Sexual Differences In A Californian Hunter-Gatherer Population, Elizabeth Weiss Jan 1998

Sexual Differences In A Californian Hunter-Gatherer Population, Elizabeth Weiss

Faculty Publications, Anthropology

This project examined the skeletal remains of a 3, 000-year-o/d preagricultural population to determine whether a sexual division of labor existed. Cortical bone remodels itself throughout an individual's lifetime in response to the stresses experienced by activity patterns. Cortical bone morphology, therefore, discloses the nature of the stresses caused by different activity patterns. Computer tomography was used to obtain femoral cross-sections for 30 females and 34 males, taken at two levels along the diaphysis of the bone in order to determine the direction from which the major bending stresses are created. Student's t-tests and Analysis of Variance were used to …

Authoritative Leadership In Economic Development : A Malaysian Case Study, John Carleton Jan 1998

Authoritative Leadership In Economic Development : A Malaysian Case Study, John Carleton

Honors Theses

The count of Malaysia has its share of resources with which it has developed into a world trading power. Alongside the other Newly Industrialized Economies (NIEs), it has profited from a hard-working citizenry, natural wealth in geography or resources, and a stable government. However; this country has been able to lift itself above its peers and other countries in the world beyond the limits prescribed by these benefits alone. The reason behind this success may be found by looking at the country's historical and recent leadership trends. Since the country's inception, the public leaders of Malaysia have imposed upon its …

Reciprocal Leadership, A Practical Approach To Leadership, Wendy Pierce Jan 1998

Reciprocal Leadership, A Practical Approach To Leadership, Wendy Pierce

Honors Theses

Forward-looking leadership carries much more responsibility than in the past. Many organizations today are under fire to change with the times-and why not? We cannot afford to live within the fabulous fifties mindset that thrived under fantastical structures of bosses, middlemen, and elaborate pecking orders. The New York minute has quickly become the pacesetter for many of our industry leaders. Everything happens in a millisecond: email. faxes, and virtual offices have become the norm for American and international business endeavors. Today's competitive environment demands intense improvement in productivity, quality, and response time. In order to keep pace with instant gratification …

The Impact Of Mentor Programs For At Risk Youth: Leadership Through Service, Buzz Lambert Jan 1998

The Impact Of Mentor Programs For At Risk Youth: Leadership Through Service, Buzz Lambert

Honors Theses

It is becoming more and more common for children to be raised by single parents or by ulterior guardians in today's society. Children need role models who can help fill the gap of parents or older siblings. Role models are viable for support or to answer questions these children may have about life. Effective mentors can enlighten children about the importance of education and hard work. This evolution does not happen overnight. In fact, success takes much energy and effort. It is also important to understand that some youth cannot be reached. Mentoring is not fail-safe. At times, it can …

Leadership, Gender, And Division I Athletics, A Study Of Athletes' Needs Based On Gender, Carol Knerr Jan 1998

Leadership, Gender, And Division I Athletics, A Study Of Athletes' Needs Based On Gender, Carol Knerr

Honors Theses

Athletics is a significant area where leadership can be observed and studied. Through my experience in athletics up to the college level, I have noticed that coaches coach differently depending on if they are coaching male or female athletes. For example, I have noticed that coaches of male sports teams sometimes yell, scream, and directly insult their players in order to motivate them. This technique seems to work for the men but generally might not be as successful for female athletes. This is simply an observation that is not backed up by research. Some research has been done on different …

Cross-Cultural Leadership Training, Merilee Karr Jan 1998

Cross-Cultural Leadership Training, Merilee Karr

Honors Theses

Research is cross-cultural training is a young and growing field. The practitioners included in this research have yet to develop a comprehensive training based on needs or desired outcomes. Therefore the level of understanding for this growing area of human resources and increasingly important issue in global competition has yet to reach a point where managers can confidently justify the expense to the company. That is not to say that some companies do not see the need for this type of training, but without proper proof of the effectiveness of the expense, it is difficult to convince executives of its …

Corporate Leadership, Sarah M. Gravelle Jan 1998

Corporate Leadership, Sarah M. Gravelle

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Corporations can initiate an emergent form of leadership that encompasses the importance of values and relationships into the philosophies that articulate the organizational direction. This thesis established the most and least often articulated values from the mission statements of the Fortune 50 corporations. One of the observations noted by this research is that profit is the most frequent and loyalty is the least. The author finds this problematic and states that establishing an emergent form of leadership can be beneficial to organizations by redefining the practice of leadership within the organization, thus redefining the culture. Furthermore, the organizational transformation can …

Venetian Beads, Frank Hird Jan 1998

Venetian Beads, Frank Hird

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

Interesting accounts of the manufacture of Venetian glass beads turn up in the most unlikely places. The one reproduced here was published in The Girl's Own Paper for February 1, 1896 (Vol. 17, No. 840, pp. 292-294). In addition to presenting a decent description of the manufacture of drawn and blown beads during the latter part of the 19th century, Mr. Hird gives us details concerning the setting in which the beadmakers and bead stringers worked. Paint peels from the ceilings of the rooms where women make blown beads, and half-dressed men sweat in the heat from the glass furnaces. …

Dressed To Kill: Jade Beads And Pendants In The Maya Lowlands, David M. Pendergast Jan 1998

Dressed To Kill: Jade Beads And Pendants In The Maya Lowlands, David M. Pendergast

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

Jade was a material of paramount importance in ancient Maya life owing to its symbolic significance. The meanings of jade's color lent to the stone, and to those adorned with objects fashioned from it, an unmistakable aura of power. As a result, jade objects figure very prominently in the archaeological record, and their forms and contexts bespeak their ancient meanings. The tracing of the shapes, carving, production techniques, and use history of jades underscores the role of jade in Maya belief, political economy, and personal ornamentation.

Melanau Bead Culture: A Vanishing World?, Heidi Munan Jan 1998

Melanau Bead Culture: A Vanishing World?, Heidi Munan

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

Settled on the South China Sea coast of Sarawak, the Melanau comprise an aristocratic society which used to have a strong bead culture, tied to animist religion. Developments in the 19th and 20th centuries have influenced the traditional way of life so that today, only a few Melanau still keep a significant number of beads. Nevertheless, shamen and healers, adherents to the old religion, continue to use beads in healing and purification ceremonies. Bereaved families protect themselves by wearing special beads, and by providing the deceased with beads according to his or her status in the traditional hierarchy. Specific kinds …
