In 2015, ten Iowa and Nebraska academic library systems prepared to migrate to Alma and Primo. Simultaneous adoption of a common ILS was unprecedented in Iowa, and we knew this was an opportunity to forge stronger connections between our libraries, collections, and institutions. Representatives from each library began meeting to discuss shared goals and objectives, and they formed TRAC: the Two Rivers Alma Collaborative.
Four TRAC libraries already belonged to a small regional consortium, but the rest did not. Our parallel migration timelines provided a chance to leverage our common--if not shared--library platform. Discussions ranged from sharing a Primo environment …

An Old Tool With Enduring Value: Using Excel To Prepare Data For Analysis, Gregory A. Smith

Gregory A. Smith

Microsoft Excel was first released on the Windows platform 30 years ago and has since become widely used. Although new tools for manipulating, analyzing, and visualizing data are constantly emerging, Excel remains a potent tool—and not just because of newer features. Simple functions such as TRIM, MID, SUBSTITUTE, FIND, ROUNDDOWN, and VLOOKUP can be used to manipulate data sets in powerful ways. This workshop applies selected functions to realistic library data sets. Demonstrations include: deriving time-series categories from date and time stamps pre-coding survey comments based on keywords dealing with messy data points such as call numbers and publisher names …

In 2014, access services librarians and professional staff from various institutions all over New Jersey came together at The College of New Jersey, in Ewing Township, to discuss regional trends and issues in access services. Library staff at these institutions face many of the same issues from managing student assistants, to dealing with stacks management, and handling building security. The goal of the daylong meeting was to build bonds between access services staff at the different institutions, and to learn from one another's experiences during a series of roundtable discussions, and informal conversations over coffee and lunch. It …

Academic Librarians And Labor Unions: Attitudes And Experiences, Ian Mccullough Dec 2017

Academic Librarians And Labor Unions: Attitudes And Experiences, Ian Mccullough

Ian McCullough

This research project investigates librarians’ attitudes toward unions and collective bargaining through data collected from a nationwide survey of 359 academic librarians in the United States. We found that academic librarians have a generally positive view of unions and collective bargaining agreements, a notable result in a national political atmosphere that is demonstrably anti-union. Union membership is strongly bound to faculty status. Our research results imply that unionization and collective bargaining provide stronger job protections and higher wages than faculty status alone, and suggest that discussions of faculty status in academic libraries may not have provided best possible way to …
