Journalism, Gatekeeping, And Interactivity, Neil Thurman Jan 2015

Journalism, Gatekeeping, And Interactivity, Neil Thurman

Neil Thurman

Gate-keeping is one of the most inclusive research traditions in the field of journalism studies. In its investigations into the processes “by which the vast array of potential news messages are winnowed, shaped, and prodded into these few that are actually transmitted by news media (Shoemaker et al., 2001: 233) it accommodates political and economic influences—as well as organizational routines and practices; the influence of the audience, outside sources, and technology; and journalists’ individual characteristics and collective professional values. However, changes in how technology and the audience—individually and collectively—are taking on journalistic gate-keeping functions; how established gate-keeping routines have changed …

Real-Time Online Reporting: Best Practices For Live Blogging, Neil Thurman Jan 2014

Real-Time Online Reporting: Best Practices For Live Blogging, Neil Thurman

Neil Thurman

Contemporary live online reporting makes the most of converging technological platforms and includes not just text but a range of content including still and moving images and audio. Social media platforms are an important source of content, which is often embedded directly. The resulting news artefact is referred to using a variety of names, including “news streams’, “live updating news pages”, and “live blogs”. This last term has been adopted for the purposes of this chapter. Live blogs are becoming increasingly common, with, for example, the Guardian’s website publishing close to 150 per month. They are also a relatively popular …

Justice Stewart Meets The Press, Keith Bybee Jan 2014

Justice Stewart Meets The Press, Keith Bybee

Keith J. Bybee

Among the Supreme Court Justices who have articulated distinctive views of free expression, Justice Potter Stewart alone placed particular emphasis on the First Amendment's protection of a free press. Drawing upon the lessons of history, the plain language of the Constitution, the political events of his day, and his own personal experience, Stewart argued that the organized news media should be considered an essential part of the checks-and-balances competition between the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of the federal government. Stewart’s emphasis on the special structural function of the established press placed him at odds with most of his colleagues …

One Journalist, Two Roles: What Happens When Journalists Work As Media Coordinators?, Jonathan Peters Jan 2013

One Journalist, Two Roles: What Happens When Journalists Work As Media Coordinators?, Jonathan Peters

Jonathan Peters

Individuals interacting with society possess multiple roles, and yet the study of journalistic role conceptions, based on the assumption that role conceptions influence journalistic outputs, has not addressed the idea that journalists possess multiple roles inside and outside the field. A peculiar arrangement in Missouri is the appointment of journalists to serve as media coordinators for the courts. Using a symbolic interactionism framework, we explore how media coordinators experience their duality of roles.

E-Journals And The Continuum Of Content: Exponential Expansion Is Near, Gordon C. Tibbitts Jul 2009

E-Journals And The Continuum Of Content: Exponential Expansion Is Near, Gordon C. Tibbitts

Gordon C. Tibbitts III

e-Journals are evolving and will soon contain a massive array of information including data sets, blogs, videos, forums, conferences, interlinked services, chats, and more. They are expanding the comprehensiveness, depth, detail, and breadth of scholarly communication and forming a continuum from the traditional ISI ranked journals and all other forms of scholarship. e-Journals in their new form contain independently discoverable content items which rise in value when attributes of registration, certification, awareness, archiving, and reward are applied as they have been for centuries to traditional journal articles. As these new e-journals expand so will the move to a more immediate …

An Ethnographic Study Of The Media Consumption Habits Of Registered Nurses In The Chicago Designated Market Area (Dma), Sherri L. Ter Molen Jun 2009

An Ethnographic Study Of The Media Consumption Habits Of Registered Nurses In The Chicago Designated Market Area (Dma), Sherri L. Ter Molen

Sherri L. Ter Molen

Because there has been a nursing shortage for the past decade and because the competition between employers for experienced registered nurses is fierce, I utilized archival quantitative data from a syndicated advertising database known as The Media Audit, quantitative data I collected from 100 surveys, qualitative data that I collected from 15 interviews, and qualitative data that I collected during 20 hours of observations in hospital cafeterias and nearby restaurants to discover how RNs use media, whether or not they share these media as an occupational co-culture, & their attitudes toward recruitment advertising in these media. This study draws upon …

The Power Of “Small Stories:” Narratives And Notions Of Gender Equality In Conversations About Sport, Marie Hardin, Erin E. Whiteside Jun 2009

The Power Of “Small Stories:” Narratives And Notions Of Gender Equality In Conversations About Sport, Marie Hardin, Erin E. Whiteside

Erin E Whiteside

This study examines narratives by young adults about sport and gender in relation to equality. Specifically, we explore how focus-group participants used small stories to situate male and female athletes and Title IX. The U.S. law has been credited for increasing opportunities for girls and women but is considered a source of tension for gender relations. Our findings suggest that participants’ stories ultimately did not support emancipatory goals for girls and women because they positioned equality as a right women had not earned. We argue that feminists cannot underestimate the need to inject counternarratives into public discourse at every level, …

Diabolical Frivolity Of Neoliberal Fundamentalism, Sefik Tatlic Jan 2009

Diabolical Frivolity Of Neoliberal Fundamentalism, Sefik Tatlic

Sefik Tatlic

Today, we cannot talk just about plain control, but we must talk about the nature of the interaction of the one who is being controlled and the one who controls, an interaction where the one that is “controlled” is asking for more control over himself/herself while expecting to be compensated by a surplus of freedom to satisfy trivial needs and wishes. Such a liberty for the fulfillment of trivial needs is being declared as freedom. But this implies as well the freedom to choose not to be engaged in any kind of socially sensible or politically articulated struggle.

