Background: Cannabis use has been identified as a possible risk factor for developing schizophrenia. In a previous paper we reported preliminary evidence that cannabis use increases the likelihood of psychosis-like experiences in non-clinical respondents who scored highly on a measure of schizotypy. We now present findings from pooled data from 3 new follow-up studies comprising a sample of 477 respondents, of whom 332 reported using cannabis at least once. Sampling and Methods: As in our previous study, the psychological effects of cannabis were assessed with the Cannabis Experiences Questionnaire, from which 3 subscales can be derived; encompassing pleasurable experiences, psychosis-like …

Palaeoproterozoic And Archaean Gneiss Complexes In Northern Greenland: Palaeoproterozoic Terrane Assembly In The High Arctic, Allen Phillip Nutman, Peter Dawes, Feiko Kalsbeek, Mike Hamilton

The Precambrian shield of northern Greenland has been investigated by SHRIMP U-Pb zircon dating of 14 orthogneisses and granitoids plus 5 metasediments, integrated with mapping by the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland and whole-rock Nd isotopic studies. The Inglefield Mobile Belt is a tract of Palaeoproterozoic sedimentation, plutonism, polyphase deformation and high-grade metamorphism that underlies Inglefield Land and northern Prudhoe Land. In the southern part of the belt at 78 degrees 30'N, the E-W-trending Sunrise Pynt Straight Belt is a high-grade, but structurally late, shear zone with contrasts in the geology on either side. South of the Sunrise Pynt …

High Resolution Analysis Of Uranium And Thorium Concentration As Well As U-Series Isotope Distributions In A Neanderthal Tooth From Payre (Ardeche, France) Using Laser Ablation Icp-Ms, R. Grun, Maxime Aubert, Renaud C. Joannes-Boyau, M-H Moncel Jan 2008

We have mapped U (238U) and Th (232Th) elemental concentrations as well as U-series isotope distributions in a Neanderthal tooth from the Middle Palaeolithic site of Payre using laser ablation ICP-MS. The U-concentrations in an enamel section varied between 1 and 1500 ppb. The U-concentration maps show that U-migration through the external enamel surface is minute, the bulk of the uranium having migrated internally via the dentine into the enamel. The uranium migration and uptake is critically dependent on the mineralogical structure of the enamel. Increased U-concentrations are observed along lineaments, some of which are associated with cracks, and others …

High Spatial Resolution Fibre -Optic Fizeau Interferometric Strain Sensor Based On An In-Fiber Spherical Microcavity, Enbang Li, Gang-Ding Peng, Xin Ding Jan 2008

High Spatial Resolution Fibre -Optic Fizeau Interferometric Strain Sensor Based On An In-Fiber Spherical Microcavity, Enbang Li, Gang-Ding Peng, Xin Ding

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We present a fiber-optic Fizeau interferometric strain sensor consisting of an in-fiber spherical microcavity of 39um in diameter. The spherical microcavity was formed by splicing a normal single-mode fiber with a hollow-core photonic crystal fiber. We demonstrate that strain sensing can be realized by using the interference between the light signals reflected by the front and rear surfaces of the sphere. Experiments have shown that the strain sensor has a strain sensitivity of 3.36um/ue and a temperature sensitivity of 1.35um/°C.

Development Of Hydraulic Fracturing In High Stress Conditions In Australian Underground Coal Mines, Dennis John Black, Naj Aziz Jan 2008

Development Of Hydraulic Fracturing In High Stress Conditions In Australian Underground Coal Mines, Dennis John Black, Naj Aziz

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Hydraulic fracturing has been used extensively in the petroleum and coalbed methane industries as a means of improving access to the reservoir and thereby enhancing production. In the Australian coal mining industry there has been an aversion to the use of hydraulic fracturing. One of the main reasons for the lack of application of this technology has been the perceived risk of damage to the strata and the resulting impact on future mining operations. A number of Australian mines are progressing toward areas where gas drainage is becoming increasingly difficult and these mines are seriously considering the use of hydraulic …
