Sheridan College is a diploma and degree granting institution with three campuses in the Greater Toronto Area of Ontario, Canada, with an estimated population of 21,000 full-time students.

During each academic year, Sheridan Library participates in a variety of orientation sessions for specific faculties, programs and departments. In 2014 the library’s approach to orientation programming changed when it sought to increase its focus on the quality of the first year experience and introduced a First Year Experience Librarian. Library and Learning Services (LLS) at Sheridan College is committed to supporting first year students through orientations and information literacy instruction. One area that is often overlooked is introducing students to the importance of academic integrity (AI). In 2016, LLS welcomed an academic integrity facilitator to its staff. This role supports faculty with academic integrity and works with the first year academic skills librarian to support student understanding and awareness of AI, particularly in the first year. Topics discussed included: the role of the First Year Academic Skills Librarian, the development of a “First Year Library Team” as well as future directions and upcoming initiatives. This session presented at the Ontario Library Association Super Conference 2018 discussed how Sheridan Library and Learning Services has addressed and enhanced the First Year Experience and how you can apply our lessons learned to your library.

What is an Exam Jam and how can your library host one? Sheridan Library’s First Year Team helps students foster research and other academic skills during a students’ first year at College. Libraries tend to focus on research skills related to assignments but what can we do to help students when it comes to their first Exams? Sheridan Library’s First Year Team poster, presented at the Ontario Library Association 2017 Poster session, will answer these questions and help you decide if hosting an Exam Jam is right for your institution.

At Sheridan, originality matters; prevention and education to reduce breaches of academic integrity (AI) is our shared responsibility. This past year, Library and Learning Services explored what an Integrated AI Model might look like at Sheridan. Extensive research including a literature review and interviews with experts from universities across North America was carried out.

This report summarizes the findings and includes recommendations for an Integrated AI Model.
