Previous research has shown that front-of-pack labels (FoPLs) can assist people to make healthier food choices if they are easy to understand and people are motivated to use them. There is some evidence that FoPLs providing an assessment of a food's health value (evaluative FoPLs) are easier to use than those providing only numerical information on nutrients (reductive FoPLs). Recently, a new evaluative FoPL (the Health Star Rating (HSR)) has been introduced to Australia and New Zealand. The HSR features a summary indicator, differentiating it from many other FoPLs being used around the world. The aim of this study was …

Objective: To compare two front-of-pack nutrition labelling systems for the assessment of packaged foods and drinks with Australian Dietary Guidelines. Design: A cross-sectional nutrient profiling assessment. Food and drink products (n 20 225) were categorised into scoring levels using criteria for the Institute of Medicine (IOM) three-star system and the five-star Australian Health Star Rating (HSR). The effectiveness of these systems to categorise foods in accordance with Australian Dietary Guidelines was explored. Setting: The study was conducted in Australia, using a comprehensive food database. Subjects: Packaged food and drink products (n 20 225) available in Australia. Results: Using the IOM …

The other day, my toddler son came home from childcare saying "piss poo". He is one of the younger children in his classroom and clearly he heard this phrase from an older child he admired. I couldn't help laughing at this unexpected outburst, which reinforced this behaviour - thus cementing the phrase in his emerging vocabulary. Now he goes around muttering "piss poo piss poo pissy poo" under his breath as he goes about his business. Is this a bad thing? Should I scold him for using words he doesn't know the meaning of? Should I discourage him from using …

Curvature Flows And Barriers In Fire Front Modelling, Valentina-Mira Wheeler, James A. Mccoy, Glen Wheeler, J J. Sharples Jan 2013

Curvature Flows And Barriers In Fire Front Modelling, Valentina-Mira Wheeler, James A. Mccoy, Glen Wheeler, J J. Sharples

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this paper we propose a novel mathematical model for describing the evolution of a fire front. Specifically, for a homogeneous fuel bed of varying height with constant ignition temperature Tig we model the isosurface corresponding to Tig . The intersection of this isosurface with the fuel bed defines the evolving front. There are three natural processes driving the evolution of the evolving front: radiative heat transfer, convective heat transfer, and heat/mass transfer. These processes clearly depend on the shape of the isosurface in space, and this nonlinear feedback can be understood through the curvature of the isosurface. The model …

The placement of nutrition information on the front of food packages has been proposed as a method of providing simplified and visible nutrition information. This study aimed to determine the most acceptable and effective front-of-pack food labelling system for Australian consumers. Consumers' preferences and ability to compare the healthiness of mock food products were assessed for different front-of-pack labelling systems. Four systems were tested, including two variations of the Percentage Daily Intake (%DI) system (Monochrome %DI and Colour-Coded %DI), which display the proportion of daily nutrient contribution that a serve of food provides; and two variations of the Traffic Light …

This study aimed to measure the extent of use of front-of-pack daily intake (DI) labelling across food categories in Australian supermarkets, and assess the level of compliance with the Australian Food and Grocery Council (AFGC) guidelines. Surveys of six supermarkets in the Illawarra region of New South Wales were conducted twice a year in 2007, 2008 and 2009. The number of products with DI labelling increased from 58 in February 2007 to 1939 in August 2009 and appears to be growing strongly. The greatest number of products with the labelling are in the biscuits and crackers, cooking sauces, breakfast cereals, …

Planning At The Urban Periphery In Australia: Issues Relating To Private Residential Back And Front Yards, Andrew H. Kelly Jan 2009

Planning At The Urban Periphery In Australia: Issues Relating To Private Residential Back And Front Yards, Andrew H. Kelly

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

This narrative focuses on three planning issues affecting the suburban residential periphery in Sydney, Australia: (i) amenity, (ii) biodiversity conservation and (iii) bushfire potential. All relate to private front and back yards, which provide key elements of the residential landscape. Embedded in the paper is the complexity of the planning system and the subsequent inconsistency between dealing with the three issues. Considerable attention is paid to local government and its changing legislative terrain. In particular, several local statutory planning instruments are investigated to illustrate this. The conclusion calls for further research while stressing more action is warranted within and outside …

MARRYING OUT: 11 and 18 October 2009 Hindsight, ABC Radio National Part 1, 11 October 2009

A woman is denied a deathbed visit to her father. A couple’s honeymoon vehicle runs off the road, sabotaged. Children practise their faith in secret. A quarter of the population is barred from applying for jobs.

The cause: religion. The place: Australia. The time: until the 1960s.

Just two generations ago, before the term multiculturalism became the norm, Australian society was polarised between two main groups: Protestants and Catholics. Religion was code for identity, with tensions fuelled by historical grievances that dated back long …
