Third Space Sites, Subjectivities And Discourses: Reimagining The Representational Potentials Of (B)Orderlands' Rhetorics , Adela C. Licona

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation identifies feminist third-space (both/and) consciousness in academic and non-academic contexts. Although dissimilar, both academic discourses and zines (self-published magazines) are comprised of complex rhetorical performances with implications for feminist practices of representation and the re-production of meaning. This dissertation analyzes academic third-space sites resulting from the crossing of disciplinary borders and activist zines as examples of nonacademic third space, with particular emphasis on representations of bodies and sexualities. Zines reveal (1) the transformative potentials beyond gender binaries; (2) the importance of revisioning histories; (3) the practices of what I term "reverso" (critical reversals of the normative gaze ...

Be-Coming Subjects: Reclaiming A Politics Of Location As Radical Political Rhetoric , Catherine Olive-Marie Fox

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The Aetiology Of An Argument: How Scientism Affected Freud's (Mis)Treatment Of Dora's (Hy)Story , Sue Ann Tatro

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, I demonstrate the relationship between narrative representation and psychoanalysis, first by describing the psychoanalytical project, second, by showing how deeply psychoanalysis has penetrated our collective consciousness, and third, by discussing its reception today. This study uses narrative theory as an investigative tool for the study of a considerable piece of intellectual history: the making of theory in psychoanalysis. My premises are: (1) Narrative theory provides tools for understanding intellectual history through the making of knowledge, in this case, psychoanalytic knowledge; (2) Narrative concepts of time, authority, personal agency, and determinism are particularly useful when applied to psychoanalytic ...

Gendered Graphics: An Examination Of The Effect Of Gender On Visuals In Professional Communication , Michael Joseph Hassett

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation reports a study that examines the effect of gender on the creation and interpretation of visuals used in diagrams of the sunflowerseed oil extraction process;Gender has long been considered an issue worth pursuing in studies of communication behaviors. Research completed on gender and communication can be divided into two areas: (1) studies investigating performance differences between males and females and (2) studies investigating the perception of differences between males and females. This dissertation explores definitions of gender and surveys research in gender and communication in both areas. It applies this research to the use of visual elements ...
