None Of Our Business: Examining The Economics And Business Dynamics Of The Library And Information Industry, Jason Folkman, Alex J. Sundt, Robert Heaton, Erica Finch, Stephanie Western, Nick Gittins

Library Faculty & Staff Presentations

Librarians are often referred to as information professionals and talk of the "information industry," but how much do we actually know about the business side of publishing and library vendors? As vendors and publishers continue to consolidate, and costs increase for libraries and our communities, the business side of libraries deserves greater scrutiny from the library community which often shies away from critically examining our role in the greater information industry. Building our awareness and engaging in critical discourse of the library industry is essential for securing our bargaining power, navigating our role as stewards of our collections, and situating …

Altruism Or Self-Interest? Exploring The Motivations Of Open Access Authors, Robert Heaton, Dylan Burns, Becky Thoms

Library Faculty & Staff Publications

More than 250 authors at Utah State University published an Open Access (OA) article in 2016. Analysis of survey results and publication data from Scopus suggests that the following factors led authors to choose OA venues: ability to pay publishing charges, disciplinary colleagues’ positive attitudes toward OA, and personal feelings such as altruism and desire to reach a wide audience. Tenure status was not an apparent factor. This article adds to the body of literature on author motivations and can inform library outreach and marketing efforts, the creation of new publishing models, and the conversation about the larger scholarly publishing …

What Resources Do School Librarians Use When Developing New Programming: A Qualitative Inquiry, Jennifer Hansen Aug 2018

What Resources Do School Librarians Use When Developing New Programming: A Qualitative Inquiry, Jennifer Hansen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

For this qualitative analysis, I analyzed observational and interview data from two middle school librarians setting up new active learning programs. I focused my research by analyzing the preliminary data gathered in field notes from observations at the different library sites to determine what programming resources the librarians were using. A secondary consideration was drawn from preliminary evidence, which indicated the librarians turned to many on and offline information resources, including the social curating site Pinterest. After gathering initial data from observations, I gathered additional data from two interviews: the first interview focused on where the librarians find information and …

Where Is Government Information? The Complex Relationship Between Libraries & Federal Repositories, Dylan Burns, Jennifer Kirk

Library Faculty & Staff Presentations

Through data analysis and a survey, this research identifies the location of government documents departments/units in academic libraries – including their institutional orientation, current practices, & future plans.

This preliminary data analysis presents trends amongst the community of academic library participants in the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP), of which they comprise 55% of the total. We identify common practices and priorities that might foster collaboration.

How To Rate A Book: Goodreads, Taste, And Reading In The 21st Century, Dylan Burns Sep 2017

How To Rate A Book: Goodreads, Taste, And Reading In The 21st Century, Dylan Burns

Library Faculty & Staff Presentations

“What shall the individual who still desires to read attempt to read this late in history?” asks Harold Bloom. Writing at the end of the 20th century, Bloom’s quote anticipates the information explosion that the age of the internet brought to the reader (even if his emphasis is on the unpopularity of reading rather than the explosion in options). Social media sites like Goodreads prove that reading is still popular, yet Bloom’s question of what does someone read is still salient. More than ever, reading is a social activity, to be shared, debated, and justified between millions of would …

No Really, We Can Help With This: Librarians Facilitating Research Assignment Design, Rachel Wishkoski, Kacy Lundstrom, Erin Davis

Library Faculty & Staff Presentations

Premises:

  • Students need scaffolded, authentic opportunities to practice and develop research skills.
  • Interdisciplinary faculty collaboration on assignment redesign facilitates peer feedback that isn't usually available.
  • Bringing librarians to the assignment design table establishes stronger connections with and among teaching faculty and promotes deeper learning opportunities for students.

Key principles:

  • Reflect on where students get stuck.
  • Make the implicit explicit.
  • Scaffold the research process.
  • Offer formative assessment and opportunities for peer learning.
  • Consider authentic, "renewable," or public-facing end products.

