Development Of Spiritual Competency In Counseling: A Pilot Research Study Of Graduate Students At End Of Training, Rebecca Dawn Hill
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Researchers suggested religious practice and spirituality are multicultural or diversity counseling competencies. Professionals who treat religious and spiritual concerns are sought by a majority of clients. Religious and spiritual training is critical for the ethical treatment of the client, a part of developmental wellness and integrated holistic health theories, and also vital to optimum physical and mental health development. Yet, spiritual and religious competencies are often neglected in graduate studies, leaving counselors fearful and inadequately trained to address spiritual and religious concerns with clients. The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) requires training in graduate education …

Military Mothers Serving As Command/Sergeant Majors In The Army: A Heuristic Phenomenological Inquiry, Yvette Kennedy
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
There are significant changes to women's rights to employment that create opportunities to earn higher leadership positions. The number of women entering the military in low to mid-level rank has increased over the last few years. However, the proportion of women reaching senior leadership position all the way through to the highest enlisted rank of Sergeant Major remain comparatively small. This qualitative study examines the experiences of military mothers who are Sergeants Major in the Army and the personal attributes, factors of resilience, and strategies that promote well-being—by highlighting the key factors reported that were crucial to their success supporting …

The Relationship Between Parental Stress And Externalizing Behavior: The Mediating Role Of Family Functioning On Ethnically Diverse Families In Multisystemic Therapy, Jennifer D. Vinces-Cua
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Parental stress is an expected phenomenon during the parenting of an adolescent. Higher levels of parental stress are associated with an adolescent with externalizing behavior. Parents are instrumental in the development of adolescents and are critical agents of change with youth problematic behavior. Family functioning is often determined in part by a parent’s ability to adequately respond and manage their adolescent’s behavior and their environment. Focusing on improving family relations has been known to positively impact both parent and adolescent. Multisystemic therapy is a well-known treatment for adolescent externalizing behavior and families of diverse ethnicities. Additional attention and resources examining …

The Black Ceiling: The Underrepresentation Of African American Females In The Ces Professorate, Sharon Vanessa Lewis
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This qualitative phenomenological study highlighted the lived experiences of six African American female professors in the counseling education and supervision professorate. The professors were faculty within universities across the United States in the mid-Atlantic, southern, and midwestern regions. This study obtained data from semi-structured interviews as well as photovoice submissions from the interview participants in order to identify experiences which facilitated their persistence in the professorate and overcoming internal and external barriers. The research problem was the underrepresentation of African American females within the counseling education and supervision professorate, which further facilitates minority students’ attrition and underrepresentation. A thematic analysis …

The Emdr Integrative Group Treatment Protocol For Ongoing Traumatic Stress With Female Survivors Of Child Marriage, Trafficking, And Exploitation In Dhaka, Bangladesh, Sarah Frances Walsh
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This study implements a pilot project investigating the effectiveness of providing the EMDR integrative group treatment protocol adapted for ongoing traumatic stress (EMDR- IGTP-OTS) to females in Dhaka, Bangladesh (and the surrounding areas) who have survived early marriage and sexual exploitation. The aim of the study is to reduce the PTSD symptoms of these women as measured by the Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scales (HADS-Anxiety & HADS-Depression). This study analyzes archival data gathered by Scaling UP EMDR. Few studies exist testing actual interventions to help the population of women or using EMDR-IGTP-OTS with …

