Feeling The Heat: Heterogeneous Treatment Effects Of Heat On Human Cooperation, Scott K. Klaus

Master's Theses

The goal of this paper is to examine how increased temperatures affect human behavior in terms of cooperation. Currently, there is an abundance of literature regarding increased aggression in humans as temperatures rise. However, there is ambiguity concerning whether a similar effect exists in altering levels of cooperation in human interactions. Additionally, people of different characteristics may be influenced by heat at varying levels. First, we run a baseline model of prosociality on different heat measurements, such as standard and wet-bulb temperatures. Included in this model are experimental specification variables, a “trigger”, and characteristics. The trigger is defined as losing …

Minimum Wages In China: Evolution, Legislation, And Effects, Shi Li, Carl Lin

Faculty Books

This book considers the positive and negative impacts of the minimum wage policy in China. Since China enacted its first minimum wage law in 1994, the magnitude and frequency of changes in the minimum wage have been substantial, both over time and across jurisdictions. The results from China’s experience show that rapidly increasing minimum wages have helped increase average wages and reduce the gender wage gap, income inequality, and poverty. However, the fast-rising minimum wage has also resulted in the loss of employment for young adults, women, low-skilled workers, and migrant workers. Additionally, higher minimum wages have a negative impact …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Non-GPS localization has gained much interest from researchers and industries recently because GPS might fail to meet the accuracy requirements in shadowing environments. The two most common range-based non-GPS localization methods, namely Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) and Angle-of-Arrival (AOA), have been intensively mentioned in the literature over the last decade. However, an in-depth analysis of the weighted combination methods of AOA and RSSI in shadowing environments is still missing in the state-of-the-art. This paper proposes several weighted combinations of the two RSSI and AOA components in the form of pAOA + qRSSI, devises the mathematical model for analyzing shadowing …

Dual Effects Of Tisio4composite Nanoparticles On Dispersionstability And Lubrication Performance Of Vegetable Oil‐In‐Water Emulsions, Reza Taheri, Buyung Kosasih, Hongtao Zhu, Anh Kiet Tieu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Vegetable oil-in-water emulsions are potential metal-working lubricants. These emulsions are susceptible to oil-water phase separation due to the oil droplets' coalescence. In this study, we enhance the dispersion stability and lubricity of such emulsions with TiSiO4 nanoparticles (NPs). With 1 vol% soybean oil, stable emulsions are obtained with 0.25 to 0.75 wt% NPs, attributed to formation of shielding layers of NPs around the droplets. Lowest friction and wear are obtained without and with 0.25 wt% NPs, respectively. With increasing the NPs' mass fraction, NP-shielded droplets become less attracted to metal surfaces. Association of NPs within boundary film is also found …

The Effects Of Nicotine On Maladaptive Alcohol Drinking, Isabella Stuart Jan 2018

The Effects Of Nicotine On Maladaptive Alcohol Drinking, Isabella Stuart

Research on Capitol Hill

  • Impulsivity is defined as choosing a smaller-sooner choice over a more rational larger-later choice.
  • Most delay discounting studies only investigate magnitude differences in the same reward.
  • Cross-commodity discounting consists of providing the opportunity for subjects to choose between a low quality reward that is available almost immediately and a higher quality reward that is available at a time delay. We will model this in an animal model with rats who have a choice between a relatively small amount of alcohol immediately and a relatively large amount of food at a delay.
