The Impact Of Parental Drinking On Children's Use Of Health Care, Michael T. French, Ana I. Balsa Dec 2011

The Impact Of Parental Drinking On Children's Use Of Health Care, Michael T. French, Ana I. Balsa

Michael T. French

While a significant body of literature documents the health problems of children caused by and/or associated with parental alcohol misuse, little research has been conducted on the relationship between parental problem drinking and children's use of health care. We should expect to see an increase in children's health care if alcohol-misusing parents were responsive to their children's higher physical and mental health needs. Contrarily, it would decrease (conditional on health status) if alcohol-misusing parents were irresponsive to those needs. Analyzing a nationally representative sample of parents and children, we find a positive and significant association between parental high intensity drinking …

Early Maternal Withdrawal And Nonverbal Childhood Iq As Precursors For Substance Use Disorder In Young Adulthood: Results Of A 20-Year Prospective Study, Pia Pechtel, Ashley C. Woodman, Karlen Lyons-Ruth Dec 2011

Early Maternal Withdrawal And Nonverbal Childhood Iq As Precursors For Substance Use Disorder In Young Adulthood: Results Of A 20-Year Prospective Study, Pia Pechtel, Ashley C. Woodman, Karlen Lyons-Ruth

Ashley C. Woodman

The relation between early mother–infant interaction and later socio-emotional development has been well established. The present study addresses the more recent interest in the impact of maternal caregiving on cognitive development and their role in decision-making in young adulthood. Using data from a prospective longitudinal study on attachment, prediction from early mother–infant interactions at age 18 months and from verbal and nonverbal cognitive skill at age 5 were examined as predictors of a substance use disorder (abuse/dependence) in young adulthood (age 20) on the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID). Results reveal that the mother’s withdrawal from interaction with the …

Sociology By Any Other Name: Teaching The Sociological Perspective In Campus Diversity Programs, Meghan A. Burke, Kira Hudson Banks Dec 2011

Sociology By Any Other Name: Teaching The Sociological Perspective In Campus Diversity Programs, Meghan A. Burke, Kira Hudson Banks

Meghan A. Burke

This article suggests that the way in to sociology may not always be through the front door. The authors demonstrate how students in a three-day campus diversity program develop a sociological imagination despite not having a formal affiliation with the sociology department. In particular, students demonstrate a move from color blindness into racial consciousness and a shift from individual prejudice into institutional privilege when understanding both diversity issues and their own personal biographies. In short, despite not knowing the phrase, they develop a sociological imagination. While the goal is not to diminish the significance of traditional sociology classrooms, the authors …

Game On At The Library, Teresa A. Slobuski

Teresa A. Slobuski

The Games and Gaming at the Library Round Table (GameRT) is new to the ALA Round Ta-ble scene this Midwinter. Previously, librarians interested in gaming bonded over discussion groups or out of conference session time. With the increasing popularity of National Gaming Day @ your Library, an increasing number of libraries collecting games, and innovative gamification projects, a fully fledged Round Table has been born.

The Role Of ‘Workplace Family’ Support On Worker Health, Exhaustion And Pain, Linda A. Treiber, Shannon N. Davis Dec 2011

The Role Of ‘Workplace Family’ Support On Worker Health, Exhaustion And Pain, Linda A. Treiber, Shannon N. Davis

Linda A. Treiber

The goal of this study was to improve understanding of the potential health benefits of social support at work. We utilized 2002 GSS data to examine the relative influence of workplace support on self-reported health, exhaustion and experience of persistent pain in a sample of 1602 workers. Building on previous Demand-Control-Support models, we examined co-worker, supervisor, and organizational safety support (conceptualized as ‘workplace family’) in concert with job demands, job control and work-family conflict as predictors of worker health measures. We further tested the extent to which work-family conflict acted as a mediator between family and work characteristics and worker …

Finna As A Socially-Meaningful Quasi-Modal In African American English, Julia Thomas, Timothy Grinsell Dec 2011

Finna As A Socially-Meaningful Quasi-Modal In African American English, Julia Thomas, Timothy Grinsell

Julia Thomas Swan

This paper provides both a formal and a descriptive account of the preverbal marker finna in African American English (AAE). The analysis fills 2 gaps in the literature: the general paucity of research on formal semantics in AAE and the under-developed integration of formal semantic meaning with social meaning for dialectal variants. Using lyrics from hip-hop and rap songs, this work examines 90 tokens of the pre-verbal marker finna (also seen as fitna and finta). The data suggest that finna behaves like a performative modal in AAE, giving rise to a proximate future interpretation (following Ninan 2005, Kaufmann 2012). This …

Age-Concordant And Age-Discordant Sexual Behavior Among Gay And Bisexual Male Adolescents, Douglas Bruce, Gary W. Harper, M Isabel Fernández, Omar B. Jamil, The Atn

Douglas Bruce

There is evidence that risks for HIV and sexually transmitted infections among adolescent females are higher for those with older male sexual partners. Yet, little empirical research has been conducted with male adolescents who engage in sexual activity with older men. In this article, we summarize in a number of ways the range of sexual activity reported by an ethnically diverse sample of 200 gay and bisexual male youth (15–22 years old) in Chicago and Miami. A general pattern of progression from oral sex with men to both receptive and insertive anal sex with men appeared to characterize the sample …

Rehabilitating Lawyers: Perceptions Of Deviance And Its Cures In The Lawyer Reinstatement Process, Bruce A. Green, Jane Moriarty Dec 2011

Rehabilitating Lawyers: Perceptions Of Deviance And Its Cures In The Lawyer Reinstatement Process, Bruce A. Green, Jane Moriarty