What Are The Patterns Of Shared Viewpoints, Attitudes, Beliefs, And Opinions Of Full-Time Grandparent Caregivers About Their Experiences? A Q Methodological Study, Korrin Denee Kim
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Objective: Millions of grandparents in the United States provide full-time care to grandchildren. Although their actions are largely altruistic, they do not come without sacrifice. Often these sacrifices are associated with major consequences. Little is known about how grandparents prioritize their sacrifices. An improved understanding of how grandparents prioritize their sacrifices could facilitate better awareness, more specialized care, and improved policies for this population. Method: I used Q methodology to investigate grandparents’ perspectives on the sacrifices that they make to raise their grandchildren. Thirteen participants were recruited using snowball and purposive sampling. To create the Q-set, I used 26 statements …
The Impact Prayer Has On Reducing Anxiety, Casey D. Groover
The Impact Prayer Has On Reducing Anxiety, Casey D. Groover
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Anxiety predates the modern world as its history is biblical. Christians have traditionally battled the conditions of anxiety, and it currently adversely impacts people in various ways today. A process used to reduce the effect of anxiety is prayer, and Christians among the Church of God denomination practice its rituals so that God will provide for their requests. This Christian prayer is experienced through different prayer rituals as God recognizes and responds to Christians using them. The results of prayers when experiencing reactions to anxiety are reported in the testimonies of ten research participants who provided three significant themes in …
Developing The Refined Sexual Shame Inventory: Validation Study Of The Kyle Inventory Of Sexual Shame, Jang Soon Lim
Developing The Refined Sexual Shame Inventory: Validation Study Of The Kyle Inventory Of Sexual Shame, Jang Soon Lim
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
There has been an increase in a need to provide appropriate assessments and treatments for sexual shame associated with pornography use, a dysfunctional result of the development of the Internet and social network services. There is no clinically validated inventory of sexual shame in the literature, while many active studies of shame have recently produced meaningful results. This study aimed to develop a brief measure of sexual shame based on the Kyle Inventory of Sexual Shame (KISS) that has not truly been validated with multiple samples. The KISS is comprised of some items confound cause and effect rather than assess …
Integrating Multicultural Discussions In Counseling Supervision: A Grounded Theory Study, Zoricelis Davila
Integrating Multicultural Discussions In Counseling Supervision: A Grounded Theory Study, Zoricelis Davila
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
There is sufficient evidence that supports the ethical responsibility supervisors have to facilitate multicultural discussions through the integration of cultural topics in the supervisory session. Unfortunately, it is reported that supervisors who feel inadequate addressing cultural issues tend to ignore and not integrate such discussions. This lack of competence leads to the frustration and dissatisfaction of supervisees, which in turn impacts counseling practice. A dearth of information exists about the process that counseling supervisors follow to integrate multicultural topics in supervision. Further, there is limited evidence about the action and interaction between the supervisor and supervisee leading to the integration …

When Professional And Personal Values Collide: A Thematic Analysis Of Counseling Students' Developmental Journey Through An Ethics Course, Patricia Kimball
When Professional And Personal Values Collide: A Thematic Analysis Of Counseling Students' Developmental Journey Through An Ethics Course, Patricia Kimball
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Ethical practice is a foundational value in the profession of counseling. Ethics education is provided throughout graduate school and considered mandatory in most states to maintain a license. Even with this emphasis on ethics education, violations continue, putting the welfare of clients, communities, the profession and the counselor in jeopardy. One complicating factor in ethics is the difficulty found in addressing values, beliefs, and attitudes during graduate programs. These student dispositions are even more complex to address when values lie at the core of ethical dilemmas. This study examines the writings of master’s level counseling students at the end of …