Hamas Controlled Televised News Media: Counter- Peace, Allen Gnanam Jan 2009

Hamas Controlled Televised News Media: Counter- Peace, Allen Gnanam

Allen Gnanam

The hegemonic force of Hamas censored televised news media in Gaza, can not be fully comprehended and appreciated without recognizing the role of propaganda, censorship, and the historical context of the middle east. These 3 interrelated dimensions will be analyzed using functionalism, the mass society theory, the dominant ideology framework, the critical criminology framework, and the symbolic interactionist framework. Through censorship, Hamas news media outlets were able to unilaterally inject culturally relevant propaganda, into the minds of children and citizens. The hypodermic syringe model can be applied to the state controlled news media situation in Gaza, as the people of …

Summary: Israeli- Palestinian Ethnic Conflict, Allen Gnanam Jan 2009

Summary: Israeli- Palestinian Ethnic Conflict, Allen Gnanam

Allen Gnanam

The Israeli- Palestinian ethnic conflict will continue to escalate throughout both the short term and long term world future. The current and future animosity between both ethnic groups can be attributed to (a) history based accounts and religious tensions, (b) polarizing ideologies held by both sides, and (c) middle eastern resentment toward the Jewish state of Israel. History based accounts will refer to both biased historical accounts and factual historical events that have contributed to the Israeli- Palestinian ethnic conflict. Concepts such as ethnicity, nationalism, ideology, Palestinians, Israeli’s, Arabs, and religion will be conceptualized in the research paper.

Israeli- Palestinian Ethnic Conflict, Allen Gnanam Jan 2009

Israeli- Palestinian Ethnic Conflict, Allen Gnanam

Allen Gnanam

This research paper discusses the historical, religious, and ideological factors linked to the Israeli- Palestinian ethnic conflict, and how these factors have contributed to middle eastern resentment toward the Jewish State of Israeli. The Modernist Theory, Perceptual Framework, and he Domestic Framework have been applied to the analysis of the Israeli- Palestinian ethnic conflict, in order to demonstrate the intensity of the above factors and their provocative role in the conflict. Other provocative issues that are discussed in this paper include territorial wars, ethnic nationalism, the competition for natural resources, the biased dissemination of historical text through educational institutions, and …

Being Aristotelean: Using Virtue Ethics In An Applied Media Ethics Course, Wendy N. Wyatt Jan 2008

Being Aristotelean: Using Virtue Ethics In An Applied Media Ethics Course, Wendy N. Wyatt

Wendy N Wyatt

This essay explores the tendency of undergraduate media ethics students to do what Bernard Gert calls “morality by slogans” and their tendency to misuse Aristotle’s golden mean slogan. While not solving the dilemma of morality by slogans, the essay suggests some ways of rectifying the misuse of the golden mean and encouraging its more authentic application.

Toward A Global Media Ethics: Theoretical Perspectives, Clifford G. Christians, Shakuntala Rao, Stephen J.A. Ward, Herman Wasserman Jan 2008

Toward A Global Media Ethics: Theoretical Perspectives, Clifford G. Christians, Shakuntala Rao, Stephen J.A. Ward, Herman Wasserman

Shakuntala Rao

Theoretical debates about global media ethics have been marked by disagreements about the nature, possibility, and desirability of a global ethics. This article attempts to address those disagreements by developing an “ethics of universal being” as the philosophical basis for a global media ethics, an ethics expressed by such universals as the sacredness of life, truth, and nonviolence. The article aims to explore various theoretical positions on global media ethics by providing an overview of the literature and seeking ways in which common ground may be found between these different positions. This approach is developed in two ways. First, it …

China- Tibet Conflict, Allen Gnanam Jan 2008

China- Tibet Conflict, Allen Gnanam

Allen Gnanam

China- Tibet tensions are continually growing, as Tibetans are protesting for total independence from China, despite condemnation from their spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, who is only seeking a sense of autonomy for Tibet (Sinder, 2008). As Tibetan protests are becoming violent and aggressive, the Dalai Lama has also threatened to resign as Tibet’s government in exile (Sinder, 2008), however, his rhetoric is not being exposed to the Tibetan people, due to government censorship in China. Therefore the Dalai Lama, an exiled institutional entrepreneur, has to find new methods that will enable his influential message, to be received by the …

The Cherokee-Freedmen Story: What The Media Saw, Ronald Smith Jan 2007

The Cherokee-Freedmen Story: What The Media Saw, Ronald Smith

Ronald D Smith APR

National media and international journalists watched in March 2007, as voters in the Cherokee Nation decided issues of citizenship. Reporters looked at the same situation and often talked with the same people, but they didn’t always see the same story.

Some journalists saw the Cherokee-Freedmen story as one about race and civil rights; some saw it as being about Cherokee sovereignty and Indian identity. This content analysis investigates media reporting on the issue.

Two Polls Show Media And Government Out Of Step With The Public, Ronald Smith Jan 2007

Two Polls Show Media And Government Out Of Step With The Public, Ronald Smith

Ronald D Smith APR

It makes for an interesting and unusual image -- public opinion marching down the path of social progress; government and the news media on the other side, out of step with the people who make up the media-using citizenry.

The specifics of this report deal with taxation proposals in New York State, but close your eyes and you'll see the obvious parallels throughout ther country in dozens of situations in which states tell Indian tribes and nations what they should or should not do, or what the state would like to do to them.

Fundamentally, this report deals with the …