More Than A Mausoleum: The Library At The Forefront Of Digital Pedagogy, Dylan Burns Jan 2017

More Than A Mausoleum: The Library At The Forefront Of Digital Pedagogy, Dylan Burns

Library Faculty & Staff Presentations

Some of the more nostalgic set have opined about the “death” of the traditional library and how universities need to “Save the stacks.” Are we losing the traditional library to chase digital trends?

This paper will argue that the incorporation of Digital Humanities into the library is leading to an explosion of new collections adventures. If we take one definition of Digital Humanities as the presentation of humanities research through digital means as Josh Honn suggests ("Never Neutral: Critical Approaches to Digital Tools & Culture in the Humanities" [2013], 6), a shift in focus toward the Digital is providing new …

Libraries At The Hub As The Federally Funded Research Wheel Turns To Open, Kipphut-Smith Shannon, Betty Rozum, Becky Thoms

Library Faculty & Staff Presentations

Libraries are strong partners in supporting researcher compliance with both funder public access policies and institutional open access policies, and are increasingly involved in research data management activities. The 2008 National Institutes of Health(NIH) Public Access Policy, requiring researchers to deposit copies of all NIH‐funded publications in PubMed Central, provided an opportunity for academic librarians to use their expertise in education and training, copyright, and author rights issues to assist with policy compliance. At the same time, many institutions began conversations about management of research data and adoption of institutional open access (OA) policies, requiring faculty to place copies of their …

The How And Why Of Mentoring, Alison H. Stankrauff, Tom Sommer, Michelle Ganz

Journal of Western Archives

Mentoring those in the archival field is critical to the development of any professional, or budding professional archivist. The mentoring relationship is one that has the potential to inform, nurture, encourage those on both sides of the relationship. This article explores that relationship and the frameworks that foster such mentoring programs. Discussed are mentoring to undergraduates, graduate archival program students, peer-to-peer mentoring of archivists at different institutions, as well as mentoring in the tenure process. This article is meant to be at once informative about such programs as well as offering guidance for those wanting to create a similar mentoring …

Library User Persona Template, Mikkel Skinner, Bret Crane Jan 2015

Library User Persona Template, Mikkel Skinner, Bret Crane

Library Faculty & Staff Publications

These seven templates provide an excellent starting point for the development of user personas for library communities of various types. Templates can be printed and written on as part of an ad-hoc brainstorming exercise, or edited within Adobe Acrobat or Illustrator. While user personas can be generated from staff knowledge and experiences (assumption-driven), depending on how you wish to use personas, it is recommended that you conduct user research (data-driven), either observing users interacting with the library, interviewing patrons, or drawing insight from assessment or usage data to help validate their accuracy.

See these sources for more information on creating …

The Bonds Of Organization: Zine Archives And The Archival Tradition, Rachel Woodbrook, Althea Lazzaro Jun 2013

The Bonds Of Organization: Zine Archives And The Archival Tradition, Rachel Woodbrook, Althea Lazzaro

Journal of Western Archives

There is a current movement amongst zine archives toward collaboration and the standardization of policies and practices. As a relatively new area of archival collecting, zine archives are progressing through core archival issues at a rapid pace; this progression provides an opportunity for them to redefine traditional archival practices in relation to their specific needs.

The community-based nature of their collections compel zine archivists and librarians to include their unique audiences in the mapping of traditional practices onto the organic structures of their largely grassroots organizations: they are translators and interpreters between archival theory and this grassroots practice. Ideally, this …

Providing Enhanced Access For The Oregon State University College Catalogs : A Case Study, Susan A. Kunda, Elizabeth A. Nielsen Oct 2011

Providing Enhanced Access For The Oregon State University College Catalogs : A Case Study, Susan A. Kunda, Elizabeth A. Nielsen

Journal of Western Archives

The academic catalog is a vital record for colleges and universities. Until the late 1980s, Oregon State University catalogs were published, distributed and archived solely in print format. With the advent of web and digital technologies, the Oregon State University Registrar’s Office also began placing an electronic version of the most recent catalogs online, while the Oregon State University Libraries provided access to earlier versions of the catalog through a subscription to College Source®, an online vendor for academic catalogs.

In 2006, the Registrar’s Office was looking for a home for its archive of digital files, while the escalating cost …
