Like an increasing number of academic libraries, Purdue University Libraries provides publishing support services to the Purdue community. In 2009, Purdue University Press had recently been moved into the Libraries, and there was enthusiasm about exploring new relationships which could combine the publishing skills of the Press with use of Purdue e-Pubs, the institutional repository platform that also featured powerful publishing features. Publishing an undergraduate research journal was particularly appealing because it connected the scholarly communication program of the Libraries with strategic goals around information literacy. Dramatic declines in state appropriations for postsecondary education, the rise of performance-based funding models, and limitations on tuition increases have resulted in a focus on student retention as a matter of importance to institutions of higher education. Concomitantly, academic libraries face changes in service models brought about by technology and the rising costs of providing access to an ever-expanding field of literature required by academic programs and faculty. Presentation describes bringing a display of student scholarship to Penfield Library at SUNY Oswego. Two science librarians approached faculty members regarding potential participation and then organized a showcase of science research inside the library. Having research posters displayed in a visible, central, and active location allows the broader campus community to view the latest research from students and faculty. Reaching out to science faculty reminds them that librarians can help with their library needs, and that the library is a place to highlight their and their students’ research.

Faculty Scholarship

This article suggests a new set of filters through which to evaluate law library services, in particular those that support faculty scholarship. These filters include recent profound changes in legal education and the motivators of today’s law professors. By understanding the needs of self-interested deans and professors, libraries can fill new roles that are consistent with our core values. Libraries can also focus on dissemination and promotion of faculty work, especially through innovative open access projects.

The inspiration for this essay is Barbara Fister’s assertion that librarians must embrace functions that have not traditionally been part of the academic librarian’s portfolio. We shall examine the need for career adaptability in librarianship and use a case study to illustrate the four attributes librarians need to develop to ensure career adaptability. The case study involved collaboration between Kansas State University (KSU) Libraries, an agronomy professor, and the Global Research Alliance to develop an open access croplands research database. In 2007, the author examined existing academic libraries in the United States to determine best practices for the design, implementation and service of learning commons facilities. A primary objective of this study was to discover how to create a higher education learning environment that sustains scholarship encourages collaboration and empowers student learning. This article explains how to plan for a modern learning commons and presents the various components that comprise the space.

Library involvement with Campus Reading Experiences (CRE) at two community colleges and two four-year institutions are described. The case studies were chosen because each reflects a strong library presence in institutional level program planning and instructional development for deeper student learning related to the CRE. In particular, the case studies highlight the connections these programs create between librarians, student affairs, and academic affairs. Practical suggestions for how librarians can initiate this type of experience on their campus as well as advice for how librarians can take a more active role in getting involved with already existing reading programs are provided.

Recruit, Recruit, Recruit: Organizing Benefits For Employees With Unmarried Families, Polly Thistlethwaite

This article argues that librarians should work to adopt domestic partner benefits for employees in unmarried same- and opposite-sex couples given the inequities in compensation manifest in their absence. It provides new information about the domestic partner practices of Tier 1 and Tier 2 institutions based on a spring/fall 2000 telephone survey. The article includes an outline of actions to institute domestic partner benefits in university settings.

Discussion of academic libraries and the accrediting process focuses on an evaluation and comparison of library guidelines from 17 specialized accrediting bodies with guidelines from regional accreditors. Input versus output measures are discussed, and suggestions for improving the library's participation in the process are offered.

This study, commissioned by HECUS, discusses the history and structure of interlibrary cooperation throughout the country with particular attention paid to academic and intertype library consortia. The barriers to cooperation are examined. The history and present level of development of library cooperation in Connecticut are traced including a detailing of SCLS planning and activity.