Examining The Role Of Shame In Somatic Pain And Symptoms, Heather Fritch
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Shame has been linked to several types of psychopathology, however its role in health and wellness is less understood. This study sought to answer the following questions to bring further theoretical understanding to the unique features that shame plays in somatic pain and symptoms. First, does internalized shame predict somatic pain and symptoms? Second, does externalized shame predict somatic pain and symptoms? Third, does internalized shame predict a greater influence over somatic pain and symptoms than externalized shame? Lastly, does externalized shame moderate the relationship between internalized shame and somatic pain and symptoms? This study revealed that internalized and externalized …
Problematic Sexual Beliefs And Behaviors In The Church: A Content Analysis Of Faith-Based Curricula Related To Evidence-Based Interventions, Vicki Neill
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Internet pornography use, sexual problems, and sexual addiction are problematic not only for society but also for the church. The religious community needs interventions that can effectively treat sexually addictive and non-addictive problems that do no harm to individuals. The purpose of this study was: (a) to examine five faith-based curricula available for use in churches to determine whether they include key evidence-based treatment (EBT) components found effective in treating sexual addiction, and (b) to determine whether these curricula differentiate between addictive versus non-addictive sexual behaviors. Because no known studies have been conducted to examine faith-based treatment (FBT) curricula for …
Effectively Transporting A Spiritually Based Intervention For Reducing Subsyndromal Anxiety And Increasing Coping Skills In Urban Adolescents: A Multiple Baseline Design, Morais Cassell
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
A critical review of literature revealed a gap in the literature of spiritually based interventions, most notably the subject of a spiritually based intervention for reducing subsyndromal anxiety and increasing coping skills in urban adolescents. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between a spiritually based intervention, a triangulation approach, subsyndromal anxiety, and coping skills in urban adolescents, employing the add-on/integration of a Prayer Wheel intervention. Utilizing a multiple baseline design across subjects to demonstrate the controlling effects of spiritually based intervention/prayer wheel, research revealed a decrease in subsyndromal anxiety levels, and an increase in coping skills …
Measuring Pornography Use Identity: Validation Study Of The Modified Centrality Of Event Scale, Michael Takacs
Measuring Pornography Use Identity: Validation Study Of The Modified Centrality Of Event Scale, Michael Takacs
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
There has been an increase in research focused on the influence that pornography use has on an individual. Observations of dysfunction with pornography users, in both clinical and religious settings, have driven a large part of this increase in research. Current research findings on religiosity and incongruent sexual behaviors further support the need to examine the correlation between the individual and their pornography use, especially with religious users. To date, there has been no research in the literature addressing the connection between the individual’s beliefs towards their pornography use and the effect of these beliefs on their identity or other …
The Relationship Between Counselor Educators' Leadership Experience And Competence And Burnout, John Harrichand
The Relationship Between Counselor Educators' Leadership Experience And Competence And Burnout, John Harrichand
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Mentorship and servant leadership are requirements of quality counselor educators. Recognized as leaders in the field of counseling, counselor educators exert great influence on students, clients, peers, and society at large. However, it is apparent from the paucity of research on the subject that attention and resources examining the impact leadership has on burnout in counselor educators is lacking. This study examined the relationship between a counselor educator’s experience and competence of leadership and dimensions of burnout. The results from this pilot study indicated no significant correlations between the Principles and Practices of Leadership Excellence Experience subscale and each of …
Religiosity, Moral Disapproval, Shame And Pornography Use: Assessing The Relationship Between Shame And Sexual Behaviors, Ryan Carboneau
Religiosity, Moral Disapproval, Shame And Pornography Use: Assessing The Relationship Between Shame And Sexual Behaviors, Ryan Carboneau
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Many compulsive and hypersexualized behaviors, including pornography use, have been associated with negative emotional, neurological, and psychosocial problems in a subset of users. Research showed that the constructs of shame, shame-proneness, and attachment may be related to the use of pornography as well as the theory of addiction. Shame-proneness is a construct that is consistently and positively associated with a variety of internalizing symptoms including depression, social, and generalized anxiety as well as a linked to an assortment of externalizing and risky behaviors such as anger, substance use, and criminal offending. Research suggested that higher levels of religiosity have a …
Social Work Trauma Interventions: Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Kassie Baumann
Social Work Trauma Interventions: Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Kassie Baumann
Senior Honors Theses
According to Lynne Weilart (2013), in her article on the reasons why people seek out therapy, trauma is the number one reason people attend counseling. Many different trauma-informed approaches are designed specifically to address the consequences of trauma and to facilitate healing. Some of these approaches are as follows: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT); Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT);Mentalization Based Therapy (MBT); Trauma Systems Therapy (TST); Trauma Assessment Pathway (TAP); and Attachment, Self-Regulation, and Competency (ARC) (de Arellano, Danielson, Ko, & Sprauge, 2008). The effectiveness of each trauma intervention will be examined. DBT is one of these trauma interventions that is growing …
Religious Advisors' Mental Illness Stigma: Pentecostal Attributions, Krista Kirk
Religious Advisors' Mental Illness Stigma: Pentecostal Attributions, Krista Kirk
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Some individuals, who subscribe to religious beliefs, often prefer to seek help from religious advisors when addressing mental health issues rather than seek help from mental health professionals. Although these religious advisors do not believe they have received adequate training to support individuals with these issues, they will still attempt to counsel them without the help of mental health professionals. One particular issue both types of practitioner face is the increase of the addictive qualities associated with problematic pornography use. The representation of the addictive qualities in problematic pornography use is a widespread concern, especially in religious communities, and mental …
Spiritually Oriented Cognitive Processing Therapy For Spiritual Struggle In Christian Sexual Assault Survivors With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Deborah Driggs
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
A Single Case Research Design (SCRD) with a multiple-baseline across participants was used to investigate the effects Spiritually Oriented Cognitive Processing Therapy-Cognitive (SOCPT-C) had on spiritual struggle, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) scores and depression in four Christian sexual assault survivors with PTSD reporting spiritual struggle. A complex reciprocal relationship between spiritual struggle and PTSD is suggested in the literature as influencing posttraumatic adjustment and treatment for Christian trauma survivors. Many empirically supported treatments (EST) for PTSD lack spiritual interventions to directly target effects from this relationship. Individuals completed an online pre-screening evaluation and an assessment was scheduled with those meeting …

The Effect Of A Bible Based Manualized Protocol Targeting Attachment To God In Anxiety And Stress, Sung Kim
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This study examined the effectiveness of the Bible-Based Stress Reduction Protocol-Attachment to God (BSRP-AG) in enhancing participants’ attachment to God and quality of life, decreasing perceived depression, anxiety, stress, and increasing overall spiritual well-being, using a randomized pretest and posttest design with waiting list control group among Hispanic population. The theory of stress, and attachment theory were discussed. At the same time, the relationship between stress, attachment, attachment to God and quality of life were considered as well. Lastly, the efficacy of Christian spiritual disciplines to improve attachment to God was argued. Thirty-four Hispanic individuals from Virginia participated in this …
