–makers the problems that skills shortages create for the economy. Yet, it is difficult to document and respond to skills shortages. No single, direct measure identifies a skills shortage. Identification requires multiple economic indicators. When skills shortages are identified, prescription of responses to alleviate shortages is equally problematic. Selection of investment in training as one response requires that other factors affecting labor supply and price must be ruled out as contributing causes of shortages.
Mining Labour Market Information For Use In Developing An It Manpower Predictive Model, Gar-Yun Garry Suen
Mining Labour Market Information For Use In Developing An It Manpower Predictive Model, Gar-Yun Garry Suen
International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference
To improve the information content of the data and to empower knowledge workers of today and tomorrow, the latest “hot” technologies that have emerged on the client/server arena are focused on filtering unnecessary data and presenting the valuable information in a user-friendly, intuitive, and easy to understand way. One of these technologies is data mining. This paper will highlight the significant of discovering meaningful new correlations, patterns, and trends by digging into (mining) large amounts of labour market information (LMI) stored in databases, using artificial-intelligence (AI) and statistical and mathematical techniques. For experimental purpose, a manpower predictive model will be …

Adapting The System Of Continuing Vocational Education For The 3rd Industrial Revolution: Experiences From The Swedish Pilot Project With Ave, Mats Lindell
International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference
This paper analyses problems associated with adapting the system of continuing vocational education (CVT) to the rapidly changing Swedish labour market. The key question asked in the paper is how CVT is going to adapt to a labour market characterised by a growing ITeconomy. The paper also presents empirical data from the pilot project in Sweden called Advanced Vocational Education. AVE is a new form of post-secondary education designed to meet changing technology and skill requirements. The paper concludes that AVE is a step in the right direction in decreasing the gap between demand and supply.
