This workshop is cosponsored by the Intermountain Oil and Gas BMP Project and the Colorado Water and Energy Research Center, with financial support from the Environmentally Friendly Drilling Project and the CU-Boulder Outreach Committee.

The Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC) recently initiated a rule making process to develop new, statewide regulations for baseline sampling and monitoring of groundwater near new oil and gas wells. COGCC’s first rule making hearing was held November 14; the rule is expected to be finalized December 10. This paper explores the consent process in relation to academic, scientific research. Consent is a human right given to each research participant. The participant’s autonomy should be supported and encouraged when obtaining informed consent. This paper reviews current literature and discusses the development of this right, in addition to the manner in which scientific researchers should uphold it.

The Social Innovation Network (SInet) was established for cross-disciplinary research on social innovation to 'create better futures for people'. SInet is itself socially innovative since a network is a relatively unfamiliar configuration for a university-wide research unit. A network provides an identity to a research collective that is real, having status and support,but which is fundamentally different to an institute. In a network, connections and flows of knowledge tend to be horizontal not vertical. A network is flexible, reconfigurable, responsive to change and less formal, and has the potential for lower administrative overheads. As knowledge workers, university researchers perform best …

This article examines theory and identifies gaps in research related to the role of driving skills in driving anxiety. Increasingly, investigators have examined the clinical features of driving anxiety and the more severe situation of driving fear and phobia, but the possible involvement of driving skills has been neglected. This is surprising given the potential implications for skills training and remediation in the assessment and treatment of some of those who experience driving anxiety, fear, and phobia. The largest body of relevant research comes from the driving and human factors literature on the relationship between anxiety and driving performance. The …

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the patients and practices of family physicians in a national practice-based research network to understand whether results from practice-based research networks are likely to be relevant to other practicing clinicians. STUDY DESIGN: Survey focused on family physicians that replicated the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS). SETTING: The Ambulatory Sentinel Practice Network Inc (ASPN), a practice-based research network, consisting of volunteer primary care practices that serve approximately 350,000 patients. Qualitative methods can play a significant role in both formative and summative evaluations. There are at least six functions of qualitative methods in evaluation. Tables and figures present information on characteristics of qualitative and quantitative methods, selected qualitative evaluation models, and a checklist of evaluation situations for which qualitative methods are appropriate.

The Ambulatory Sentinel Practice Network (ASPN) was created to increase the knowledge of primary care. Building on the experiences of other national and regional primary care research networks, ASPN has evolved as a North American network including practices in 25 U.S. states and four Canadian provinces in 1987. This paper summarizes ASPN's growth and development since 1978, the involvement of the ASPN practices, and the mechanisms used in developing and managing studies.

Investigators interested in conducting school health research face many important challenges. First, an appropriate research course for school health must be charted so the most important research issues are addressed in a systematic way. Second, there is a continuing need to develop scientifically sound research methods that can be used in the school setting. Third, there is the immediate need to identify ways of overcoming the usual problems encountered in the conduct of school health research. Several meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials (RCT) have shown exercise to improve cognitive function in normal aging, mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia (Colcombe & Kramer, 2003, O’ Leary et al., 2011). Cognitive benefit from mental exercise alone is less definitive. A recent RCT (Anderson-Hanley et al., 2012) found greater benefit from three months of virtual-reality enhanced exercise than physical exercise alone among 79 independent living older adults.
