Benefits Of Large, Medium, And Small Grain Instruction For English-Speaking Adults Learning To Read Hangul, Emily Heneman, Christine Brennan Jan 2019

Benefits Of Large, Medium, And Small Grain Instruction For English-Speaking Adults Learning To Read Hangul, Emily Heneman, Christine Brennan

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Abstract

Bilingualism is a growing global norm and a requirement for many aspects of business and politics, motivating the need for research focused on second language (L2) learning. Research on L2 orthographic acquisition indicates that several factors play a role in learning to read in a new language, including similarities and differences between the orthographies of the L1 (first language) and L2, orthographic depth and consistency, and the method of reading instruction. This study compares three forms of instruction provided to English-speaking adults learning to read Hangul Korean. Instruction provided an initial focus on either small grain units (letters), medium ...

Argument Pedagogy For Everyday Life, Jeffrey P. Mehltretter Drury, Nicholas S. Paliewicz, Sara A. Mehltretter Drury Jan 2019

Argument Pedagogy For Everyday Life, Jeffrey P. Mehltretter Drury, Nicholas S. Paliewicz, Sara A. Mehltretter Drury

Journal of Communication Pedagogy

This article assists argumentation and debate instructors in developing courses that provide coverage of foundational concepts while reflecting their own interests. Courses in argumentation and debate also offer instructors an opportunity to teach through applied engagement with contemporary events. We encourage instructors to reflect on the various contexts of argumentation and debate as well as challenging questions concerning the role of technology in the classroom, the conflict between normative and descriptive examples of argumentation, how much to emphasize the role of argumentation and debate in societal change, and the connections between argumentation and deliberation.

Reflections On A Pedagogical Shift: A Public Speaking For Social Justice Model, Angela L. Putman Jan 2019

Reflections On A Pedagogical Shift: A Public Speaking For Social Justice Model, Angela L. Putman

Journal of Communication Pedagogy

While the basic content of the public speaking course has changed little, the method and manner in which these skills are taught can, and should, reflect the dynamic socio-political contexts in which we live and teach. This reflection essay addresses a struggle to keep the public speaking course relevant, innovative, and practical while also incorporating necessary learning outcomes. As a potential solution, I introduce a Public Speaking for Social Justice Model for the introductory course. The model requires that students thoroughly examine a timely social justice issue; situate themselves and their classmates within the issue while featuring marginalized voices and ...

Make The Inaugural Great Again: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Donald J. Trump’S Inaugural Address, Danielle F. Dickerson Jan 2019

Make The Inaugural Great Again: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Donald J. Trump’S Inaugural Address, Danielle F. Dickerson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, I utilized three distinct theories (ideographs, dramatism, and the bully pulpit) to rhetorically analyze and assess President Trump’s 2017 inaugural address. Ultimately, I analyzed whether Trump deviated from Campbell and Jamieson’s (1985) presidential inaugural expectations. While the presidential inaugural address was the only text analyzed, implications were drawn from Trump’s rhetoric leading up to and within the inaugural. This thesis also analyzed Trump’s rhetoric through social media, specifically Twitter, and looked at the context surrounding the inaugural. I suggest, through my research, that Trump does deviate from the traditional framework of the inaugural ...

Fear, Power, & Teeth (2007), Olivia Hockenbroch Jan 2019

Fear, Power, & Teeth (2007), Olivia Hockenbroch

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Vagina dentata is the myth of the toothed vagina; in most iterations, it serves as a warning to men that women’s vaginas must be conquered to be safe for a man’s sexual pleasure (Koehler, 2017). The vagina dentata myth has been carried forth from ancient ancestors in numerous cultures all over the world (Koehler). It is one of many destructive cultural myths that guides discourses about sex and women’s bodies. In this paper, I explore a recent articulation of the myth, the 2007 film Teeth, and I argue that in this film, the vagina dentata is made ...

The Climate Change Sublime: Leveraging The Immense Awe Of The Planetary Threat Of Climate Change, Sean D. Quartz Jan 2019

The Climate Change Sublime: Leveraging The Immense Awe Of The Planetary Threat Of Climate Change, Sean D. Quartz

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Environmental communication scholarship has not significantly advanced the fundamental theories of sublime discourse since their introduction with John Muir and his advocacy for Yosemite National Park. Such a lacuna is problematic, as humanity is entering the age of the Anthropocene where vast ecological destruction is becoming increasingly relevant, and audience engagement is essential if we are to mitigate the worst to come. This essay seeks to remedy the lack of inquiry into how sublime discourse is used to engage audiences with elements of the Anthropocene, in particular, climate change. Based on the analysis of two documentaries, Chasing Ice and Chasing ...

The Rhetorical Situation Meets Adult Education: A Public Speaking Workshop For B-School Graduate Students, Lindsey Ives, Janet Tinoco, Sally Blomstrom Dec 2018

The Rhetorical Situation Meets Adult Education: A Public Speaking Workshop For B-School Graduate Students, Lindsey Ives, Janet Tinoco, Sally Blomstrom

Lindsey Ives

Extant research indicates that there continues to be a gap between employer expectations and the oral presentation skills of B-school graduate students. In order to address this gap, the authors undertook a three-year effort to research, develop, and administer a public speaking workshop focused on preparing new business graduate students to meet industry demands for presentation skills and strategies. Survey and focus group data informed several revisions to the workshop plan. The series of revisions and participant responses point toward the importance of adjusting the elements of the rhetorical situation in order to account for the principles of andragogy when ...
