Making It: The Role Of School-Based Intervention In Shaping Educational Aspirations Expectations And Achievement Among High School Students, Maeve Williams

Honors Theses

In an age when higher education has become increasingly channeled as a means of gaining access to an information-driven economy, it is important to note who does and does not enroll in postsecondary courses. The American ‘achievement’ ideology touts education as an opportunity equalizer, and attributes lack of achievement in this system to individual failing. An extensive body of literature, however, points to systemic barriers which create a gap in achievement, primarily along the social fault lines of early development and family characteristics, peers and community, school environment and locational setting, and the demographic factors of race, socioeconomic class and ...

The Psychology Of Romantic Relationships, Darby Dietrich Jun 2016

The Psychology Of Romantic Relationships, Darby Dietrich

Honors Theses

Prior research on self-monitoring suggests that high self-monitors are more likely to choose a romantic partner based on status and appearance. Conversely, low self-monitors put a greater emphasis on shared values and interests. In the current research, we examined the self-monitoring differences in both dating relationships and marriages. Participants were given a survey in which they answered personal questions, questions about their past relationships, qualities that are important in potential dating and marriage partners, and the Snyder and Gangestad (1986) 18-item Self-Monitoring scale. Trends were consistent with previous research, such that high self-monitors were more likely to divorce than low ...

High Intrinsic Sensitivity Etched Polymer Fiber Bragg Grating Pair For Simultaneous Strain And Temperature Measurements, Kishore Bhowmik, Gang-Ding Peng, Yanhua Luo, Eliathamby Ambikairajah, Vedran Lovric, William R. Walsh, Ginu Rajan Jan 2016

High Intrinsic Sensitivity Etched Polymer Fiber Bragg Grating Pair For Simultaneous Strain And Temperature Measurements, Kishore Bhowmik, Gang-Ding Peng, Yanhua Luo, Eliathamby Ambikairajah, Vedran Lovric, William R. Walsh, Ginu Rajan

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A sensing configuration for simultaneous measurement of strain and temperature with enhanced intrinsic sensitivity based on a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) pair with one grating inscribed in the etched and the other in unetched polymer fiber region is demonstrated. A poly (methyl methacrylate) based single-mode polymer fiber is etched to different diameters, and it is observed that etching can lead to change in the material properties of the fiber, such as Young's modulus and thermal expansion coefficient, which can play a vital role in improving its intrinsic sensing capabilities. Thus, exploiting the different strain and temperature sensitivities exhibited by ...

Influence Of Cr-Rich Oxide Scale On Sliding Wear Mechanism Of Ferritic Stainless Steel At High Temperature, Xiawei Cheng, Zhengyi Jiang, Buyung Kosasih, Hui Wu, Suzhen Luo, Laizhu Jiang Jan 2016

Influence Of Cr-Rich Oxide Scale On Sliding Wear Mechanism Of Ferritic Stainless Steel At High Temperature, Xiawei Cheng, Zhengyi Jiang, Buyung Kosasih, Hui Wu, Suzhen Luo, Laizhu Jiang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The tribological tests of a ferritic stainless steel (FSS) 445 in contact with high-speed steel (HSS) were performed on a high-temperature pin-on-disc tribometer. Wear exhibited significant difference when the FSS 445 was oxidised with a Cr-rich oxide scale on the surface. The HSS pin displayed adhesive wear when there was no oxide scale on the stainless steel disc, and in the early stages, the coefficient of friction fluctuated significantly, but the level of wear changed as Cr2O3 particles formed. The wear was then reduced, and the coefficient of friction remained stable. The Cr-rich oxide scale which formed on the stainless ...

Robustness Of Ipsa Optimized High-Dose-Rate Prostate Brachytherapy Treatment Plans To Catheter Displacements, Joel Poder, May Whitaker Jan 2016

Robustness Of Ipsa Optimized High-Dose-Rate Prostate Brachytherapy Treatment Plans To Catheter Displacements, Joel Poder, May Whitaker

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Purpose: Inverse planning simulated annealing (IPSA) optimized brachytherapy treatment plans are characterized with large isolated dwell times at the first or last dwell position of each catheter. The potential of catheter shifts relative to the target and organs at risk in these plans may lead to a more significant change in delivered dose to the volumes of interest relative to plans with more uniform dwell times. Material and methods: This study aims to determine if the Nucletron Oncentra dwell time deviation constraint (DTDC) parameter can be optimized to improve the robustness of high-dose-rate (HDR) prostate brachytherapy plans to catheter displacements ...