Jane Campbell Moriarty

State courts’ approach to lawyer admissions and discipline has not changed fundamentally in the past century. Courts still place faith in the idea that “moral character” is a stable trait that reliably predicts whether an individual will be honest in any given situation. Although research in neuroscience, cognitive science, psychiatry, research psychology, and behavioral economics (collectively “cognitive and social science”) has influenced prevailing concepts of personality and trustworthiness, courts to date have not considered whether they might change or refine their approach to “moral character” in light of scientific insights. This Article examines whether courts should reevaluate how they decide …

Sprawl In Canada And The United States, Michael Lewyn Dec 2011

Sprawl In Canada And The United States, Michael Lewyn

Michael E Lewyn

The purpose of this Article is to ascertain whether (1) suburban sprawl is as widespread in Canadian metropolitan areas as in their American counterparts, and (2) Canadian government policies, and in particular Canadian zoning law and transportation policies, encourage sprawl. The article concludes that Canadian metropolitan areas are in fact somewhat less sprawling than most of their American counterparts, but that in Canada, as in the United States, government land use regulation and government transportation policy do favor sprawl to some extent. For example, in both nations municipal zoning regulations, by limiting density and forcing landowners to build parking lots, …

Violence, Racial, Carolyn M. West Dec 2011

Violence, Racial, Carolyn M. West

Carolyn M. West

Many enslaved women experienced a lifetime of racial violence. Due to the social and historical constructions of race, black women often endured physical violence, sexual assault (including rape, forced breeding, and the manipulation of their reproductive lives), and even race-based medical experimentation.

Trust Or Bust?: Questioning The Relationship Between Media Trust And News Attention, Ann E. Williams Dec 2011

Trust Or Bust?: Questioning The Relationship Between Media Trust And News Attention, Ann E. Williams

Ann E Williams

This article establishes the theoretical significance of media trust and explores the relationships between individuals' levels of media trust and news attention. Three distinct types of media trust are introduced: 1) trust of news information, 2) trust of those who deliver the news, and 3) trust of media corporations. The findings indicate that these different types of media trust relate to news attention in distinct ways, specifically when examined across medium. The theoretical significance of the findings are discussed and contextualized in light of an evolving media environment.

Faculty Views On The Appropriateness Of Teaching Undergraduate Psychology Courses Online.Pdf, Jana Michelle Hackathorn

Jana Hackathorn

This study examines faculty views concerning the appropriateness of teaching specific undergraduate psychology courses in an online format. Faculty express concern about teaching methodology and counseling/clinical content courses online, but endorse teaching introductory and nonclinical content courses in either format; faculty report diverse views on the extent to which capstone and integrative experiences in psychology can be facilitated in a virtual format. The implications of these findings are discussed in relation to the growing demand for online psychology course offerings.

Examining Exam Reviews.Pdf, Jana Michelle Hackathorn Dec 2011

Examining Exam Reviews.Pdf, Jana Michelle Hackathorn

Jana Hackathorn

Instructors commonly use exam reviews to help students prepare for exams and to increase student success. The current study compared the effects of traditional, trivia, and practice test- based exam reviews on actual exam scores, as well as students’ attitudes toward each review.  Findings suggested that students’ exam scores were significantly higher for the exams following both a traditional review and a trivia review than for the exam following the practice test review.  Immediately after the review, three attitude measures (i.e. confidence, feeling prepared, and helpfulness of review) were lowest after the traditional review.  Finally, immediately after taking the exam, …

Semantics (Prospective Syllabus), Adam Hodges Dec 2011

Semantics (Prospective Syllabus), Adam Hodges

Adam Hodges

A primary reason for using language is, of course, to convey meaning from one interlocutor to another. But how does language convey meaning? How does language structure contribute to meaning? How does context shape meaning? How do linguists talk about and analyze meaning? In this course, we will examine basic concepts, theories, and analytical techniques used by contemporary linguists in the study of meaning in natural language. Students will gain practice with different types of semantic analyses through assignments and problem sets. The goals of the course are (1) to provide a grounding in semantics as a sub-field of linguistics, …

Income Polarization, Convergence Tools And Mixture Analysis, Michele Battisti, Christopher Parmeter Dec 2011

Income Polarization, Convergence Tools And Mixture Analysis, Michele Battisti, Christopher Parmeter

Christopher F. Parmeter

Modeling the cross-country distribution of per capita using mixture analysis provides a natural platform for the recovery or detection of clubs of countries. Unfortunately, these mixture methods, when based on a strictly univariate approach are limiting towards one's ability to learn about the underlying process of the emergence of the clubs. This paper takes a fresh look at the sources contributing to the emergence of clubs in the distribution of cross-country output using bivariate and multivariate mixture analysis.

Cartelizing Taxes: Understanding The Oecd’S Campaign Against “Harmful Tax Competition”, Lotta Moberg, Andrew P. Morriss Dec 2011

Cartelizing Taxes: Understanding The Oecd’S Campaign Against “Harmful Tax Competition”, Lotta Moberg, Andrew P. Morriss

Andrew P. Morriss

Formed in 1961 to promote global economic and social well-being, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has become the collective voice of rich countries on international tax issues. After an initial focus on improving commerce through addressing double taxation issues, the organization shifted to a focus on restricting tax competition and increasing automatic exchanges of tax information. In this paper we analyze the reasons for this shift in policy focus. After describing the history of the OECD’s work on taxation, we examine the OECD’s project against “harmful tax competition” as it has played out since its launch in …
