In 2014, the President of the University of Montana (UM) signed a resolution agreement with the Department of Education Office for Civil Rights regarding the accessibility of electronic and information technology (EIT) at UM. Since that time, we have been learning about accessibility and accessible technologies and have investigated the accessibility of EIT-based services at the Mansfield Library. We will share what we have learned about EIT accessibility; key results from our assessment of CONTENTdm; and a new cataloging initiative that improves the discoverability of accessible materials in library collections.

Discovery tools are used in libraries to bring together books, articles, and other resources. Research has focused on user and librarian evaluation of these tools, but there are few evaluations of non-book and non-article sources. Discovery tools can also include metadata for local collections harvested through the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH). Creating these harvests can be time consuming for staff, so it is important for libraries to understand if and how patrons use these records. Libraries have long struggled with the question of how to best classify and enable access to videorecordings. While giving a presentation at a state library conference, the authors observed from comments during the question and answer portion of the presentation that the libraries represented in the audience use a variety of video classification and organization practices. To better understand how local practices and librarians’ attitudes regarding the efficacy of these practices vary, we conducted a survey soliciting responses from librarians representing a broad array of library types.
