Where and how might we alternatively understand science as representation and figure rhetoric as material---and thus trace the ways meaning comes to be constructed in scientific and rhetorical practices, in particular historic moments, for the benefit of some and at the cost of Others? This exploration is situated in a study of anthropology as a social science, emerging as a discipline in the early part of the twentieth century. In this dissertation, I demonstrate the relationship between narrative representation and psychoanalysis, first by describing the psychoanalytical project, second, by showing how deeply psychoanalysis has penetrated our collective consciousness, and third, by discussing its reception today. This study uses narrative theory as an investigative tool for the study of a considerable piece of intellectual history: the making of theory in psychoanalysis. Rhetoric And Metaphor In The Emergence Of Modern Physics , Richard David Johnson

This dissertation offers a series of rhetorical analyses of the seminal papers of the quantum theory. Specifically, it discusses the central role that metaphors play in the invention of new scientific arguments that form the basis of schools of scientific thought. The theory of metaphor that is developed for analysis is situated into the tradition of the rhetoric of the "older" sophists of ancient Greece. Metaphor, or more accurately 'trope,' was a constitutive feature of sophistic beliefs about language and rhetoric.
