"For a lot of people, particularly in Western culture, what is commonly seen are business and managerial forms of leadership. there is nothing wrong with that, but christian leadership is different. Leadership is something that needs to be practiced. Leadership needs to have a reflective side. A christian leader must take time to think, consider, and have a period of quietness rather than just making quick decisions. A christian leader must be reflective and learn to listen to god. this is a key part of spirituality."

The dissertation is a deep study of an iconic 20^th century female, African American leader whose acclaim developed not only from her remarkable first generation post-Reconstruction Era beginnings, but also from her mid-century visibility among Negroes and some Whites as a principal spokesperson for her people. This research examined one large health system that has, through a stated mission outcome that every encounter is a sacred encounter, sought to enhance relationships occurring within the health care environment. Seeking to understand the lived experience of sacred encounters through the lens of nurse leaders in one acute care hospital settings this study examined how nurse leaders experienced their leadership role in realizing sacred encounters. Participants were defined as nurse leaders from one hospital setting and included nurse managers, directors and one vice president.