High Temperature Postsynthetic Rearrangement Of Dimethylthiocarbamate-Functionalized Metal-Organic Frameworks, Timothy Ablott, Marc Turzer, Shane Telfer, Christopher Richardson Jan 2016

High Temperature Postsynthetic Rearrangement Of Dimethylthiocarbamate-Functionalized Metal-Organic Frameworks, Timothy Ablott, Marc Turzer, Shane Telfer, Christopher Richardson

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

A thermally promoted postsynthetic rearrangement has been performed on a zinc IRMOF-9-type framework bearing dimethylthiocarbamate tag groups. The rearrangement was accomplished via conventional heating at 285 °C. Crucially, despite the high temperature, the MOF maintains its high accessible surface area and pore space following thermal treatment. The structures and physical properties of the frameworks were characterized by a combination of single-crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, differential thermal-thermogravimetric analysis, and gas sorption analysis. The rearrangement results in a slightly higher level of CO2 adsorption for the modified MOF but with equivalent heat of adsorption. This work offers new perspectives ...

A Strategy For Configuration Of An Integrated Flexible Sulfur Cathode For High-Performance Lithium-Sulfur Batteries, Hongqiang Wang, Wenchao Zhang, Hua-Kun Liu, Zaiping Guo

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Lithium-sulfur batteries are regarded as promising candidates for energy storage devices owing to their high theoretical energy density. The practical application is hindered, however, by low sulfur utilization and unsatisfactory capacity retention. Herein, we present a strategy for configuration of the sulfur cathode, which is composed of an integrated carbon/sulfur/carbon sandwich structure on polypropylene separator that is produced using the simple doctor-blade technique. The integrated electrode exhibits excellent flexibility and high mechanical strength. The upper and bottom carbon layers of the sandwich-structured electrode not only work as double current collectors, which effectively improve the conductivity of the electrode ...

Hydrostatic Compression Behavior And High-Pressure Stabilized Β-Phase In Γ-Based Titanium Aluminide Intermetallics, Klaus-Dieter Liss, Ken-Ichi Funakoshi, Rian J. Dippenaar, Yuji Higo, Ayumi Shiro, Mark H. Reid, Hiroshi Suzuki, Takahisa Shobu, Koichi Akita

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Titanium aluminides find application in modern light-weight, high-temperature turbines, such as aircraft engines, but suffer from poor plasticity during manufacturing and processing. Huge forging presses enable materials processing in the 10-GPa range, and hence, it is necessary to investigate the phase diagrams of candidate materials under these extreme conditions. Here, we report on an in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction study in a large-volume press of a modern (α2 + γ) two-phase material, Ti-45Al-7.5Nb-0.25C, under pressures up to 9.6 GPa and temperatures up to 1686 K. At room temperature, the volume response to pressure is accommodated by the transformation ...

Analysis Of Bacterial Diversity In Two Oil Blocks From Two Low-Permeability Reservoirs With High Salinities, Meng Xiao, Shan Shan Sun, Zhong Zhi Zhang, Junming Wang, Long Wei Qiu, Hua Yang Sun, Zhaozheng Song, Beiyu Zhang, De Li Gao, Guangqing Zhang, Wei Min Wu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The community diversities of two oil reservoirs with low permeability of 1.81 x 10 '3 and 2.29 x 10 '3 1/4m 2 in Changqing, China, were investigated using a high throughput sequencing technique to analyze the influence of biostimulation with a nutrient activator on the bacterial communities. These two blocks differed significantly in salinity (average 17,500 vs 40,900 mg/L). A core simulation test was used to evaluate the effectiveness of indigenous microbial-enhanced oil recovery (MEOR). The results indicated that in the two high salinity oil reservoirs, one reservoir having relatively lower salinity level and ...

