Forget Gate Counts: Assessing Transformative Programming, John M. Jackson Nov 2016

Forget Gate Counts: Assessing Transformative Programming, John M. Jackson

John M. Jackson

One of the five strategic goals of the William H. Hannon Library is to contribute to “formative and transformative
education of the whole person through outreach and programming.” Through events such as the annual Haunting
of Hannon, the Hannon Human Library, and the Spring Women’s Voices series, the library outreach team at
Loyola Marymount University seeks to create experiences that reach beyond connecting students to information
resources and highlight the library as a transformative force in student life. Measuring the success of these
experiences requires targeted evaluation methods similar to those used for library instruction. This presentation
will outline the …

In 2016, the Canadian loonie fell to 77% of the U.S. dollar, creating unexpected financial challenges for collections management. Examining usage statistics was the clear first place to start when evaluating resources for cancellation - but would data-driven decisions based purely on cost per use be adequate?

In this joint presentation by Western University and EBSCO Information Services, we will look beyond cost per use, and focus on how Western built on the "big deal" analysis work initiated by the University de Montreal, adding a journal overlap analysis and home-grown method of performing citation analysis using Web of Science and …

Addressing Microaggressions: Transgressing The Line Between Professional And Social Activism, Karla Scott, Victoria Defrancisco, Maureen Ebben

Maureen Ebben

The focus of this workshop is the often overlooked day-to-day wearing down of people in oppressed groups as recipients of microaggressions. While most who are sympathetic to this problem know what a microaggression is, faculty, staff and students tend to fear addressing such aggressions. They simply may not know how to do so effectively. In this hands-on workshop participants will grapple with specific scenarios and be invited to try out different communicative responses and other tools to work toward creating a more inclusive climate for all. The workshop comes from an intersectional feminist perspective, shinning a light on oppressive behaviors …

Informed Learning, Information Literacy, And Scholarly Communication: Library Pedagogy As A Bridge To The Disciplines, Kim L. Ranger Oct 2016

Informed Learning, Information Literacy, And Scholarly Communication: Library Pedagogy As A Bridge To The Disciplines, Kim L. Ranger

Kim L. Ranger

This paper explores collaboration between librarians and faculty in higher education to construct connections between informed learning theory, information literacy practice, and disciplinary scholarly products to foster reflective and deep engagement with information.

Increasing digital innovations in communication and pedagogy, the need for various literacy capabilities, and the potential wisdom gained from considering diverse methodological perspectives have driven the need for interdisciplinary collaboration (Witt, 2012). There have also been several calls for a relational approach to teaching and learning, changing the roles of librarians (Farrell and Badke, 2015; Gunton et al, 2014; Jaguszewski and Williams, 2013), and scholarship which examines …

Evaluating Scholarly Communication Services And Programs To Plan For Sustained Success, Jacklyn Rander, Matt Ruen Aug 2016

Evaluating Scholarly Communication Services And Programs To Plan For Sustained Success, Jacklyn Rander, Matt Ruen

Jacklyn Rander

The scholarly communications program and institutional repository at Grand Valley State University began in 2008, and in its first seven years, grew rapidly. Our team, recently-expanded, now includes three full time positions, and through our repository we host open textbooks, open-access journals, and thousands of documents. Our initial growth was organic and opportunistic, which enabled this initiative to successfully take root in the University Libraries. The next challenge for our scholarly communications program is to make sure those early roots are strong and healthy, so that we can sustain our initial success through the next seven years and beyond.

Growing The Vision: Next Steps For Open Access Library Publishing, Shawn Martin Jul 2016

Growing The Vision: Next Steps For Open Access Library Publishing, Shawn Martin

Shawn Martin

How can (or should) institutional repositories, disciplinary websites, data warehouses, and other open access repositories form part of a larger strategy for library publishing?  In the age of linked data and the semantic web, open access repositories might seem to be the first step toward solving a much larger problem, namely, creating a research management infrastructure that helps to assess the impact, productivity, and use of resources online.   Yet, the answer to how library publishing units should accomplish linking research management practices and open access publishing mechanisms remains elusive.

There are two ways of trying to achieve the solution.  First, …

Desert Or Oasis: Reflecting On Teaching And Tweaking A Discovery Layer., Vera J. Lux, Amy F. Fyn, Robert J. Snyder Jun 2016

Desert Or Oasis: Reflecting On Teaching And Tweaking A Discovery Layer., Vera J. Lux, Amy F. Fyn, Robert J. Snyder

Vera J Lux

Implementing and customizing a discovery layer affects not only users but also instruction librarians. To address the teaching implications, librarians from our mid-sized state university engaged in reflective practice to adjust our instruction methods in one-shot sessions. This self-assessment led us to questions about which potential discovery layer customizations would best meet users’ needs. For this reason, we surveyed users regarding their preferences in managing discovery layer results.  Presenters will share the benefits received from the reflective practice, provide the results of our librarian and user assessments, and discuss how these informed our teaching and tweaking of the discovery layer.

Academic Librarian Research: An Update To A Survey Of Attitudes, Involvement, And Perceived Capabilities, Kristine R. Brancolini, Marie R. Kennedy

Kristine R. Brancolini

This presentation updates a 2010 survey of academic librarians about their attitudes, involvement, and perceived capabilities utilizing and engaging in research. The purpose of the 2010 survey was to inform the development of a continuing education program in research design, which became the grant-funded project Institute for Research Design in Librarianship (2013-2016).  The 2010 survey introduced a research self-efficacy scale designed to measure the relationship between confidence and research success.  This scale provided new insights regarding how prepared librarians believe themselves to be with regard to conducting research.  The current study re-examines a number of the individual attributes and institutional …

Combining Faculty, Instructional Design, And Library Services To Provide Students A Framework For Information Evaluation, Linda Leake, Samantha Mcclellan

Samantha McClellan

The creation of the course-embedded Critical Thinking & information Evaluation Module series resulted from the need for undergraduate students to start their academic careers with a framework for evaluating information. Pulling from the Paul-Elder Critical Thinking Framework and focusing abstract information literacy concepts on the commonly-used resources of Wikipedia, Google, and scholarly journal articles, the presenters will delve into module creation to implementation of these modules and discuss the logistics of this process to guide other faculty-librarian-instruction designer collaborations.

How many times have you participated in this scenario?

Student: I can’t find this article in the databases (she shows you a citation).
You: Oh, this citation is for a book. Let’s check the catalog.

Helping students understand citations seems to be an on-going activity, but learning about citations can be boring and requires attention to detail. In order to address this problem, we created a fun tutorial using drag-and-drop technology that can be used in an online environment or in the classroom. The tutorial helps students identify the elements of a citation, place them in the correct order, and …

The Art Of Discovery: Helping Students Find Inspiration In Unlikely Places, Kelly Grey Carlisle, Anne Jumonville Graf

Anne Jumonville Graf

How can an "old space" like Special Collections be repurposed to meet evolving information literacy learning goals? This presentation will address ways in which a traditional library space can be reimagined as a place to engage students in affective learning at the beginning of the research process. By crafting activities for students that emphasize exploration and open-ended discovery, librarians and faculty can help students slow down and approach research more creatively. In the session, we (two librarians and a teaching faculty member) will share specific outcomes, activities, and the results of our assessments. Participants will: Understand the importance of affective …