Confined Sno2 Quantum-Dot Clusters In Graphene Sheets As High-Performance Anodes For Lithium-Ion Batteries, Chengling Zhu, Shenmin Zhu, Kai Zhang, Zeyu Hui, Hui Pan, Zhixin Chen, Yao Li, Di Zhang, Dawei Wang Jan 2016

Confined Sno2 Quantum-Dot Clusters In Graphene Sheets As High-Performance Anodes For Lithium-Ion Batteries, Chengling Zhu, Shenmin Zhu, Kai Zhang, Zeyu Hui, Hui Pan, Zhixin Chen, Yao Li, Di Zhang, Dawei Wang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Construction of metal oxide nanoparticles as anodes is of special interest for next-generation lithium-ion batteries. The main challenge lies in their rapid capacity fading caused by the structural degradation and instability of solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer during charge/discharge process. Herein, we address these problems by constructing a novel-structured SnO2-based anode. The novel structure consists of mesoporous clusters of SnO2 quantum dots (SnO2 QDs), which are wrapped with reduced graphene oxide (RGO) sheets. The mesopores inside the clusters provide enough room for the expansion and contraction of SnO2 QDs during charge/discharge process while the ...

The Struggle For Legitimacy: Language Provision In Two 'Residual' Comprehensive High Schools In Australia, Stephen Black, Jan Wright, Kenneth E. Cruickshank Jan 2016

The Struggle For Legitimacy: Language Provision In Two 'Residual' Comprehensive High Schools In Australia, Stephen Black, Jan Wright, Kenneth E. Cruickshank

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers

Despite the contemporary policy rhetoric of global citizenry and the importance of languages and intercultural capabilities, language learning in Australian schools struggles for recognition and support. The curriculum marginalisation of languages, however, is uneven, affecting some school sectors more than others. In this article, we examine the provision of languages in two government comprehensive high schools, both low socio-economic status, located in urban areas in New South Wales, Australia's largest state. They are termed 'residual' high schools because they cater for the students remaining in the local schools while others attend either private or selective government high schools. We ...

Cognitive And Oculomotor Performance In Subjects With Low And High Schizotypy: Implications For Translational Drug Development Studies, Ivan Koychev, D Joyce, Emma Barkus, Ulrich Ettinger, Anne Schmechtig, Colin Dourish, Gerard Dawson, Kevin Craig, John Francis Deakin Jan 2016

Cognitive And Oculomotor Performance In Subjects With Low And High Schizotypy: Implications For Translational Drug Development Studies, Ivan Koychev, D Joyce, Emma Barkus, Ulrich Ettinger, Anne Schmechtig, Colin Dourish, Gerard Dawson, Kevin Craig, John Francis Deakin

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers

The development of drugs to improve cognition in patients with schizophrenia is a major unmet clinical need. A number of promising compounds failed in recent clinical trials, a pattern linked to poor translation between preclinical and clinical stages of drug development. Seeking proof of efficacy in early Phase 1 studies in surrogate patient populations (for example, high schizotypy individuals where subtle cognitive impairment is present) has been suggested as a strategy to reduce attrition in the later stages of drug development. However, there is little agreement regarding the pattern of distribution of schizotypal features in the general population, creating uncertainty ...

High Temperature Oxidation Of Indefinite Chill Roll Material Under Dry And Humid Atmospheres, Liang Hao, Zhengyi Jiang, Zhixin Chen, Dongbin Wei, Xiawei Cheng, Jingwei Zhao, Ming Luo, Li Ma, Suzhen Luo, Laizhu Jiang Jan 2016

High Temperature Oxidation Of Indefinite Chill Roll Material Under Dry And Humid Atmospheres, Liang Hao, Zhengyi Jiang, Zhixin Chen, Dongbin Wei, Xiawei Cheng, Jingwei Zhao, Ming Luo, Li Ma, Suzhen Luo, Laizhu Jiang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

In this paper, the isothermal oxidation of the indefinite chill (IC) roll is investigated by using a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) from 550 to 700 °C under dry and humid atmospheres. It is found that the oxidation kinetics follow a linear trend and the oxide scale consists of two layers after the oxidation in dry air but three layers in humid air above 600 °C. In dry air, the graphite is covered by the oxide scale above 650 °C. The water vapor accelerates the oxidation of the matrix and the graphite. The graphite is covered by the extension of the oxide ...
